Article Title :: Effective Post Card Mailings - Direct Mail

We all know that off-line promotion is just as vital as on-line promotion. But what other means of "off-line" promotion can you do other than mailing out your Flyer or Newsletter? Alot. We could go into Media, Radio, Television and others but that is another topic in itself. Postcards are the "new" wave of off-line promotion, or direct mailings. The costs incurred are far much less than those of traditional direct mailings. Postcards, leave out the extra extra’s sorta speak, no envelopes, no envelope stuffing, and the postage is half the cost of first class postage on a standard letter, while still obtaining first class handling through the US Postal Service.I myself, have had ra (read full article)

Article Title :: Making A Name For Yourself - Genre Newsletters

If you are just starting out promoting your band, if you have no fan base, or if you just want to attract fans who like your style of music, then start publishing a Genre Ezine.Genre ezines are electronic newsletters catering to your style of music. Unlike band newsletters, they are not limited to your band's music. Instead, they promote every band that is similiar to your band and your style of music. By promoting a genre, rather than your band in this style of newsletter, you will attract people who might be extremely interested in a specific style of music, but aren't interested in you...yet. And best of all you, you are in control.I publish the Celtic MP3s Music Magazine (read full article)

Article Title :: How to Endorsing Your Favorite Band Will Earn You Fans

A couple of my groups favorite Celtic bands are Enya, Loreena McKennit and the Chieftains. I guess I kinda liken the Brobdingnagian Bards to these groups. Like Enya, we play some beautiful romantic mood music. Like Loreena McKennit we add a popish flare to our performance. And like the Chieftains, we play many riling Celtic tunes. So what do you think? Pretty good endorsements? Do you have an idea what kind of music my band plays? What it sounds like? Guess what? Sure I'd "liken" my bands to those and now when you next hear those names, you will think of the Brobdingnagian Bards (although you may not be able to say it, at least The Bards) and you will think of me.But you know (read full article)

Article Title :: Riding the Waves of Another's Success

Even better than just endorsing other companies is trading endorsements. There are several advantages to it. For you, your endorsee would promote you to their clients, and your name would be linked to a successful business. For them, you are a travelling billboard. You cover a lot of territory that those businesses might not have the opportunity or means to market to.But what happens when no company wants to endorse you? Well, your endorsee would no longer promote you to their clients. BUT, your name could still be linked to that successful business. This is guerrilla marketing at it's finest. Find a company you like. We'll use Coca-Cola as an example. Promote Coke on your fl (read full article)

Article Title :: Building a Successful Freelance Band

It's amazing how many different places you can find inspiration for your musical career. I was reading a book on copywriting, when I came across some great tips. I adapted them for musicians.FYI. I edited the info a little (like cutting the typewriter comments), and then focused on a small-named band who's getting started booking gigs outside the normal realm of booking like clubs, bars and coffee houses.1. Never tell anyone you're not successful. Always say you are. Success is a relative term. Are you successful? At what? You're playing live. Yes, you are successful compared to other musicians who aren't. There are a helluva lot who don't get out of the practice room. So be (read full article)

Article Title :: How to Get People to Listen to your MP3s

The concept of the eBook (electronic book) is fantastic. You no longer need to find a publisher. No need to spend a fortune printing. No need to do anything but write. Now it might seem kinda silly to for a band to give away an eBook when they have countless CDs and can copy/paste MP3s out the wazzoo, but why not? It's the silly things that make an impact. My suggestion is instead of giving away MP3s, give away an eBook.Let me explain why. MP3s are rampant, especially since Napster started. People are downloading MP3 left and right. There is a surplus. Too many for people to handle and give significant thought to. Their attention is held for a few minutes. Then on comes the next MP (read full article)

Article Title :: Your New Best Friend - The Mailing List

For startup musicians, email is a gift of God. When I first started managing bands a number of years ago, I spent hours licking stamps and sending out postcards for upcoming gigs, spending over $100 on people that never showed up to my bands' gigs. We didn't even make that much at the gig, and we were blowing money left and right.Don't get me wrong. For a band that sticks around, $100 for one fan is worth it, in my opinion, because that fan will be tell friends, buy CDs, and more, but there is a cheaper alternative. Start your own band ezine. If you don't already have one, I strongly urge you to head over to eGroups.com and setup your own newsletter. If you haven't already, s (read full article)

Article Title :: Italy Lesson: Venice

Two weeks ago, I went to Italy to visit family and see the country. I was a military brat, so I've been there plenty of times before, but nevertheless, it was a magnificent and learning experience, both artistically and as a guerrilla marketer. So for the next few weeks, I'm gonna take you on a brief tour of Italy, and show you what I learned from my trips. I'll take you from Venice to Florence, Pisa and Rome, plus few places thrown in. The travel industry is an outstanding resource for learning about marketing, so let's get started.Italy Lesson: VeniceOf all the cities in Italy, Venice is my favorite. There's some sort of deep connection between me and Venice. Perhaps it is (read full article)

Article Title :: One Fan to Fire Up the Furnace

We live in a high-speed world. We want every thing now. Sadly, the "I want it now" attitude does not working in the field of marketing. Marketing is all cafefully planned, that's why you must assume the position of the bard.Bards of old traveled the world and weaved their musical webs to whomever would listen. If there were even one person, then the bard would cast his spell. And in the world of music you have to build your fan base one fan at a time.I remember my first band. I hooked up to sing with this glam rock band a decade ago. We were about to play in the rec room of our dormitory. There were a dozen people and I was excited. It was my first opportunity to play on sta (read full article)

Article Title :: It's Not Who You Know, It's Who You Meet

In Ireland a few hundred years ago, feudal lords ruled the land. The lay people did not interact with lords. People could exist their whole lives and never meet, or for that matter, see their reigning lord, unless you were a bard.Bards had the luxury of being exempt from many of the laws of the land. Why? Bards traveled extensively. They met countless people, and they kept communities informed on what was happening in other communities. They relayed the news, and were supreme networkers! That's why I've been signing up with more and more organizations around town. Last night, I went to the Austin Celtic Association meeting despite the fact I had taxes waiting at home. I sat a (read full article)
