Article Title :: Impact of One in the Apology

One of the greatest pieces of ancient philosophical writing is without question the Apology written by Plato sometime during 4th century B.C.E in Greece. It tells of the trial of Socrates, Plato's teacher, who was accused of corrupting the youth and spreading false beliefs of the gods and higher thoughts. It is a powerful tale of one man standing up for what he believes in and facing foe and friend alike in a moral dispute of what is life truly worth. With such views and beliefs so firmly upheld and fought for and against, it is clearly a powerful philosophical piece that challenges the limits of man's desires and wants with the needs of man's search for self value and upheld views.  Article Title :: On the Matter of Courage

To the philosopher Aristotle, there were many types of virtues and they came in many forms. He viewed virtue as the habit of the soul. It was the mean between two vices: one of deficiency and one of excess. And this mean was defined through reason as the prudent man would define it. He was careful in his analysis of mankind and all the basic components that should make the species as is. To Aristotle, virtue was the sign that meant the man and his soul was at happiness, which was the ultimate goal of life. Though he carefully examined many virtues, one of the more interesting and analytical in his studies is his perception on the virtue of courage. Aristotle's view of bravery and courage  (read full article)

Article Title :: Philosophy of High Noon

The movie "High Noon" has interesting comparisons to the philosophies and views of Kant. While many will say it can mirror the philosopher's views, particularly through the actions of the lead character Kane, this paper will analyze the interesting and somewhat contrary view by looking at the actions of Kane's wife. It is important to note first that Kane's wife is an emotional person. She is a religious woman, a Quaker to be precise, and chose this lifestyle after she saw her father and brother killed by guns. Her current viewpoints on guns, violence and personal involvement reflect her emotional side which Kant would clearly say as a weak point and completely differs from Kantian view.  (read full article)

Article Title :: The Tragic Hero

A tragic hero can come in many forms. Whether it be a young female from an ancient Greek play, or an old wise man from modern views, a tragic hero fits many molds of characters. But on the contrary a character can fit many molds of a tragic hero and not fully achieve such a level. Taking a look at two characters, in this example Othello from Shakespeare's Othello and Doctor Stockmann from Ibsen's Enemy of the People, one can see how the different combinations of traits, beliefs and actions lead to a character fulfilling the requirements to be a tragic hero or falling short of such a goal. What exactly is the tragic hero? For this paper the definition given by the ancient philosopher Aris  (read full article)

Article Title :: Exploring Kant through Descartes and Hume

One of the greatest philosophers to develop and refine epistemology, along with other philosophical concepts, is Immanuel Kant. With careful examination, thought and concern, he developed a unique philosophy, that of transcendental philosophy, to extend both the worlds of rationalism and empiricism. By looking carefully at the former philosophers of notable importance, namely Descartes and Hume, Kant was able to a very modern philosophy that lays basis to much thought and looks upon thought today. Examination of the two mentioned philosophers will only show their importance in contribution to Kant's foundation and therefore the foundation that bonded empiricism and rationalism. Let us loo  (read full article)

Article Title :: Analysis of Othello

One of the main concerns with plays is figuring out who a character truly is. While it can be clear of their names, looks, and even actions, knowing what drives this character to be who they are is an more in depth look. Some characters are more easy to analyze, but there are those that are complex at first glance but once one realizes the key powers that drive that character, one can understand the play even more. Such a character is Othello from Shakespeare's Othello, a play about a man in conflict with his self identity and social interpretation of who he is. This essay will look further into the character of Othello and bring out the crucial obstacles and objectives that form him into   (read full article)

Article Title :: How to Paint Abstract Art

Copyright 2006 Lynne Taetzsch Do you want to create abstract art, but feel that you don't know where to begin? Here are some ideas to get you started: Begin traditionally by copying from life and gradually move into abstraction. When I was young, I drew and painted portraits, still lifes, and landscapes. Sometimes I copied from a photograph or a reproduction of someone else's art. The goal at that time was to represent what I saw as closely as possible. It wasn't until my late teens that I began to "abstract" or move away from reality. I still began with a subject, but I did not feel bound to represent it, only to use it as a starting-off point for my own purposes. All art is abstract in  (read full article)

Article Title :: Advanced Blackjack Strategy

Blackjack card counting is an advanced technique to win on blackjack. A player must first learn the basic strategies of blackjack before learning "counting". By learning the technique of counting you will have the odds with you. The basic concept of blackjack counting is that a deck filled with 10s and aces will be to your advantage. While the deck of the dealer is filled with smaller cards but is to the dealer's advantage. Simply put, when the deck is in your favor bet to the maximum, when it's with the dealer's bet minimum. This is because a deck filled with 10 increases the chance of the dealer getting bust. You on the other hand can just opt to stand. In an opposite manner, a deck fi  (read full article)

Article Title :: Reality TV Stars Bite Back. Sued for $1.0 Million by Producers

"The Big Loser" is already the name of a reality TV series, but many other reality shows really do end up with big losers when actors seeking their fifteen minutes of fame in Hollywood are cancelled or disqualified from reality shows by the producers. Often the losers on these shows come back to the set to stalk and threaten the cast and crew, or sit at home firing off libelous and slanderous internet blogs in an attempt to destroy the reputation of the shows, producers and cast. Dallas Tanner, producer, creator, and director of "Destination X" an adventure reality show announced that their production company had to get restraining orders and file civil and criminal complaints against sev  (read full article)
