Article Title :: The Truth About Carbohydrates

Hello friends,Welcome once again to your regular healthy living bulletin. This week I want to talk about carbohydrates. While I am working in class and with my clients, I find that there is still a lot of confusion about Carbohydrates. I largely blame this on the Atkins frenzy, which although past its peak, has left many of us wary of this essential food group. We have been lead to view this important nutrient with caution, associating it with weight gain, wheat allergies and bloating. Billion-dollar industries propagated the myth that carbohydrates were bad and caused weight gain, and then sold us diets and foods, and meal-replacement bars etc. These diets and products have (read full article)

Article Title :: Ten Top Tips for Healthier Lunchboxes

Kids adore ‘kid food’- fun, colorful, mini-size, cartoon-covered, ready-made, TV-advertised tasty snacks that are easy to buy and convenient to pack into a lunch box. Unfortunately these foods are usually packed with bad nutrition- fat, sugar, salt and additives. Even the foods which appeal to you as a parent because they claim to be healthy are usually expensive and almost always unhealthy. Often pester power wins, and because other children are allowed chocolate biscuits and crisps, it seems unfair to deny your child these fun products. We can all take positive steps to make our children more healthy, and if we work together as a team, then so much the better. Lets try to squas (read full article)

Article Title :: The Facts About Salt in Our Childrens Diet

| SaltThe stark message being delivered to parents and carers is that feeding children salty foods condemns them to high blood pressure in later life. According to Consensus Action on Salt and Health (CASH) the upper safe limit for salt consumption is;6 grams for adults
Children age 7-14 5 grams
Children age 1-6 2 grams
(Babies should have no salt at all)Recent surveys have shown that adults are consuming between 10 and 12 grams of salt a day, three times more than the body needs, and children, who require even less salt, are consuming the same amount as adults. This is thought to be largely to do with children’s high intake of breakfast cereals, snacks (read full article) |

Article Title :: The Facts About Fats in Our Childrens Diet

FatSome years ago health visitors were reporting a rash of reports on under-weight toddlers in middle-income households. Concerned parents were putting their small children on low-fat diets, believing this to be healthy. Unfortunately, the opposite is true. Fats are essential to everyone’s health. Between 25 and 30% of our daily calories should come from fats, and they are extremely important for children and adults. Fat contains 9 calories per gram, and is energy-dense compared to carbohydrates and proteins (4 calories/g). Although you need up to 30% calories from fat, the actual weight volume of fat on your plate should be small.Fats are used by the body for warmth (read full article)

Article Title :: DON'T Drink Your Calories!

If you drink soda pop, especially the caffeinated kind, it could kill you. But most especially, it can go right after your kid’s health. Pop gives the average teenager approximately 12.5 teaspoons of refined sugar a day. It works out to that much more than what our US government has determined people need in unrefined sugar per day. Also, your kid and you are using soda pop, in all probability, as a food. In 1977-78, teenagers drank twice as much milk as soft drinks, but by 1994-96, it had turned around; they were drinking twice as much soda as they were drinking milk. And such consumption is linked with lower intake of nutrients, such as vitamins, minerals and fiber. After readin (read full article)

Article Title :: Glyconutrients - The Next Household Word?

| Glyconutrients are considered by top doctors and scientists as the most important discovery in recent medical history relating to human health and wellness. Glyconutrients, a grouping of eight 'biological' sugars, are found in one nutrient complex called Ambrotose. They are not vitamins, minerals, herbals, homeopathics or enzymes. They are a class all to themselves. Glyconutrient essentially means 'sweet nutrient.' They are supplements derived from nature that have been formulated based on a new understanding in biochemistry of how our bodies maintain health at the
cellular level. This new discovery is as significant as the
discovery of the role of vitamins, essential fatty acids,

Article Title :: Got Cravings? Consider the Yin and Yang of Your Food

It’s 10 a.m., you’re at work, and you’re bored. The bagel you had for breakfast earlier just wasn’t that satisfying, and the woman in the cube next to yours has a bowl of Hershey kisses on her desk. You walk by the chocolates a few times, and finally just go ahead and grab a few. At lunchtime you pick up a deli sandwich that comes with a bag of potato chips and a brownie, and you eat your lunch while you answer emails. A few hours later you start falling asleep at your desk. You’re craving sweets, and a trip to the vending machine for a Snickers bar helps you stay awake and finish up your day. By the time you make your way through the evening rush hour and back home, you’re fe (read full article)
