Article Title :: How to Choose and Buy an Acoustic Guitar

Knowing how to choose the right guitar and how to identify a bad one will save you from countless headaches, not to mention finger aches. Also, choosing the right acoustic can be tough, especially these days, when there are so many styles to choose from. Acoustic guitar bodies come in basically the same shape, with some variations, but they do vary in size, colour, wood-type, style, and extra features. You can even buy an acoustic guitar so small that fits into a hiking backpack. The most common type of guitar in use today is the folk-style of guitar. This is the guitar you will see played around most campfires and parties, and is the one found in most music groups, church choirs, and in  (read full article)

Article Title :: American Idol Wannabees: Do Us All A Favor?

Don't practice. Dress funny. Seriously. That's why we watch. We love to see you struggle, embarrass yourselves & get tortured by Simon. Come on, admit it. You like it too, right? Sure, Clay Aiken and Kelly Clarkson made us cheer and dial the phone until our fingers were raw (I nearly cried when my pick for 2004, Fantasia Barrino, won), but the real joy comes from watching those of you who don't have a chance. Who will forget William Hung's painful, yet stoic audition? It'll go down in history as one of the best moments on TV. But, have you ever wondered why we find pleasure in seeing others fail so miserably in public? The answer is simple: "There but for the grace of God, go I".   (read full article)

Article Title :: Sending Your Demo. Doing it Right

Tip #1 - Put your contact information on everything. This may sound simple but it is one of the biggest mistakes people make when they send me demos. Use a clear font like Arial or NY Time Roman at decent size. If you are sending a CD make sure the CD is clearly labeled with your name, phone number, email address and website if you have one. This same information should appear on your business card if you have one as well. Make sure if your sending a picture you include your information on that as well. Most professional headshots can have your name and contact info at the bottom of the photo. If you cant afford big time photography at least right your contact info on the back of th  (read full article)

Article Title :: Guitar lesson: How To Improvise The Classical Guitar Way

When I was a fifteen years old guitarist playing rock solos and classical guitar pieces I remember that I had a desire to be able to improvise on my guitar in a classical manner. Nowadays I have developed this skill and I love to improvise in the style of composers like Sor, Tarrega, Paganini or others or just trying to find myself somewhere among the notes. These special moments are a form of meditation. They clear my mind and also helps me as a composer to stimulate my creative abilities. The most important reason for learning classical guitar improvisation is that it's fun! If you learn classical guitar improvisation it will benefit you in many other ways too: 1. It will be easier fo  (read full article)

Article Title :: WHAT IS AN ARPEGGIO?

Perhaps you have heard the word arpeggio being tossed around by other musicians, but have absolutely no clue what they were talking about. Simply defined, an arpeggio refers to playing the notes within a chord in rapid succession. On the guitar, this can be done by either using a pick or your fingers. Incorporating arpeggios into your guitar playing can be a very simple matter, or a very complicated one, depending on your approach to the subject. Because I am a guitar teacher, I generally try to find ways to introduce my students to new techniques that are easy to understand and relatively easy to do. So let's see if I can help you learn how to play an arpeggio today. If you want to use a  (read full article)

Article Title :: Music and Culture

Since the beginning of time, the world has had a fascination with music. It has been at the forefront of every social gathering and in every society. Music has a way of setting a tone for any venue, and whether it includes lyrics or not, it speaks to all of us. It seems as though every culture in the world has its own preferred style of music. The rhythms are developed through generations, and seem to evolve in never-ending chain. However, despite all of its evolution, each culture still is able to maintain its own style, and heritage. Much like speech, music has a way of changing to suit its own society, yet still maintain its base. If you look at the differences in American music, you c  (read full article)
