Article Title :: How to Use Mind-Maps in Language Learning
Mind-maps are the creation of Tony Buzan, the memory expert. The basic principle is that the mind dislikes traditional, linear note taking and thus anything we write should start in the centre of the page with related ideas branching out in all directions. This tool has been successfully used by managers to organise, brainstorm, and even to prepare notes for speeches. Do a search for mind-maps on the Internet and you will find plenty of good examples. I think that mind-maps can be an important and effective asset to anyone who wants to learn a language. Why traditional note taking is ineffectiveI observe my students in class writing down the new vocabulary that comes u  (read full article)

Article Title :: Pronunciation vs Katakana
As a native English speaker hearing non-natives (especially Asians) trying to speak the English language I sometimes can’t help but chuckle, or cry, over the way they slaughter the words. As I presently reside in Japan and understand the Japanese writing system I have come to understand, in one word, why they tear apart the English language... Katakana!Katakana is one of the four Japanese writing systems. The other systems being Kanji (the characters ((not cartoon)) you see on tattoos), Hiragana, and Romaji (the Roman alphabet). The early Japanese written language came from China. This system is called Kanji. Through the development of the Japanese language it became necessary to  (read full article)

Article Title :: Master Spanish or Any Other Language in 30 Days or Less!
As in many aspects in life, Second Language Acquisition is part of a process that may extend for several years. How funny and ludicrous it is to find language courses that offer what we would all like to hear, that we can master a new language in only 30 days! Some of these course providers even go one step beyond and raise the ante by promising students to speak a language with native- like pronunciation in this span of time.Simply put, this is a blunt lie. Even for people living abroad in a foreign country, it may take several years for them to master the new language, let alone sound like native speakers. All this in spite of being immersed in the best setting for language  (read full article)

Article Title :: Runes - The Origin and Purpose Behind the Ancient Symbols and Alphabet
Ask six rune experts 'Where did the runes originate from?' and you will probably get 6 different answers. There are different versions of runes for each culture and era they seemed to come from. One person told me they came from the vikings, another said they originated from the druids, yet another said they came from aliens, each person was serious and thought they had the correct origins of the runes, how can everyone have a different answer about them ? The answer appears to be 'time', over the years folks have made up so many tales about the runes that nobody knows the true origin of them. The very name 'rune', is a word derived from the Gothic word 'runa', which means "mystery."  (read full article)

Article Title :: Why Flash Cards are Better than Software for Language Learning
You may be tempted to invest in some language-learning software that you have seen advertised. Don’t be fooled by the advertiser’s claims. All that glitters is not gold – so it may have lots of fancy colours and use all the latest technology, but is it actually more effective than other, more simple methods? In my opinion, no. Here’s why the humble flash card out-performs software every time:1. They’re cheap Go to any stationer’s and buy some blank cards, the size of a business card. They cost next to nothing. A language learning CD-ROM will cost you at least 20 dollars, perhaps as much as two hundred!2. You can use them anywhere I started learnin  (read full article)

Article Title :: Learn English/Spanish to Expand Your Horizons
Spanish is quickly becoming the second language of the United States. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are over 40 million Americans of Hispanic origins, which include people with Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Central American, and South American origins. In addition, there are over 47 million Americans who speak a language other than English at home. Of these, slightly over 28 million speak Spanish. This represents a 62 percent increase since 1990. Although slightly over half of the people who speak Spanish at home also speak English very well, there are 12.6 million Spanish speakers who do not speak English well. This trend is expected to continue its upward rise, which means   (read full article)

Article Title :: Easy Language Learning
Is learning a foreign language ever easy? Yes. If you are five and move to another country ...But what about for the rest of us who are no longer five, and need to be polite when travelling for business or for pleasure? I think that the answer is yes, language learning can be easy provided you don’t want or need to learn too much. The key to successful language learning in my mind is not to set the goalposts too high. It is rather like running. Even if you run twice a week, you don’t necessarily want to be able to run a marathon, or have any intention of running a marathon or maybe you never could run a marathon. You might just want to maintain a level of fitness. I think  (read full article)
