Article Title :: Fielding's Education of Readers in "Tom Jones," Part Seven

Constructing a Moral Universe, continuedFielding then shows readers, in the introduction to Book XIV, what takes place when humans completely subjugate passion to reason. He describes the upper class as being "entirely made up of form and affectation" so that they can be said to "have no character at all" or at least no individual characteristics that can be discerned (Fielding 649).The lives of the upper class are the "dullest," containing "very little humour or entertainment," and "all is vanity and servile imitation" (Fielding 649). The character of Lady Bellaston is, then, an exception to the kinds of people in high society. Fielding exhorts readers against taking (read full article)

Article Title :: Fielding's Education of Readers in "Tom Jones," Part Eight

Connecting the WholeRichetti states that eighteenth-century novels in England are "heavily didactic," and the writers of the period are "open in their championing of moral truths" (Richetti 35). This assertion is undoubtedly accurate for Tom Jones; however, Fielding is well aware that "novel-reading is gratuitous and that commitment to a text is provisional" (Sherman 232). Therefore Fielding, in order to procure and satisfy readers' desires, engages readers in a "literal contract" (Sherman 234).Narrative...depends on social agreements, implicit pacts or contracts in order to produce exchanges that themselves are a function of desires, purposes, cons (read full article)

Article Title :: Moderate Muslims Must Denounce Murdering Mobs and International Terrorism

It is time for moderate Muslims to stop hating Jews and stop appeasing and allowing mobs to protect in ignorance the United States of America. It does not serve the Moderate Muslims for their out of hand and problematic fundamentalist mobs to continue to purport misdirection and hate. The educated and intelligent Moderate Muslims are afraid to make waves, yet it is time for them to stand up and say something, as if things get any worse they too will be in jeopardy of losing everything.I would ask; Why have the Muslims not denounced the International Terrorists? Why have the Muslims not stopped these acts on their own? They are much closer to the problem and perhaps could talk some (read full article)

Article Title :: Israel Has No Right To Protect Its People From Hamas?

The blogosphere is really heating up these days with political rhetoric as those who support Palestinians are claiming that Israel is evil and the Palestinians had every right to elect Hamas or the International Terrorist Party into power. Come again? What are they saying, it is okay to elect by a 60% margin a group of murderers and criminals into power? Now the political rhetoric is saying that Palestinians have a right to attack Israel? Do they really now? And they are also saying that the Jews stole their land and forced them to leave, yet not all the palestians in the Jerusalem area or the new Jewish State were forced to leave and that was in 1948? We are in 2006 and that is nea (read full article)

Article Title :: Responsibility, Rehabilitation and Recidivism Realities

Our prisons are more populated per capita than any other country in the world. The recidivism rates are ridiculous, repeat offenders are not rehabilitated and what about the responsibility of raising the rascals? Many agree that rehabilitation is best but there, but I also agree on responsibility of parents and of self. Many are not so much into the forgiving thing when it comes to criminals, whether they are in jail, walking the streets or straddling the law working for both sides; IE law enforcement, lawyer, government worker. There needs to be responsibility for those who have offspring to raise them right and take care of them. We make people get driver’s licenses to dri (read full article)

Article Title :: Should Prisons Have Color Televisions?

There are several theories on whether or not criminals should have color televisions. Some say it keeps the natives from rebelling and thus means less stress on prison guards and less labor, with fewer riots. Others such as victims of crimes are completely outraged and many taxpayers are also angry. Recently this subject was brought up in an online think tank and a think tanker stated;“As far as color TV, it has been shown that cooping up men all day with nothing to do breeds violence. This is problematic from a control standpoint, that is why there is "program" in prison - something semi-productive for the inmates to do so they are not selling drugs, engaging in general racketee (read full article)

Article Title :: Manipulative Words of Equal Meaning

Many words mean the same thing and may be used synonymously in context to make ideas and concepts clear in the process of standard writing. Some synonyms, however, may be used euphemistically to manipulate a reaction of the reader or listener to the context of a statement. Take the word “lie” for instance. The dictionary definition of the word lie is, “a false statement made with deliberate intent to deceive.” In the year 2003, the definitional use of the word “lie” became ambiguous when applied to the statements made by President George W. Bush and Vice-President Richard Cheney regarding the imminent danger posed by Iraqi weapons of mass destruction to the United States. (read full article)

Article Title :: A Brief History of Body Piercing

Body piercing is truly ancient with the earliest recorded piercing appearing on a frozen mummy found in an Austrian glacier in 1991. The body had several expanded ear piercings measuring between 7mm and 11mm.Other early mentions of body piercing come from the bible itself especially Genesis 24:22 where nose jewellery (often misquoted as earrings) were given as a gift to Rebekah, wife of Isaac.Roman soldiers are also said by many to have had their nipples pierced as some sort of right of passage but there is little or no evidence of this. In fact many articles will state that the piercing was used to somehow ‘hold their cloaks in place’. Anyone who has had a nipple pierci (read full article)

Article Title :: We Must Send More Aid to Africa!

Many are complaining that we must send more aid to Africa. Send money, teach them to farm, help clean up environment and give them inexpensive medicines. Well perhaps we are looking at this incorrectly. Perhaps we need to limit the human population there? For instance why not tell the Human Africans to stop breeding like rats? Stop killing off their primate cousins, etc.Of course as long as the humans keep having wars with Machetes and Machine Guns there, perhaps the problem will take care of itself? Seems kind of silly to solve all the problems there, when the people are busy killing each other, running out of water, spreading AIDS, etc.Recently I was in a coffee shop discu (read full article)
