Article Title :: November NFL Thoughts

Picked up pieces from the sports betting weekend. A pro handicapper told me about an old betting angle started back in the 1970s which relates to the mid-point of the NFL season. According to him, people bet on any team that starts the season 2-6 or worse for the rest of the year, and against any team that starts 6-2 or better. This is not a formula for hitting 80% winners the rest of the way, but for sports betting grinders. I don't do that, but I can see reasoning behind the angle. You're going against public perception which means, in theory, you’re getting a few extra points each week, as teams that that 2-6 are likely to be big dogs the rest of the way, while currently strong teams (read full article)

Article Title :: Foote Notes: Boise State at Fresno State

The WAC takes center stage when Boise State and Fresno State collide for this week’s installment of Thursday Night Football on ESPN. FSU is priced as a 9.5-point home favorite and the posted total is a lofty 63.The Broncos buck their way into this tilt at 7-2 (SU) and 4-3-1 (ATS), including 2-2 (SU) and (1-2-1) ATS on the road. Boise State kicked off the season with back-to-back losses at Georgia and at Oregon State, but has since reeled off seven consecutive wins overall.BSU pasted lowly New Mexico State 56-6 as a 35-point “blue carpet” favorite last Saturday and now stands at 5-0 (SU) in conference play. The win extended the Broncos home winning streak to 30 consecut (read full article)

I've always believed that the number zero is extremely defining! In the world of sports, as in real estate, it's all about "location, location and location!" A zero in the right-hand column of the won-loss standings is a very good thing, while one in the left-hand column, is not so good!As college football enters its stretch run, anyone remotely associated with the game is well aware that USC, Texas and Alabama (listed in order of the team's BCS rankings), remain the nation's lone unbeaten teams. However, there a few other teams with a zero in that right-hand column, when it comes to conference standings.West Virginia of the Big East, easily took care of Cincinnati on Wednes (read full article)

Article Title :: Heisman Update November 10

Going into week 10, Virginia Tech’s Marcus Vick was a shoe-in to make the trip to New York, but after last Saturday’s performance against the Hurricanes, he is on the outside of the Heisman race looking in. The three Heisman front-runners, Young, Leinart, and Bush, did nothing to hurt their chances, and by that I mean had great games, but because we have come to expect such improbable performances week in and week out, they didn’t live up to the expectations we have created for them. I mean, it’s going to be hard for Young to compete with his 500 yd day he had two weeks ago. In comparison, his 16-27 passing for 298yds and 2 TDs leading Texas to a 62-0 romp over Baylor is seen as a (read full article)

Article Title :: College Football: A Defense of the System

Perhaps all the critics of the Bowl Championship Series can take a deep breath and a few months off in their criticism of the system. Texas and USC will very likely wind up undefeated, earning the right to meet for the ugly crystal trophy emblematic of the national championship. That's going to bother a lot of people who believe no system is complete without a playoff, people who, too often, miss the point of what makes college football unique from any other competitive sport.The college game doesn't need a playoff, it already has one built into the regular season. Miami and Virginia Tech a few weeks ago? Playoff game. Miami and Florida State way back on Labor Day? Playoff ga (read full article)

Article Title :: Golden Gopher Goofs--Two that Got Away

I wasn't around during the 1930s and too young to appreciate football in the '40s, but at one time, the University of Minnesota was a football factory producing some of the nation's best college football teams. The school had long been noted for its football program before the thirties. The joke about Bronko Nagurski was that Doc Williamson, the coach, had travelled about the state looking for football players for his team. When he found a likely candidate working in the field with plow in hand, he'd ask directions for a nearby town. If the candidate just pointed, he'd thank him and drive on. But if he used the plow to point, Williamson would sign him up on the spot. Nagurski pointed with (read full article)

Article Title :: Heisman Trophy Top-10 - November 14

| Texas may be No. 2 two in all the polls as well as being No.2 in the BCS standings but it seems as if its QB, Vince Young, is 'stealing' the hearts of many Heisman experts. I think there is little argument the Reggie Bush's candidacy has lost a lot of momentum since the Notre Dame game plus I get the feeling that too many people are taking for granted the incredible accomplishments of Matt Leinart. Add it all up and Young looks like the favorite. Behind the "Big Three", Brady Quinn of Notre Dame and Drew Olson of UCLA are having Heisman-worthy seasons but unfortunately for both of them, its a case of wrong time, wrong place (season). My latest Heisman update follows.

Chargers To Electrocute Bills … San Diego is coming off a bye week and is 10-1 ATS vs. teams with a losing record going back to last season. Their next victim ought to be Buffalo (+9.5) this week at home. Bills coming off 14-3 home win over KC after JP Losman filled in for the injured Kelly Holcomb. But the victory was hardly a thing of beauty as BUF put up just 209 yards total offense and Bills vulnerable 31st ranked rushing defense gave up 150 yards to Larry Johnson and Co. Word has it LaDainian Tomlinson will wear a bib all week in practice to soak in the pounds of drool coming from his mouth as he dreams about facing the Bills beleaguered rush defense.Breaking Wind At Soldier (read full article)

Article Title :: Interview: Duval Love

Duval Love is a former Offensive Lineman who graduated from UCLA and played 11 years in the NFL for the Los Angeles Rams, Pittsburgh Steelers and Arizona Cardinals and made the Pro Bowl. I was honored when he agreed to meet with me to answer some questions for the website.Who did you idolize in the NFL while growing up?Well, I was a huge Dallas Cowboys fan and a Minnesota Vikings fan. It’s kind of funny that I wasn’t really a Rams fan. I liked the Cowboys because the offensive line would do that little pause and go up, so I was immediately attracted to that. I was a huge fan of Harvey Martin, Too Tall Jones, Randy White, and Pat Donovan and those types of guys. I (read full article)

Breaking down Ohio State vs. MichiganKnown simply in Columbus, Ann Arbor, and every place in-between as "The Game", Ohio State and Michigan meet in the regular season finale for both teams again. And, as is usually the case, the stakes are very high.The Buckeyes can claim no worse than a share of the Big 10 crown, and will be assured of a spot in one of the big BCS game with a win. The Wolverines, who were thought to have been reduced to a pure spoiler role, have risen back up into the conference race. The turning point of the Wolverines season has to be when Chad Henne threw a touchdown pass on the last play of the game against Penn State to knock them from the ranks of the (read full article)
