Article Title :: Gifted Children: Could Your Child Be Gifted?
Gifted children are children whose abilities, talents and potentials are so outstanding that they set the child apart from his or her peers. Giftedness is generally considered to mean an IQ of 130 or above, along with high performance in any one of five areas: general intellectual ability, specific academic excellence (at math, for example), creative thinking (looking at questions and answers in a unique way), leadership ability, or artistic (including musical) ability.Gifted children are sometimes first identified when they excel in school, but most parents of gifted children suspect giftedness in their child before the child enters school. Refrain from giving critical comments like, "You"ll look more beautiful if you lose some pounds," or "Don't eat so much. It will m  (read full article)

Article Title :: Why Ask Why?
As the mother of three very inquisitive children, I hear the words "Why" and "What" several times per day. Many times I am unable to provide an acceptable explanation, yet they continue to quiz me. I've decided that I also deserve to ask a few "Why's" and "What's" myself. If anyone holds the answers to these questions, please send them my way! On PregnancyWhy is it that the individuals that tell you "natural childbirth is the only way to go" are all female, while the men all say that drugs are natural?  Article Title :: Ties That Bind
From the time we are brought into this world until the day we leave it, we are tied or connected to people, and then we have to loosen or undo that tie as we journey. For nine months a mother carries a child, then at birth the first tie is cut when the umbilical cord is severed. One can only imagine how traumatic that must feel for a baby to leave the coziness of the womb, turned upside down, slapped, suctioned, washed, handled, clothed, and fed within a few hours! That, of course, is the first beginning of life. Who would ever imagine all the other beginnings and endings this journey could hold.A parent’s responsibility would be to protect and nurture this baby with safe feedin  (read full article)

Article Title :: "Reflections" on Parenting
Why is it that we tend to not appreciate what we have until it’s gone? In the extra time that my mind has had freed up since my children have gone from home, I have found time for moments of reflection, time to learn to appreciate the present, and in hindsight wishing I could have appreciated the good stuff in parenting while I was in it. I have also gained a whole new perspective of ‘empty nest syndrome. You not only have to learn to live without the children action, friends in and out, dating, partying, school, exams, sports, arguments, curfews, sleepless nights, and a lot of balance, you have to learn to live with yourself, your own space and your spouse all over again. Maybe more  (read full article)

The Grandparent ConnectionHow many of us realized that Canada holds a special day in September dedicated to grandparents? Great as that may seem, as is Mother’s day and Father’s day, the love and appreciation that is in our hearts should be shown at every possible opportunity, one never knows when it could be your last! Life is precious; it is our gift, as are the loved ones blessed to us.Reflecting upon and enjoying the memories I have of my own grandparents, who are no longer with us, I realized how the circle of life is truly a miracle.  Article Title :: How to Choose a Breast Pump
When considering any expensive purchase do the research. Ask friends, family, new moms and especially lactation consultants for their thoughts and opinions. Because most breast pumps can not be returned once opened (due to hygienic issues) it is important to be sure that you are getting what you want and can afford. Here are some things to consider when buying any brand.Do I need a single or a double pump? To best answer this question you need to consider the time factor. Some new moms find that they do not have time to pump one side for 5-10 minutes and then continue to pump the other side. They would rather have one sitting where they can express milk and go back to   (read full article)

Article Title :: Breast Pumping at Work or in Public
First and foremost, make sure you have a comfortable, clean place to relax so that you can pump at work. It would be ideal if there was a place to sit and a sink. If not, there are still several things you can do to make sure you keep up your milk supply. If you do not have the luxury of a pumping room at work for privacy you can use a blanket or a guard to cover up. Many stores make fashionable robes to cover your chest while you nurse or pump. They are widely available and some even have pockets and tie around your neck so that your hands can be free to hold the pump.Another helpful tool would be a hands free pumping bra. These can be purchased at nursing stores or you can   (read full article)
