Article Title :: Parenting Teens: Every Word, Every Moment Counts

Our “Zen master” has taught us when parenting teens, every word, every moment counts. Years ago, we dubbed our son the “Zen master” because of the lessons his being invokes in our lives. His maturation into his teens has heightened the lessons he gifts us with as clearly, all-too-soon, he will be leaving our home. A few nights ago our “Zen master” gave me a weighty reminder of the power of words and the preciousness of each moment.Almost sixteen; our athletic, bright and busy boy was fast-forwarding summer fun as the holidays quickly waned. Thankfully, my work has allowed me time to chauffeur, prepare meals, and be there when our boy comes home before the next adventur  (read full article)

Article Title :: Whose Homework Is It?

When it comes to our children, at times it can be difficult for us as parents to step aside and let them make mistakes. In particular, it can be hard to watch over our child’s shoulder as they make mistakes on their homework. Whether we mean to or not, our overbearing and corrective tendencies can be more counterproductive then we ever intended. If you can help yourself, give your child a choice as to whether they want your help with their homework or not. And if it’s not too much, give them the option of turning in their homework without your corrections. With a little time, you may find out that your child stops resisting your well intended interest in their homework, and   (read full article)

Article Title :: How to Overcome Your Child's Lying: Three Step Lying Solution

I once received a phone call from a distraught parent, “My fourteen-year-old son lies non-stop about everything. It’s so bad that if he keeps this up, we’ve threatened to send him to boot camp!” I thought, “That must be some serious lying!” The teen had been adopted at the age of two, some early trauma was present. The father was a retired Vietnam veteran, which is typically an indicator at the very least, of exposure to a traumatic environment. Nothing significant stood out concerning the mother’s history. As well as lying, the child had been skipping class and wrestling practice; I gave the parent’s three suggestions to follow for the next two weeks:1. Make  (read full article)

Your favorite movie star just won the Oscar for “Best Actor”, considered the crowning achievement for film actors.  Article Title :: Family Van Decal Danger?

Parents love to talk about their kids. They do this in many ways. From those Christmas letters we've all come to hate to the “family” stickers on the backs of mini-vans. We love our kids!Would a parent knowingly put their child at risk? No way! But unknowingly, many parents are putting them in harm’s way. A parent’s love and desire to show off their kids are in essence increasing the chance that one or more of their children may end up the victim of a child molester, abductor and/or stalker. How can that be?Well, let’s look at the Martinique family. Mom is the proud parent of three children. She loves her kids and want  (read full article)

Article Title :: Life Skills for Teens

Picture the world at large as a vast ocean, awesome in its beauty and frightening in its power. You are the captain (or co-captain) of a family-owned ship that is traversing the waters. Within a short time, several members of the crew will leave the ship to pilot boats of their own.The ship in this metaphor is your home, the crew your family.
