One of the greatest pieces of ancient philosophical writing is
without question the Apology written by Plato sometime during
4th century B.C.E in Greece. It tells of the trial of Socrates,
Plato's teacher, who was accused of corrupting the youth and
spreading false beliefs of the gods and higher thoughts. It is a
powerful tale of one man standing up for what he believes in and
facing foe and friend alike in a moral dispute of what is life

To the philosopher Aristotle, there were many types of virtues
and they came in many forms. He viewed virtue as the habit of
the soul. It was the mean between two vices: one of deficiency
and one of excess. And this mean was defined through reason as
the prudent man would define it. He was careful in his analysis
of mankind and all the basic components that should make the
species as is. To Aristotle, virtue was the sign that meant the
man and his soul was at happiness, which was the ultimate goal
of life. Though he carefully examined many virtues, one of the
more interesting and analytical in his studies is his perception
on the virtue of courage.

The movie "High Noon" has interesting comparisons to the
philosophies and views of Kant. While many will say it can
mirror the philosopher's views, particularly through the actions
of the lead character Kane, this paper will analyze the
interesting and somewhat contrary view by looking at the actions
of Kane's wife.
It is important to note first that Kane's wife is an emotional
person. She is a religious woman, a Quaker to be precise, and
chose this lifestyle after she saw her father and brother killed
by guns. Her current viewpoints on guns, violence and personal
involvement reflect her emotional side which Kant would clearly

A tragic hero can come in many forms. Whether it be a young
female from an ancient Greek play, or an old wise man from
modern views, a tragic hero fits many molds of characters. But
on the contrary a character can fit many molds of a tragic hero
and not fully achieve such a level. Taking a look at two
characters, in this example Othello from Shakespeare's Othello
and Doctor Stockmann from Ibsen's Enemy of the People, one can
see how the different combinations of traits, beliefs and
actions lead to a character fulfilling the requirements to be a
tragic hero or falling short of such a goal.

One of the greatest philosophers to develop and refine
epistemology, along with other philosophical concepts, is
Immanuel Kant. With careful examination, thought and concern, he
developed a unique philosophy, that of transcendental
philosophy, to extend both the worlds of rationalism and
empiricism. By looking carefully at the former philosophers of
notable importance, namely Descartes and Hume, Kant was able to
a very modern philosophy that lays basis to much thought and
looks upon thought today. Examination of the two mentioned
philosophers will only show their importance in contribution to
Kant's foundation and therefore the foundation that bonded
empiricism and rationalism.
