 Article Title :: Social Skills Training for Parents and Educators: The Micro Steps are the Key to Success
What we Learned in Kindergarten In pre-school, where a big chunk of the curriculum revolves around sociability, you can hear the specific details of a social behavior weaving through the daily dialogue. Listen to the teacher: "Sit in your spot and put your hands in your lap. Wait until it is your turn to speak. Raise your hand to say something." Keep to the schedule: "It's time to stop what you are doing. Pick up the toys. Put them neatly in their spots on the shelf. Then come sit quietly on the carpet." There you have the clearly articulated, easily visualized micro steps that teach preschoolers to socialize, organize and 'behave' in a group setting. Then as a  (read full article)

 Article Title :: Lessons for Life: Childhood Talents
Red Skelton said: If you have a talent, It is a gift from God. If you develop that talent, It is a gift to God.When our children were young, we tinkered with their surroundings. We knew that each of our five children had talents, but what were they? It was important that their talents be developed early before they could wither on the vine.Suppose that you have a daughter that has a talent for the piano capable of becoming a concert pianist. When the child is 19 years old, you start her on piano lessons. Will she ever be a concert pianist?All things are possible! But all things are not probable.What if you start the child on the   (read full article)

 Article Title :: Harry Potter; Hero or Heathen?
Whether you are 2 years old or 82, you’ve probably heard of Harry Potter. Maybe you too did not understand who he is but he’s everywhere! I started out doing some history research about Halloween, but curiosity once again dragged me elsewhere, into the unknown world of Harry Potter. Halloween is one of my least favored holidays, so I never encouraged it much while my kids were growing up. Everything is about choices in life, our children’s heroes and fads change, some we accept, some we don’t. Right now seems to be the Harry Potter movement, or phenomenon, and somehow it seems more complicated than a ‘fad’ or hero, somehow there seems to be a hidden agenda. I compare it to a  (read full article)

 Article Title :: Kids Not Listening? - Top 10 Tips to Deal With It!
As parents we have all faced it. The kids are not listening to you without you repeating yourself over and over and it's driving you crazy. You give them chances or count to ten and they still won't listen. Here are some tips to deal with it.1. Consider Their AgeWhen I took human development in nursing school I was surprised to learn that children's nervous systems grow at a slow pace. Children simply aren't capable of some of the things we expect out of them. Don't think of them as little adults. That doesn't mean that we can't set limits. On the contrary - as parents, it's one of our responsibilities. But we may have to patiently step in to set those limits physical  (read full article)

 Article Title :: Mature Parenting: It's Not Just A Job, It's A Career
The world has always been a complex place. Parents have always thought that their children suffered from having it too easy because of technological advancement. Children have always thought their parents were out of touch with the happenings of the day. And historically, most cultures of the world fail to consider should they do a new fangled thing versus can they do a new fangled thing.There are always people who resist change. I am not talking about them even though they represent a group that also fails to consider the consequences of action or the lack of action. This group of peoples’ behavior is fear based and while fear plays an important role in survival, the beauty  (read full article)

 Article Title :: Talk to Your Teens About Sex (Even if it Makes You Blush)
Your teens may be sexually active or thinking about it. Teens get most of their sex information from peers and much of it is false. For example, some teens think drinking a can of soda pop before sex prevents pregnancy. How many other falsehoods have they heard?What's true is that the U.S. has the highest rate of teen pregnancy in the industrialized world.Teen sexual activity increases as grade level increases. According to a 2003 CDC study, 62% of 12th graders had engaged in sexual intercourse, as compared with 33% of ninth graders. Another study, "Sex and America's Teenagers," conducted in 1994, says teens account for 25% of the STD cases that occur yearly in the U.S.  (read full article)

 Article Title :: Recess Boo Boos
My grandson started kindergarten this week. It’s always tough when a distant dream becomes a frightening reality. The adjustment has been difficult. The first day was long and filled with anxiety. There was great apprehension, much fear and worrying, and a whole lot of sobbing . . . but I survived. The second day was a little easier for me; but my son, who is a stay-at-home dad, was a nervous wreck.We hate to see our little sweetie grow up and go out into the big, bad world ALL ALONE. Why do kids begin school at such a tender age, anyway? Five is so young. They should wait until at least twelve. I see these little cherubs walking to school and I wonder, "How can their mother  (read full article)

 Article Title :: Night Sounds
Cobi is five years old. Like most kids his age, he doesn’t understand the reasoning behind going to sleep when he still has energy left and there are still hours in the day. One night I was unusually tired and eager to get some sleep, but Cobi was wide awake and resisting sleep with all his power. He used every excuse he could think of to stay up. He needed a drink, then he needed to go to the bathroom, then he needed a particular stuffed animal that he’d left downstairs. After finally getting him tucked in, I went to brush my teeth.Over the sound of the water running, I heard him call,“Gra-a-a-a-a-a-ma.”“What’s wrong?” I called back.“I’  (read full article)

 Article Title :: Profound Question
“How do you feel when people are mean to you?” I asked. It was one of those rare “teachable moments.” My five year old grandson and I were sitting on the porch swing, enjoying a warm spring day. I had his undivided attention (or so I thought), so I seized the opportunity to discuss a subject I’d been wanting to bring up at just the right time.“I don’t like it,” was his predictable reply -- just what I’d hoped he would say. I explained that others feel that same way when he’s unkind to them.To my delight, he seemed to be listening for a change. He pursed his lips and stared at me in silence with wide eyes.“If you don’t share your toys with ot  (read full article)

 Article Title :: The "Easy Button" Is The Sign of the Apocalypse
Have you ever had the pleasure of standing in a cashier’s line when, for any number of reasons, the computer goes down? Have you had to deal with the vapid stare of the clerk who informs you that they will be unable to complete the transaction because they can’t make change without the computer telling them what it is? Fellow “old heads,” we have lived to see the “end of days.”I began to work in my family’s business when I was 9 years old. My grandfather taught me how to count change backward to the customer from their total charge and ending at the denomination that the customer provided. Today, the best you can get is the recitation of the number spit out by the  (read full article)
