Article Title :: Designing a Good Lighting Plan

You are doing a remodel and know that you want to add some lighting to the room, but your stumped. Where do I start is the most common question I get asked. There are some basic guidelines and factors that can help you determine where to start and how to proceed. First let's take the room and it's needs. Different rooms require different lighting solutions. Rooms like bedrooms, living rooms, dens and basements can be properly illuminated with a simple general lighting plan. In rooms up to about 12' x 12', one ceiling light that can hold bulbs that combined equal about 120 watts is sufficient. For a better and more evenly disbursed light, 4 recessed lights about 40" off each corner works wo  (read full article)

Article Title :: Have you inspected your Garage Door lately?

The garage door is typically the largest moving part in your home and is probably used every day. With normal use, parts can wear out and break, creating potential safety problems. There are a few light maintenance duties and inspections a mechanically inclined person can perform to ensure maximum safety and increase the life of their door. Check the rollers, hinges and safety devices to be sure they are fastened securely and in proper working order. Check the balance of the door by lifting it a few feet off the ground and releasing. The door should not travel more than a couple of inches in either direction. If the door drops to the ground then your springs either need adjusting or re  (read full article)

Article Title :: VINYL REPLACEMENT WINDOW TERMINOLOGY

With so many homeowners in the market for more energy efficient windows and doors for their home, i thought i would use this week's article to cover the more common terms used to describe a window's ability to insulate your home from the elements. There is an organization called The National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC). Their purpose is to test each window manufacturer's product to independently verify the ratings for each test administered. So, let's discuss each test and what it means. First, there is the U-Factor. This number represents the rate that heat escapes through the window. Therefore, the lower the U-Factor, the better the window. Most vinyl replacement windows with   (read full article)

Article Title :: Get More Heat from Your Same Ol' Fireplace with Simple Technique

For some people, a fireplace might as well be a video of flaming logs. Their primary interest is the welcoming ambiance a fireplace’s blaze presents. If, however, you expect your fireplace to provide heat in exchange for your log-carrying, fire-building efforts, (or in the case of gas logs, in exchange for your gas bill), it’s time to maximize your fireplace’s heat output. There are various contraptions designed to return more of a wood or gas fireplace’s heat into the room and stanch the flow of that precious heat from escaping up the chimney. Many of them involve fans and vents and considerable expense. But one of the most time-honored, hassle-free, and least expensive methods of  (read full article)

Article Title :: At Last - Barefoot Comfort All Year Long

Ever wonder what it would feel like to walk barefoot in your house all year long and be comfortable? Electric radiant floor warming systems answer that question. Electric radiant floor warming uses a thin mesh mat with a heating element woven throughout to heat open floor areas. Rooms such as baths and kitchens are popular places people like to have extra warmth, but don’t forget the foyer, mudroom, laundry room – or just about any room in the house! Using radiant heat, the heat stored in the floor is similar to the heat provided by a radiator. The heated floor radiates heat to the people and objects in the room. The flooring surface is maintained at a comfortable, yet higher temperatur  (read full article)

Article Title :: Single hung aluminum window glass repair

Let's talk about repairing broken glass in an aluminum frame single hung window. If it's the lower sash pane that is broken, it must be removed from the inside. You are going to have one of three different mechanisms that hold the lower sash up when you slide it open. If you can't see any mechanisms on the sides, then you have a block and tackle system consisting of a string and spring assembly. Find the thin metal clips in the side jambs just above the sash. Pull the bottom of the clip out using a screwdriver or your fingernail. Do that on both sides. Then remove any rubber stops at the very top of the window. Raise the window as high as it will go. The block and tackle assemblies will ge  (read full article)

Article Title :: Stair Rail Decorating Ideas

Little things make the difference. Dress up a plain wooden stair rail by using an ornamental curtain finial. Simply screw into place. You'll find finials to be reasonably priced, so you may want to use more than one. I like to put one at the entrance or bottom of the stairs and one at the top of the stair landing. There are loads of finials to choose from, the selection is endless. When trying to decide which finial is right for you and your stair rail, remember to think about your personality, how you want to reflect it and what would make you smile every time you climb those stairs. If you consider yourself the traditionalists, go with a pineapple or acorn finial, in a brass or pewter f  (read full article)
