Article Title :: 21st Century Children
I didn’t have a child back in the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s and so on. Technically, I have nothing to compare raising a child in the 21st century too, except for my own childhood experiences, but I would have to say that raising a child now is more difficult than 30 years ago.I have to first start off by saying that no matter when you have your child it is not an easy job to raise the child properly. Raising a child in the 21st century is a constant challenge. How do you keep all the negativity that is on TV away from them while they grow up. It is good to know what goes on and I don’t want my kids to be “sheltered” but night after night on the news you hear about someone   (read full article)

Article Title :: Adoption: Patience and Discipline to Do the Next Thing
What do you when you are at wit’s end, frustrated, tired, angry, sad, or confused? You do the next thing. The primary focus in my life right now is waiting to receive a phone call from our adoption agency telling me I’m a Mommy. I’ve been waiting a long time to be a Mommy – 47 years, to be exact. We started this process in September of 2004. The timeframe to receive a “match” with a child in China was about 6 months from the time the Chinese authorities received our paperwork (called a dossier). Our dossier was received in China on April 28, 2005 – almost 9 months ago.Any day now we should receive a call that we have been matc  (read full article)

Article Title :: Parent Education - An Underrated Initiative
There’s an old saying that goes a bit like this, “If I knew better, I would do better.” Today parents are grappling with issues that no generation has experienced before. No one could have foreseen the effect television and computers have had on our society. Children are being exposed to everything, whether they are ready to understand it or not. There is a profound helplessness in the eyes of many parents as they desperately attempt to shield their children from the vile reality of life.Of course all the abductions, murder, alcohol, drug abuse and abandonment existed years ago, but because our communication practices were so primitive, you fortunately or unfortunately di  (read full article)

Article Title :: The Secret to Positive Parent Interactions
It is not a secret that parents are sometimes not the easiest people to get along with or understand. They come in all shapes and sizes, all races and cultures. So is there any wonder why teachers and parents sometimes hit a bump as they together travel down the proverbial path called education. Everyone involved in the educational process must be reminded that each is looking at their concerns from a different vantage point and although neither is wrong, they are often different.Teachers know the dynamics of education, educating, child development and working with children. Parents know the dynamics of love, compassion, advocating for their child and protection. Where is the   (read full article)

Article Title :: A Helping Hand - Schools Volunteers
There is no secret that volunteering activities at the school level enable families to share their time and talents to support the school, teachers, and students. It matters not if volunteers are working at the school, in the classroom or in the community, they are essential to promoting parent involvement and student achievement. It’s no secret that some teachers can be territorial when it comes to letting someone into their classroom or accepting assistance from individuals not employed by the school district. Sometimes it is easier to just do everything alone or ask family or friends to help out on weekends or after school hours. What would happen however if a teacher took a  (read full article)

Article Title :: Unlocking Your Child's Potential
Did you know that raising children is perhaps the most difficult task you will ever encounter in life? It’s true. Worldwide, parents are responsible for preparing our future citizenry, and that is an awesome undertaking. We start out with these precious little bundles of joy, who trust and love unconditionally, only to discover that they turn into awkward, mouthy, know-it-alls who mature and become the human beings we all know as coworkers, friends, relatives and parents. It’s a little known fact but the person your child is today does not mirror the adult he will be tomorrow; and a lot of who he becomes lies in your hands. It is our responsibility to support our c  (read full article)

Article Title :: Protect your Child from Sexual Abuse
We generally teach girls to be passive and reward them for doing so. Girls are raised to be quiet, sweet and pretty; they are never to make a 'scene.' Boys are taught, expected and praised to be tough and self-assured, even at times when something troubles them. Whenever a person is traumatized, he/she resorts to familiar behavior; for girls this behavior usually means passivity while boys usually, 'tough it out'—thinking if they are strong and unemotional, no harm can occur.Self-protection offers a direct and effective way to empower children to help themselves. Since the perpetrator (a.k.a. sex offender) cunningly and with forethought sets the stage to perpetrate this crime in   (read full article)

Article Title :: Dad, How Do You Define Quality Time?
Fathers are not normally associated with child rearing activities and there are some things that can change that belief. It is not how much time you spend with your children but the quality of time you spend with them. It’s no surprise that with companies demanding more or parent’s time and paying less for that time, many moms and dads are becoming frustrated and guilty about no spending the kind of time they would like with their children. So what’s a dad to do? Get connected. The new wave of the future involves video-conferencing and it is proving that it can be a valuable parenting tool.Today video-conferencing is quickly becoming the extraordinary all-around effort   (read full article)

Article Title :: Parents' Secret Weapon - Audiobooks
Audio books are dearly loved by parents for understandable reasons: time constraints such as work, household duties and the like, tend to overwhelm parents when they would much rather be tucking their kids in at bedtime and telling them a story; well, children can enjoy audio books like Roald Dahl’s Fantastic Mr. Fox without the parents being present. Audio books are also a helpmeet at times when there are no harsh job demands and circumstances allow parents to spend more time at home with the family. But children can get rowdy at any time of the day or night; this is where audio books will help to calm them down—there’s just something hypnotic to a child about hearing ce  (read full article)

Article Title :: Is MySpace Stealing Your Child's Future?
It is in MySpace.com and at many other virtual hangouts, that those teens find a home for their self-expression and a way to meet other teens online. They will routinely post images and videos, showcase their accomplishments, blog their thoughts and feelings, “hook-up" and hang out with other teens, rate each other’s space, watch music videos, and download pictures, video, music, ring tones and games. This is also a place for teens to pretend they are someone else, create nasty rumors about others, discuss their drug use and sexual escapades (real or imagined), post sexually explicit videos and images, actively promote their sexual prowess, find sexual partners of all persuasion  (read full article)
