Article Title :: Invest in Your Children's Album

When I got married, my spouse asked many questions about my childhood, my parents and what we did and looked like when we were young. I didn't have all the answers and as far as pictures went, my mom owned the good ones. So I went to my mom and pored through the old pictures, begging for this one and that one so that I could start my own album. Invariably, the answer was, "No, you can't have it, this is the only one of that person and it means a lot to me." She added that I could borrow it to copy but I would have to return it the next day. Some of my relatives and indeed some of my own baby pictures were already irretrievably lost. Certainly, the gift of a nice camera should be a (read full article)

Article Title :: Removing the 'Step' Out of Fathering Your Wife's Children (Part II)

Recently, a friend approached me about “Removing the ‘Step’...” Part I, with a few choice words of criticism. She said that she enjoyed the article, but there were a few issues in which she took offense. Normally I would have told a critic that opinions are like socks, everybody has so many of them that they seem to get lost in the shuffle of life. But since the friend was my pastor’s wife, I thought that maybe I should find a good match for this instance. And because this particular publication prefers to publish articles that are around 700 words or so, I’ll discuss each of the two issues in a series: Part II and Part III.To give you some background, “Removing t (read full article)

Article Title :: How to Use Harry Potter to Teach Your Children About Bravery

If a child's fun comes naturally why do they quickly learn to be afraid as they grow older? We adults are responsible. We, of course, are merely teaching our children the "rules" as we were taught; passing along our fears to our children comes as naturally for us as being too serious (and being too serious, in turn, comes from our fear).Watch children. Left to their own devices a child's fun comes naturally, they are not inclined to be afraid. We instill it in them. I'm not referring to being afraid to cross a street, touch a hot iron, or play with matches. Those are good, healthy fears that our children need. The fear I refer to is the illusionary variety; fears like scarcity (read full article)

I remember, almost 14 years ago, bringing my son Kai home from the hospital. We had borrowed an old car seat from someone we knew. I placed all 6 lbs 14 oz. of him into the car seat and suddenly burst into tears. The car seat was way too big for him. I really felt I had failed him. I mean what kind of mother doesn't know he needed an infant car seat? The sudden awareness that I didn't know what I was doing hit me like a ton of bricks. The nurses were gone and I was on my own. From the moment you become pregnant until the day you or your child dies, you try to be the very best mom you can be to your children. It doesn't take long, however, before you make mistakes. Parenting (read full article)
