| Article Title :: Low Calorie Diets and Atherosclerosis |
| |
| I have written quite a bit recently on the positive effect that a calorie restricted diet can have on one's health. For example, in one study people on a reduced calorie diet had dramatically lower cholesterol levels. In another very well designed trial researchers showed that those on low calorie diets had better heart function than those on a standard American diet.People who are on Caloric Restriction (CR) diets consume a variety of foods that supply 100% or more of the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of all the essential nutrients, while minimizing the number of calories they eat (usually between about 1200 and 2000 calories per day). In general, about 26% of their calories c (read full article) |

| Article Title :: Good News for Women Who Drink Coffee |
| |
| There's a good bit of medical lore that says that caffeine will increase your blood pressure. It's true in the sense that there are short-term clinical studies that show that caffeine intake can raise blood levels of stress hormones associated with hypertension, but these studies have all been only up to a week or so in length. Recently a team of researchers at Harvard published the first study of the effects of long-term caffeine intake among women (JAMA. 2005;294:2330-2335 ). The study followed two groups of female registered nurses:53,175 women, 32-55 years of age, between 1990 and 200287,369 women, 25-42 years of age, between 1 (read full article) |

| We are all very familiar with the four food groups on which we were weaned and have likely been filling up on ever since. There is another food group that has grown in popularity over the last 50 years but was never crowned officially as a food group. This food group crowds the shelves in grocery stores and in many of our kitchen cupboards. It is popular in the schools and in our children’s lunches. It is a big hit on Super Bowl Sunday, every Sunday, and every day for that matter. | Article Title :: My Mama Knew Best What to Feed Me - Or Did She? |
| |
| I, a crazy, self-professed health and fitness nut, have a confession.I love the foods my mother used to fix for me and my five brothers and sisters. I love chicken, mashed potatoes, and gravy and the warm, fuzzy feeling I get when I remember all of us kids sitting at the dinner table.I love hamburgers with all the trimmings and the fun we used to have at our neighborhood summertime barbeques.I love sandwiches my mom made me for lunch—peanut butter and jelly, egg salad, tuna fish, cream cheese and olives, BLTs, and roast beef on brown-colored white bread.I love eggs, bacon, and toast, thickly smeared with butter and jam, which I gulped down before the school (read full article) |

| Most of us believe that more protein is necessary for increased strength and fitness and higher energy. | And as far as energy is concerned, what are the very best food sources for fuel and energy?Believe it or not, protein is NOT nature’s most efficient source of fuel and energy for our bodies.Without question, carbohydrates are the most efficient sources of fuel and energy for the human body.Contrary to common belief and the doctrines of so many loudly touted and very lucrative weight loss programs and diets, carbohydrates are not always the bad guys, even though they have certainly gotten a bum rap in the last while.Unrefined plant sources of carbohydrates in the form of whole, fresh fruits and vegetables and whole grains and beans are our best sources of fuel (read full article) |

| Article Title :: Shattering the Meat and Protein Myth |
| |
| The question to explore here is: Why do we all believe that we must eat meat to get enough protein?Let’s go back many years ago to the year 1914.In 1914, two men by the names of Osborn and Mendel experimented with rats. They discovered that rats grew faster when they ate protein from animal foods than when they ate protein from plant foods.Based on this information, these two men classified meat protein as class “A” protein and plant protein as class “B” protein. Those classifications automatically categorized animal protein as superior to plant protein. To this day, many Americans still believe that animal protein is superior to plant protein.Fro (read full article) |

| How often have you heard people say “don’t eat any fat if you want to lose weight.” Or, "fat is the worst thing you can eat." Up until recently, this has been the norm - people cutting fat out of their diet in order to shed those stubborn lbs.Without going into great detail, Essential Fatty Acids or EFA’s are Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) are necessary fats that humans cannot naturally create, and must be obtained through diet.
