Article Title :: The Way We Live Now or Appraisal, Valuation and Collecting in the 21st Century

Let’s be clear on one fundamental point. It is no accident that the last decade has engendered a proliferation of magazines, websites and other content providers within the collecting sphere. It is a consequence of shifting behavioural trends that reflect the mobility and fluidity of our age. An excellent example is the rise of what may best be described as portable collectables. These are items that one may easily carry around from place to place, perhaps country to country, and might typically include jewellery, homeware, silver, coins, manuscripts, ceramics, glass and so forth. It notably excludes furniture which, in its traditional form, tends to be bigger, bulkier and less conduciv  (read full article)

Article Title :: The Chainsaw - Useful Tool or Symbol of Terror?

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre movies, and others like them, are what I like to consider true horror movies, or even terror movies. They have the ability to really put a fear into someone. At least they're the type that puts a fear into me. Friday the 13th, Halloween, A Nightmare on Elm Street, these movies are of the fantastic, not what is real; therefore they have little scare power. They may be able to get you to jump, if my wife sneaks up on me she'll be able to momentarily frighten me, but she's not scary. Quick thrills, or quick scares are not horror movies to be. Horror is beyond such simple tricks, to truly be horrified you have to care, and who cares about a bunch of pot smoki  (read full article)

Article Title :: Life Lessons Learned While Watching M*A*S*H

M*A*S*H is one of my all time favorite TV shows. In fact, an old repeat is on while I write these words.I've had the good fortune over the years to meet both Alan Alda who played Hawkeye Pierce and Wayne Rogers who played Trapper John.Life lessons from M*A*S*H1. Humor healsCan you think of a more stressful and debilitating situation? Thousands of miles from home, in a war zone, putting wounded bodies back together again. One of the main coping techniques as laughter. Wise cracks, practical jokes, and more kept them going. Humor is a fantastic source of stress relief.2. An off the rack worldThere is a scene in which Hawke  (read full article)

Article Title :: Coming Next Year - High Definition Movies on DVD!

While HD Radio is the hottest technology today, HD DVDs are another new technology that will soon allow you to view high definition movies on DVD right in your living room. What are HD DVDs? It depends on whom you ask, as there are currently two competing HD DVD formats under development. Both support high def films but one goes by the easy to remember name, HD DVD. The other is called Blu-ray.An HD DVD disk has a single layer capacity of 15GB and a dual-layer capacity of 30 GB. And Toshiba is developing a triple layer disk that will have a capacity of 45GB. However, this is still smaller than Blu-ray disks, which support 25GB for one layer, 50GB for two layers and 100GB for   (read full article)

While you will soon be able to view movies in high definition on DVD right in your living room, there is a fight shaping up between two competitive formats -- HD DVD and Blu-ray.Toshiba leads the group committed to HD DVDs, which also includes consumer electronics manufacturers Sanyo and NEC.  Article Title :: How Television Shows Reflect the State of the National Psyche

In the '30s and '40s, during the heyday of radio and long before television, comedy was king. People were sick of the realities of the Great Depression and wanted to laugh. Jack Benny, Fred Allen, Burns and Allen, and Amos and Andy were some of the big stars. What Americans wanted in entertainment was obvious and it didin't take a great deal of psychoanalyzing to understand why. Then came the fifties and television became the popular media. Fans followed their favorite comedians to the screen and comedy stars, especially Milton Berle, Sid Caesar, Jack Benny were the household words. It was a return to the days of Vaudeville. But a new form of comedy appeared, the Sitcom. America was  (read full article)

Article Title :: The Night of the Hunter-One of the Scariest Movies Ever Made

As a kid I spent nearly every Saturday afternoon at the movies. You got to see a newsreel, cartoon, serial and a western for a quarter. Occasionally they would play a Lon Chaney werewolf movie, or a vampire film. They were all right, but I can't say that they really frightened me very much. I didn't get a real scare out of a movie until I was well into my teens. The movie was 1957 classic, The Night of the Hunter.(Please be advised that the following contains spoilers and anyone intending to watch the film for the first time should be so warned.)A young Peter Graves robs a bank. Before he is captured he gives the money to his children to hide. In prison, he tells Robert Mi  (read full article)

Article Title :: Television, the Toad, and Demi Moore

I learned on one of the news channels that there were problems ahead created by HD television for television performers with warts, moles, or other skin blemishes. Demi Moore was mentioned. I suppose that meant that if they show a Demi Moore movie with HD television she might show a blemish sending her zillion fans a running.Demi has spent some time here in Idaho (having investments here and a failed marriage). From what I hear first hand, she is absolutely stunning even under close scrutiny when she dances in that joint up in Sun Valley. Do you really think her fans will care? The shop owners in Ketchum can hardly wait for her to come into their stores to buy a button (which  (read full article)

Article Title :: It's Okay Martha Stewart!

Martha got her show cancelled and it’s my fault. I never watched one episode. I never gave it a chance! You see, I never watch Donald Trump’s version of The Apprentice either. To me, any resemblance to how executives are selected in real life is zilch. The Apprentice is just a game show. One of the losers wins. When the feds decided that Martha was not being nice (rather than just being totally confused) and that she should go to jail, I decided that was the low point of her life. I didn’t realize that she was going to make a fool of her self like The Donald. The Donald is use to being a fool. He knows what is going on, how to pla  (read full article)
