Article Title :: A Single Parent Finds A Way To Teach Her Kids About Being "Savers" Vs. "Over-Spenders"

As a widowed/single parent, I wanted to find a way to financially educate my children and to teach them to be savers first, not over-spenders. Like most children, mine would immediately start whining about wanting everything they saw in the stores and begging me to buy those things. So I decided to start giving my children an allowance to minimize the "I want monster" when we go to stores. But, not just any old allowance!I explained to them that each week I would give them their allowance, but not in the form of cash... but a check. We would go to the bank each week, fill out a savings deposit ticket (which they do, I supervise) and deposit most of the check. They need to give (read full article)

| Once you have finished gathering all your divorce information, sought all the divorce advice that was out there, found divorce help by hiring an attorney and financial planner… after you have learned everything there is to know about how to get a divorce there is one decision that has no fast, cut-and-dried answers: how to raise your children in two households.Custody of the children can be a major talking point when negotiating a divorce settlement. | Article Title :: How to Make a Reader to a Writer? |

“My daughter reads all the time, but she doesn’t seem interested in writing,” Molly’s mother worried. As the director of an after school writing program, I hear this complaint frequently. I gave Molly’s mother my typical response,“Congratulations! You’ve already won half the battle.”If your children enjoy reading, when they start writing regularly they will have a built-in a resource that will encourage them to experiment with tone, improve sentence structure, and expand their vocabularies. Children do some of their best learning unconsciously; they have a fantastic capacity to absorb and reprocess. Once an avid reader gets past writing blocks, their writing (read full article)

Article Title :: Removing the 'Step' Out of Fathering Your Wife's Children

It was about 7AM on a Saturday morning, and I was just turning over to position myself for another 3 or 4 hours of sleep. All of a sudden, I feel a gentle tap on my bare shoulder blade. I slowly open my eyes to find the biggest doe eyes staring at me. The little four-year-old princess standing beside the bed whispered, ”I’m hungry.” I glanced at my wife, who was lying as motionless as possible, and I slid out of the cozy bed to prepare bacon and eggs. That’s when I realized the change. I’m not step-dad anymore. I’m a real father. When I was single, I always avoided relationships with women who had children. I dated quite a bit, so I was not desperate to get marr (read full article)

Article Title :: Character Building: What Are We Teaching Our Kids?

Have you ever wondered why you were blessed with your child? With all the different temperaments in the world to be put together, God has placed you and your child together. Sometimes it's almost funny to see how similar or contrasting a parent and child's personalities are. There are times that I have thought "What in the world were you thinking, God?" Do you really think this child with this personality can live under a roof with me for 18 years? Is this some kind of joke? But I always get reassured that it is no joke just a character building experience that I will endure for several seasons until I have grown spiritually and emotionally. We think that we are the teachers and rol (read full article)

Article Title :: Should I Get My Child to Learn How to Type as Soon as Possible?

The answer is an astounding YES, for the following benefits I am about to show you. Most educators and parents still believe that we should wait until the student is ready before we can teach them how to type. The truth of the matter is that typing doesn’t require more motor skills than handwriting. If we don’t wait till children are “ready” to hold a pencil to write, we shouldn’t wait till they are “ready” to touch the keyboard. The most effective way to teach young children how to write is to give them a pencil and paper. Teaching young children to type is no different. My experience has shown me that teaching young children to type early has many benefits.I b (read full article)

Article Title :: Ten Tips for Dealing with Temper Tantrums

Whenever David doesn’t get his way he throws himself on the floor, screams, kicks and cries incessantly. What can we do to help him overcome this behavior?TIP: What is David getting out of this behavior. First make sure that you are not rewarding this type of behavior, positively or negatively because both will help keep it alive. If you eventually give in to this behavior by changing your initial decision (not letting David go out to play, refusing David a cookie), David has learned that tantrums work. Hence, when David wants his way he may think, “ a good tantrum just may get me that candy bar, it got me out of bedtime last night.” Negative attention (yelling, threatening, (read full article)

Article Title :: A Mom, A Mirror, and an Opportunity to Teach a Young Man

One day several years ago, my son and I had driven to the local miniature golf course (he was about nine at the time). It was not easy to maneuver my large, half-ton truck into the teeny little parking spaces provided. While squishing into the only parking space available, my truck grazed the outer portion of the side mirror of the car next to us. I quickly jumped out to take a look and found that the damage was extremely minimal, but still, I could see a slight scrape in the paint where my truck had brushed it. I was certain that the scrape would never be noticed by the owner of the car, and every fiber in my body wanted to park the truck and go inside, ignoring the scrape and forgetting (read full article)
