 Article Title :: School Bullying Stopped with the Cops

School Bullying Stopped with the Cops by: Paula McCoach Some of our hardcore bullies have Probation Officers. Our school administrators and counselors use these P.O.s to help us help the bullies. We get in touch with the Department of Juvenile Justice and communicate with them about the bully's behavior. With several of the bullies, we would send the P.O. the daily checklist, so he/she would know how the bully was behaving every day. Also, we send any disciplinary referrals to D.J.J. In some states, a school disciplinary referral will cause the bully to be sent to a detention center for a short period of time. The most important idea is that the bully knows you are going to ha  (read full article)

 Article Title :: The Concept of Perfection

The Concept of Perfection by: Ken Kaiserman The Dodgers had a breakfast a couple of weeks ago to tell their story about off-season moves and the team they’ll put on the field for 2005. I was there to listen to the new owner, Frank McCourt, the general manager, Paul DePodesta, Hall of Famer, Tommy Lasorda, and the Dodgers’ manager, Jim Tracy. They told a good story about the Dodgers and what their plans are, but the most interesting aspect to me was something that was said and its application to teaching kids about sports and ultimately, life. After the presentation was finished, people from the crowd were allowed to ask questions. One guy asked about Milton Bradley and the Dodger  (read full article)

 Article Title :: Kids & Cell Phones

Kids & Cell Phones by: Robert Lett Is it safety? Is it security? Or is it just cool? Have you ever noticed how many kiosks have popped up in you favorite mall? And just about all of them are selling cell phones. Teens can actually design their own graphics and have the graphic airbrushed on the face of the phone itself. They face plates and antennas that light up on each ring. Just drop by a kiosk next time your at the mall, you'll see what I mean. In a resent Los Angeles Times article, they stated that teens with cell phones were at around 16% on average. I think by 2005, it will more of an average of 50% or even more. Cell phones seem to be a great security feature for the pare  (read full article)

SMS Daycare by: Robert Lett Using the Physical World as a Game Board. This is not Kinky Day Care! SMS stands for Short Message Service. If your children carry cell phones, or if you have an extra family phone you can let them borrow for the day. This is a good way to get a break and run the kids all over the neighborhood. The Treasure Hunt. Come up with a few locations around the house or the yard and create hints to explain each location. It's better to have three or four hints for each location. I usually put a card with a number on it at each location. This will help you know if they actually made it to the location. You don't have to use the cards or "PostIt Note" if you don'  (read full article)

 Article Title :: SMS Gaming

SMS Gaming by: Robert Lett Using the Physical World as Your Game Board. This is not a Kinky game! SMS stands for Short Message Service. Just like our last article, this can be fun for teens and adults. You just have to do it on a different scale. Pick a location approximately 4 square city blocks of a favorite area where your teen group or friends like to be. Spend an afternoon picking locations from that area and creating hints that can be text paged easily. Pick at least ten locations if not more and three to five hints for each location. Put the hints in order of hardest to figure out to the simplest, which will almost tell them where it is. You can mix the Location Hunt gam  (read full article)

School Bullying Stopped: 5 Ways to Have a Pupil Services Meeting that Works! by: Paula McCoach You have had so many meetings on these bullies, but none of them ever seem to be effective. You waste time and energy, and the bullies keep bullying. Follow these 5 steps and have a meeting that produces results. 1. Be sure you have the decision makers at the meeting. The Kids are Alright: Technology is a Larger Part of Our Kids Lives Now More Than Ever. But Is Technology Making Our Kids Smarter? Part 1 of 2 by: Michael Dillon As we enter the new millennium, we face many uncertainties. The cultural and political landscape of the world is changing rapidly, often making it difficult for us to keep up. There are very few constants that we can point to and say, “This will always be here.” Could you have imagined, twenty years ago, that there would no Soviet Union? Or that it would be easier to get a handgun or rifle than a fishing license? However, one of the few constants of the new millennium that has remained the same is technology, and its  (read full article)

The Kids are Alright: Technology is a Larger Part of Our Kids Lives Now More Than Ever. But Is Technology Making Our Kids Smarter? Part 2 of 2 by: Michael Dillon Part Two: The Case for Technology. It is making our Kids Smarter. According to Don Tapscott, the author of Growing Up Digital: The Rise of the Net Generation (McGraw-Hill), the idea that technology and the Internet are hurting our children is just plain wrong. In fact, he reverently believes in the opposite. "The Internet and new technology is the most powerful tool for learning ever. Children who have access to this new communications medium will learn more effectively than those who don't," he says. "When kids are onl  (read full article)
