| |
|
How many times have we been told the formula for maintaining a
healthy weight is to eat a balanced diet and exercise regularly?
Everybody knows the formula, although sophisticated marketers
package it in many creative ways. So if we all know what the
formula is, why is it so difficult to apply it to our lives? The
secret to losing weight is not in knowing the formula - it's in
applying what we already know.
Most organizations understand how to develop a strategy, but
many fail to successfully execute it. To illustrate this,
consider that in a typical year, 40 CEOs from the Fortune 200
are removed from their posts. Why? Of course, some had poor
strategies. However, the most common reason C (read full article) |

| Article Title :: How to Motivate Under-Performing Personnel |
| |
|
It is no secret that the performance of personnel is the largest
contributing factor to the long-term success of any
organization. Managers may give direction, but in the end, it is
the company's staff that determines how well it executes. It is
the staff that must respond to the threat of competition and the
shifting interests of shareholders and consumers. Taking this
into consideration, one of the greatest challenges facing
managers is motivating their personnel to achieve outstanding
performance. Whether you are a first-time or veteran manger,
these simple strategies will serve as a primer to put you on the
right track.

| Article Title :: Evidence-Based Decision Making |
| |
|
A rapidly spreading movement in the medical profession is
evidence-based decision making. The business community has also
begun to take notice. Pfeffer and Sutton's recent "Harvard
Business Review" article argues for evidence-based decision
making in business management.
Physicians using evidence-based decision making are committed to
identifying, disseminating, and applying the latest research
that is soundly conducted and clinically relevant. While this
makes common sense, it is not common practice.
Thousands of studies of medical practice are conducted each
year. You may find the research findings disturbing. Only 15% of
medical decisions are evidence based!

| Article Title :: Effective Performance Management |
| |
|
Recently the Aberdeen Group completed a study on performance
management. They found that companies with best-in-class
employee performance management systems produce 50 to 70 percent
more revenue than those that don't have a good system. That
finding gets my attention.
We also know, from earlier studies, that top performers are four
times as productive as the weakest performer in an organization.
Bob Rogers, the president of Development Dimensions
International (www.ddiworld.com), has said, "The majority of the
workforce is randomly trying to achieve success without any real
understanding of how success is measured for them in the
organization." The need for an effective employee perform (read full article) |

| Article Title :: Learn from the Olympics How to Organize your Events: Part 2 of 3
- Planning a Profitable Event |
| |
|
In the first part of this series, we looked at the logistics of
an event, both the logistics of fans getting to the event, and
the internal logistics allowing fans to move from one item of
interest to another. This time we will look at how to ensure
that our event is profitable.
The Olympics are a fun example of trying to put on the best show
that the world has ever seen and still turning a profit. Every
two years, usually about a month before the games, there will be
newspaper articles about how far over budget and behind schedule
the ticket sales the Olympic Games are. Fortunately, most of our
events are not judged by the same standards that the Olympics
are held to, but they do have eva (read full article) |

| Article Title :: CAN FIVE S HELP ME? (A common sense approach to improving
quality, productivity, safety and profits. |
| |
|
What is Five S?
Five S is a component of lean manufacturing that involves
organization and cleanliness, and then using standards to
maintain what has been accomplished. The term "Five S"
represents the five stages of a Five S program:
Sorting (Eliminate broken or unused equipment, tools and
supplies.)
Systematic Organization (Put everything in its proper place.)
Shine (Clean up on a regular schedule.)
Standardize (Make the above three steps easy to accomplish.)
Sustain (Take steps to maintain what has been accomplished.)
Five S involves common sense practices and is not very
complicated. But until the 5S System was created, many
businesses ignored these basic principles.
