Article Title :: Role Playing Games - Builder's Guide 6

The Challenge: A role playing game is an interactive story. As such, it must have a setting. The setting is the world or realm that the story occurs in, and its nature can vary as widely as there are character types to play. However, any successful setting requires some general laws that determine how the world functions. These laws form the basis for the sixth challenge of creating a customizable and balanced role playing game: the challenge of promoting realism.Realism in this context does not by any means indicate how closely the game world mirrors the laws of the real world. In a fantasy game, for example, there is nothing unrealistic about wizards throwing lightnin (read full article)

The Challenge: A role playing game offers a number of entertaining options. Some players will find that the randomness of die rolls is the most exciting part of the game. Others will favor the ability to creatively develop their characters. Some will take great interest in the collective story. Certain players will find the possible mysteries to be the best part of an RPG.And then there are the strategists, the players who look to the stats and abilities, who memorize the game rules and come up with innovative ways to succeed at the various challenges the game master presents. Tactics, like realism, can be critically important to certain players, and utterly annoying to (read full article)

The Challenge: Above all other things, a role playing game is just that—a game. And games, beyond everything else, are supposed to be fun. Where RPGs are concerned, there are a number of things that increase the entertaining value of the game. Random chance, cunning strategy, detailed character development, and so on.But even to a group who likes die rolling, having to roll three different types of checks for every action and compare the results will get very boring very fast. Even to a strategic group, five minutes of prep work for every combat turn is excessive. Even for descriptive players, not every little action warrants a paragraph worth of detail. And to playe (read full article)

Article Title :: Role Playing Games - Builder's Guide 9

The Challenge: In any game, there must be the element of difficulty. No one likes to lose, but if there isn’t that chance, there is no point to winning. And, the greater the risk of loss, the more poignant a hard-earned victory becomes. Role playing games are no different. Although many of these games are not strictly competitive between players, the characters almost always expose themselves to dangers and trials. If they can plow with ease through any encounter, there becomes no point to strategy and die rolls, and even description becomes stale. Thus, a designer must take into consideration the ninth challenge of building a versatile role playing game: the challenge of m (read full article)

| Starwars Galaxies (SWG) is an ambitious Massive Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game (MMORPG) from Sony Entertainment. It is a game surrounded by history and controversial views. The actual product itself has been around now for a number of years but has been significantly re-invented by Sony twice since going live. These large changes that Sony made have often been open to fiery debate by both old and new players. For the purpose of this review I will treat the game as new and try only to refer to the game in it's current form. The Starwars Galaxies starter kit has everything a new player needs to get up and running. | Article Title :: Guitar Hero Review (PS2) |

Guitar Hero is a fun music based game for the PS2. The developer of Guitar Hero, Harmonix, had previously created Amplitude and before that Frequency. All three of these games are music based games where you have to strum or button your way through a song. Frequency was the first, and in my opinion (and that of my friends) better than the sequel Amplitude. While Amplitude had a much better shared multiplayer view, the songs weren't as good and the sense of actually playing the music was much decreased in Amplitude. So when the guys come over to play games at my place, we usually plop in Frequency and not Amplitude.Guitar Hero carries on the tradition, and I think is an improvement (read full article)

Article Title :: The PSP Report Card - One Year Later

Well folks, the psp has now been out for about one year and its time to take a look at how it has done and whether or not it lived up to its expectations. All in all, I would say that the graphics on mostly any psp game definitely looked awesome. Its hard to believe how far technology has actually come over the years. It doesn't seem that long ago when I can remember playing Tetris on my gameboy and i thought that was the best thing since sliced bread. Boy have we come along way, huh.One disappointment I had with the average psp game is that most of them were just a copycat of games already out there for the ps2. Not that this is such a bad thing, because there are many excellent p (read full article)
