| Article Title :: Non-Smoking Live-Music Clubs? |
| |
|
Everyone would probably agree that people would be better off,
if they CHOSE not to: drink alcoholic beverages, use illegal and
prescription drugs, smoke cigars and cigarettes, and use other
such "substances". Unfortunately, human nature being what it is,
the world is far from a perfect place, so many people do choose
to use these substances, for a variety of reasons. However,
there are people in the world who think that they can create a
Utopian society by forcing people not to do these things!
Part of the guarantee given to citizens living in a free society
is the right to make their own decisions, about how to live
their lives, even if they are bad decisions, and even if they
are self-d (read full article) |

| Article Title :: Shure SM 7 Dynamic Microphone Review |
| |
|
The Shure SM7 dynamics mic came highly recommended from the
various professional recording engineers that I've talked to
online. Many pro recording guys say that the SM7 should be one
of the first mics that you buy. I now know why.
The Shure SM7b is basically an upgraded SM57. It looks much
different than an SM57 and sounds different for a number of
reasons. The SM7 started out as a voiceover microphone. If you
watch Howard Stern, you'll notice that Robin uses a Shure SM7.
I'm not sure about the guts inside, but one feature that makes
the Shure SM7 a different microphone is the position of the
capsule. They actually built a cage about 2-3" around the
capsule. So even if your lips are touch (read full article) |

| Article Title :: Sansamp Bass DI |
| |
|
I once read an article where some big boy engineer guy who had
his name on a a couple number one hits back in the mid 80s
stayed busy for years based entirely off a bass sound he nailed
on some Peter Gabriel song. He said that everyone wanted him to
engineer their recordings because they wanted that bass sound.
The ironic thing about the situation is the engineer admits now
that he did nothing different on that bass sound than he had on
the numerous other records he had done. Of course, no one cared
much about the bass sound on the other records. It turns out
that the only change in the equation was the song and the
player. The engineer said that this one particular bass player
just sound (read full article) |

| Article Title :: Review of the Rivera Knucklehead Guitar Amp |
| |
|
I've owned my Rivera Knucklehead since 1998. It's a small part
of my guitar amp collection which consists of more than 5 amps.
I'll tell you how the Rivera Knucklehead performs both on stage
and in the studio.
Not surprising, Rivera is owned by some guy named Paul Rivera. I
guess it's a little surprising that his name is Paul, but that's
about it. While I hate to spread rumors about facts I don't
know, this is press, and that's that the press is all about. The
rumor on the street is that Paul Rivera worked for both Marshall
and Fender for years modifying guitar amplifiers for the rock
stars that could afford to have them modified. If this is true,
it will explain a lot about the Rivera Knu (read full article) |

| Article Title :: Should I Buy A Powerful Recording Computer? |
| |
|
It's quite impressive just how fast computers have gotten over
the years. When it comes to recording audio, do modern computers
have enough processing power? Should you buy the best or should
save a few bucks and cut a few corners? This article will answer
these questions and more.
Back when I started recording at home in 2001, I had a Pentium 3
550 Mhz computer with 384 MB of Ram. I recorded a number of
projects on the 9GB hard drive until I eventually added a 40GB
hard drive to the equation. I was quite limited in what I could
do on that computer, but I was limited by a number of factors.
The biggest limiting factor at that time was not the power of my
PC, but my recording engineering sk (read full article) |

| Article Title :: The Problem With Recording Schools |
| |
|
It seams that every recording magazine has a glorious picture of
some billion dollar recording studio filled with the best gear
and huge recording console. This seams to get a lot of kids
excited. Does this show what the music industry truly is and
does it give kids the wrong impression?
I remember about 5 years ago. I bitten by the recording studio
bug. Before I knew it, I had maxed out a few credit cards and
taken out a large loan to pay for enough recording gear to
record a full band. I was excited about recording bands. I knew
nothing, but I certainly wanted to learn. I saw a few ads in
beginner recording magazines for these immaculate looking
studios combined with classrooms. I though (read full article) |

| Article Title :: How I Started My Studio Business |
| |
|
A lot of recording studios are popping up as the price of high
quality recording gear gets cheaper and cheaper. While many guys
know they want to record other bands and would like to even get
paid for it, many are not sure how to get started.
I remember back when I decided I was ready to start recording
bands. I went to a local "metalfest", setup a table, told
everyone I charged $20 an hour, and nothing happened. I mean
NOTHING happened. It was a total waste of time. So I went back
to the drawing board and had to rethink my strategy.
I'm a firm believer that you must give someone something if you
want something in return. Take the approach of your potential
customers. "What's in it for me (read full article) |

| Article Title :: How Does A Compressor Make An Audio Track Louder? |
| |
|
A compressor is probably the most misunderstood of all tools in
the recording studio. Ironically, it's also one of the most
powerful tools when recording or mixing. While there are many
aspects of a compressor that could be written about, I'm going
to explain how a compressor can make an audio track louder.
So you want to learn how to use a compressor? Well good luck. It
takes years to get even a decent feel for a compressor. I'm just
now getting where I feel that a compressor will tolerate me
playing with it's settings. In the past, it was just laughing
and mocking me because I just didn't understand how to use it to
improve my recordings.
So let's talk about how a compressor can make a (read full article) |

| Article Title :: Does Your Band Need a Promotion Package? |
| |
|
Does your band need a Promotion Package/Press Kit? Lately, The
Blog has put forth the proposition that local bands should
broaden their horizons, open up new opportunities, and increase
their earnings by booking gigs at fairs, festivals and casinos. However, it is highly unlikely
that this will happen without a first-class,
professional-looking Promotion Package!
The Promotion Package is usually the first substantive contact
with the person who has the power to book your band. It will be
the first impression they get, and if it's not a good one, it
will probably be the last time you will hear from them!
What should the Promotion Package do? I think it should tell the
reader who the band i (read full article) |
