Article Title :: The Good Life II

My birth was uneventful and very tiring. I got the sense it tired mom as much as it did me. I felt very cool at first, then warm and dry after dad rubbed me all over. The lights were real low and it wasn't so different than before, but physical sensations had increased dramatically. Mom began nursing me immediately and she told me how happy she was that I was out in a new world with her and dad and how happy I would be from now on. Mom and dad sounded quite different than before and I liked the difference. I can't tell you why. They told me I would learn more patience and one day I would give the gift of a good life to others. I knew then that I wanted to do that. I could not even think o (read full article)

Article Title :: The Hardest Lesson Of All: Teaching Children About Death

How many uses can you find for a dead fox? When I happened upon one recently whilst out walking with my children, the poor lifeless creature suddenly became the catalyst for an important family moment. It was an opportunity to talk about death. You won't find 'thanatology' on the curriculum at school, yet it's the one subject that every child will have to deal with at some point. Thanatology is the little known word used to describe death education, a taboo in our society, especially when dealing with children. They learn about birth in sex education, but our final rite of passage is rarely acknowledged by either school or home.It is estimated by Winston's Wish, a charity that (read full article)

Article Title :: Parenting Beyond ABC's and 123's: Communicate, Connect, and Celebrate

When my daughter was born in 2001, the wave of "baby genius" products was in the midst of flooding the market. Baby Genius, Brainy Baby, Baby Einstein, IQ Baby –- all of these products, which claimed to develop "great minds", were flying off the shelves. Toy manufacturers had also begun placing heavy emphasis on the "brain benefits" of their products –- language, spatial reasoning, problem-solving, eye-hand coordination. As a parent and child development expert, I couldn't help but think there was a little too much emphasis on raising a "brainy baby."Toy store shelves today continue to be crammed with "smart toys." And while developmental toys are important for a child's learni (read full article)

Article Title :: 5 Principles of Parenting That Prepare Our Children for Life in the Real World

| Before I became a father, I was a son, a brother, and a nervous misguided child with no self esteem and no clue what life was all about. | Article Title :: Is it a Child? Is it an Adult? No it's an Adolescent |

I have been working with Teenagers for over 35 years. I learned my trade initially by study, which gave me an outline and which then was filled in and enhanced by the years of working directly working with them. I still find adolescents the most invigorating, challenging and often perplexing anthropogenic species that I have encountered. The following is about one area which perplexed me for some time.I have seen families where everything seems to be fine. There is plenty of love and time for the children, there are rules and boundaries, the family do exciting things together but they still manage to encourage the children to have individual interests and plenty of their (read full article)

Article Title :: Why And How Parents Should Impart Their Children With The Right Kind Of Sex Education

Many parents are confused about what they should tell their children about sex and when and how this should happen. Parents are also concerned that sexual information might heighten children’s interest in experimentation, but many studies have shown that information and education do not encourage sexual activity. On the contrary, wellinformed children make better and informed decisions regarding their sexuality, when they feel that no subjects are considered taboo at home. Some parents are concerned that their children never ask any questions of a sexual nature. Children pick up subtle cues and have probably realised that the topic makes parents feel uncomfortable and therefore steer cl (read full article)
