A Pen Drive is a removable storage device that plugs into a computer's USB port. Different manufacturers over the years have named their Pen Drives with many different names causing constant confusion. As a result of this the Pen Drive can also be known as Pocket Drive, Thumb Drive, Jump Drive, USB Flash Drive, USB Flash Memory Drive, USB Key Drive, USB Memory Key and USB Memory Stick among many others! Although none of these names are either correct or incorrect, one of the names cause a huge amount of confusion for people, t  (read full article)

 Article Title :: Which Laptop battery is right for you?

The short answer is: “Whichever type fits your laptop.” Laptop batteries vary according to the model and type of laptop computer for which they’ve been designed. All laptop batteries do, however, share some common characteristics that differentiate them from regular household batteries: • Laptop batteries are rechargeable • They are composed of multiple internal cells • Within each laptop battery is a small printed circuit board • Shape and location of terminals differ from model to model. As is the case with all batteries, laptop batteries create an electrochemical reaction, forcing a stream of electrons from one positio  (read full article)

 Article Title :: The Printer Cartridge Game

Think you got a great deal on a printer? Like the rest of us, you probably paid $50 to $75 for a decent Epson or Lexmark printer. What’s the catch, you might have asked? Most salesmen would say there is no catch. They’d probably go into a rant about how the printer market has gotten more competitive, driving prices way down. While that’s a true statement, it isn’t the primary reason for such inexpensive printers these days.So, why are printers so inexpensive? It’s pretty simple – printer manufacturers need you to buy their printer model so you’re forced into buying their outrageously-priced ink cartridges. It’s kind of like the relationship between a gasolin  (read full article)

 Article Title :: Review: Implementing the Google Search Appliance in an Intranet environment

Our corporate intranet is a non-framed environment with both Lotus Domino and IIS (.Net and classic ASP) applications and content. We have between 300,000-500,000 pages of web content and documents across more than 1200 “sites” on approximately 30 unique domains. We used to have Inktomi’s UltraSeek Server 3.0 as our intranet search engine which was beginning to look like its age (purchased in 1998). The Inktomi product did not handle attachments well (DOC, PPT, PDF, etc.), would not crawl our secured sites, and was no longer supported by the vendor. We did a cursory review of the search vendors and were immediately attracted to Google’s 30 day trial offer for their Google Sear  (read full article)

 Article Title :: Motherboard Basics

A recent Tech Tip covered the basics of selecting a computer case and made mention of the various sizes that correspond to motherboards of different form factors. A few people wrote in expressing interest in understanding more about the basics of motherboards, and that’s exactly what this Tech Tip intends to address.A motherboard, also known as a main board, is the primary circuit board inside of a computer, and is where the central processing unit (CPU), memory, expansion slots, drives, and other peripheral devices are connected.  Article Title :: Expansion Cards Part 1: (of a 3 part series)

PCIThe expansion slots available on motherboards allow for a variety of upgrades in a computer system, but matching the appropriate card to an available slot needs to be addressed before making any purchasing decisions. The most common types of expansion cards for modern computer systems can be broken down into three formats: PCI, AGP, and PCI Express. Each of these formats will be addressed separately in this three part series of Tech Tips, starting with PCI.The letters “PCI” stand for Peripheral Component Interconnect, and is the term used to describe a bus that connects components directly to the system’s memory and to the system’s processor through the “frontsi  (read full article)

 Article Title :: Expansion Cards Part 2: AGP

Expansion Cards Part 2: AGPThe first in this series of Tech Tips on expansion cards took a look at the PCI slot, and the variety of devices that may find their home in one. Graphics cards are one of the many items that may be used in a PCI slot, but the demands of fast-paced video games require more speed and greater bandwidth than the PCI Bus can provide. Thus, the AGP slot was born, providing a dedicated interface to transfer graphics data only.The letters ‘AGP’ stand for Accelerated Graphics Port, and it is the term used to describe a dedicated, point-to-point interface that connects a video card directly to the system’s memory and processor.AGP was first int  (read full article)

 Article Title :: Your Printer Is Out Of Ink -- Now What?

We’ve all been there. You’re in the middle of printing out an important document and your printer suddenly stops. It’s the dreaded “out of ink” message. So you pull your backup ink cartridges out of your desk drawer and replace them. Wishful thinking, right?Most of us just don’t plan ahead -- no matter how many times this has happened to us. When we buy ink cartridges, we tend to just get one set of black and color cartridges. The cost of ink is so high that buying more than one set is just too expensive for most consumers. Thankfully, there are less expensive options out there – and you don’t have to sacrifice quality.Option 1 – Avoid Staples, Best   (read full article)
