| Article Title :: San Antonio Rocks Review: Sintense, Open Chapter and El Sancho
at Rock City Bar |
| |
|
Friday night we headed out once again to Rock City Bar, this
time to catch Sintense, Open Chapter and El Sancho. I hadn't
heard much about El Sancho, so I had no idea what to expect.
We walked in about halfway through their set and I wish we had
gotten there a little earlier to catch the whole thing.
Put together the reggae rock of Sublime and the funk rock of the
Red Hot Chili Peppers and you'll get something like El Sancho.
They really mix it up - every song sounds different, and I love
that. I was talking to some of the guys after their set, and
they told me that they're always writing new songs and that they
play a different setlist at every show. That's cool - keep it
fresh - you neve (read full article) |

| Article Title :: Hurricane Katrina- Can Music Help? |
| |
|
I don't know about you, but lately I've been encouraged to see
the great outpouring of public concern for the victims of
Hurricane Katrina. In times of personal distress and dispair,
it's comforting to know that there are people who care and are
willing to help in any way they can. One of my own guitar
students who is a veterinarian, recently went over to offer his
expertise where needed. And perhaps you've seen some of the
special concerts that have been aired on T.V. this past week.
Musicians and entertainers such as Paul Simon, James Taylor,
Nora Jones, Bill Cosby, Robin Williams and others, coming
together to share their gifts and talents in an effort to raise
money for the people who h (read full article) |

| Article Title :: The Fretboard Master |
| |
|
Having been a guitar player for over 20 years, I am often amazed
at the number of guitarists that have never taken the time to
learn the notes on their fretboard. I have met guitar players
that gig on a regular basis, and yet are unable to find a C# on
the 3rd string, an A natural on the 4th string or an F natural
on any string! Little do they know that by learning this one
simple thing, their playing and enjoyment of the instrument will
increase ten fold!
It was while studying at the Guitar Institute in London that I
first realised that many players do not develop this part of
their playing. This realisation prompted me to want to find a
way that guitar players could learn this simple th (read full article) |

| Article Title :: Ouch, It Hurts When I Sing! |
| |
| When I first set out to write this article about voice problems in singers, I was looking for two experts from contrasting fields of medicine – "medical" and "holistic". What I found, instead, in the first practitioner that I interviewed, was a delightful mixture of the two.The following biography of Dr. Brian Hands was taken from the website VOX Cura, his Toronto clinic. There is a link to the website at the bottom of this article."Dr. Brian Hands, M.D., FRCS (C), is a member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in his field of laryngology, sits on the Board of the Canadian Voice Foundation, is a member of the Voice Foundation in the U.S. and is on the editoria (read full article) |

| Article Title :: Learn to Fiddle the Orange Blossom Special, the Most Popular Fiddle Tune in the World |
| |
| Learning to fiddle the Orange Blossom Special is not easy, but it's truly worth the effort. The Orange Blossom Special is unequaled in popularity. To learn it you must master three distinct parts. Each of these parts has its own character and style. They are: 1. Bells, whistles, chugga-chugga’s, 2. the Shuffle, 3. the Hoedown.Bells, Whistles, Chugga-chugga’sThis is the introductory part of the tune. It starts up right after the rhythm is put down, by guitar, and other instruments usually. The first whistle to master is made by the G# on the D string and the B on the A string. This double stop takes two of the chord notes from the E major chord and m (read full article) |

| Article Title :: Irish Fiddle Ornaments |
| |
| When I started playing jigs, my default bowing pattern made a groove like Pop Goes the Weasel: "Long-short, long-short, muberry bush, the long-short, long-short weasel."And that still works for me without having to think about it. The one rule to keep in mind is: Do not slur from one string to another. This is unlike Irish reels. There, you can and do slur from one string to another. But not in jigs.
Getting the hang of ornamentsI think of the Irish fiddle ornaments as falling into melodic and percussive categories. The three most common melodic moves are, the grace note, the triplet, the roll. These moves all use "neighbor notes." Any no (read full article) |

| Article Title :: How to Be in the Moment when Playing Piano |
| |
| Your best music will always come when you are in the moment and just playing the piano. Why is this? Because you have forgotten about trying to make music. Instead, you are now "making" music. A subtle but crucial difference that can be detected by most careful listeners. The key to being in the moment when playing piano comes when the technical aspects are mastered and the player can just play. Think of sports as an example. Michael Jordan didn't have to think about how to drive the basketball to the hoop. He had done it thousands of times. Now he could allow his intuition to guide him in making the best shot.If Andre Agassi had to think about how to hit the tennis ball, he (read full article) |
