 Article Title :: Parental Controls - Everyone Wants Their children to be Safe Online
Some Parental Controls allow parents to designate different levels of access for each child.To help you better understand how the various parental control software tools can be used, here are the three main categories of parental control software tools that can help your kids surf the internet safely.1. ISP restrictions.Your ISP can filter out what they consider unsuitable URL's. The problem here is selectively changing the level of restriction depending on who is surfing the internet so it's not easy. AOL have different login's to facilitate this and BT Openworld have their own gateway they you can configure. It does however work well filtering out child porno  (read full article)

 Article Title :: Frumpy Mama
Somehow it has happened. I never wanted this to happen, and I swore up and down that it never would. I vowed to be the well-dressed, sophisticated mama, with matching accessories and interesting things to say. But it happened anyway. Despite my best efforts, I’ve become a frumpy mama.Before I had my daughter, I wore interesting clothes - even a VARIETY of interesting clothes. They weren’t necessarily expensive or even name brand, but they were put together in an interesting fashion. I even wore earrings (gasp!) and sometimes bracelets. I had a diverse selection of shoes and wore them all. I was equal-opportunity shoe wearer.When I envisioned my life with a child, I saw m  (read full article)

 Article Title :: Bad Mama Blues
I’m familiar with guilt. I grew up in a pretty strict Catholic [mobile] home and was there when they doled out everyone’s share. But no one told me, and I wasn’t aware, that when I had my child, I would be handed out a whole other share of it. I guess maybe it’s something “they” don’t talk about or maybe other people don’t feel it as much because they were not raised in Nazi-regime Catholicism. Either way, I just wasn’t aware that it would be hitting me the second she shot out the chute.I remember in the beginning it was always guilt about not enjoying getting up in the night seventeen times. Or about the fact that nursing hurt and I was not the picture-perfect wo  (read full article)

 Article Title :: Surviving the Step Family
After eleven years of marriage I am a very happily married man in a "step family," or otherwise known as a blended family. But to reach this point my wife and I have had the strength of our marriage tested time after time and it still continues. From the day of our wedding, I realized just how different it is living in a stepfamily.To survive and have a successful marriage is no easy task. Stir in children from a previous marriage, ex-spouses, ex-in-laws, and the extra baggage from previous relationships and you will realize just how different the stepfamily is. Each of these ingredients can bring with it a whole set of problems themselves that need to be dealt with.Th  (read full article)

 Article Title :: Praise: Can Too Much Damage a Child's Self-Esteem?
For the purpose of this article, I’m making a distinction between praise and sincere admiration. I see praise as an attempt to manipulate another’s behavior for your own ends. When you praise someone, you are doing it because you hope that they will repeat whatever behavior came before the praise.This may be a good thing when you are training a dog (I don’t have a dog so I can’t say for sure), but I’m not sold on the idea of ‘training’ our kids with the verbal equivalent of scooby snacks. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to have to remember to carry a pocket full of praise tidbits every time I leave the house. I’d like my kids to carry their motivati  (read full article)

 Article Title :: Children's Playhouses Are Back!
"Play is to early childhood as gas is to a car." Kathy Hirsh-Pasek, Ph.D. and Roberta Michnick Golinkoff, Ph.D.Somewhere in our hectic, frenzied lifestyle, parents have come to believe that "more is more." More sports lessons, more flash cards, and earlier academic programs. We worry our children won't be able to compete in the global workplace. We feel guilty about the lack of time we spend with them. And we are faced with the constant media barrage about "how to raise a smarter/better/more capable child." But after decades of research, scientists and child development experts have come to a clear conclusion: play is the best way for children   (read full article)

 Article Title :: Tapping Your Child's Inner Motivation
This article addresses some practical questions raised by parents in response to my suggestion that praising too much is actually counter-productive while trying to motivate our children.~~ But if I’m not praising and not punishing, what do I do instead? ~~Try simply communicating your sincere admiration, gratitude, and appreciation when it arises. When your child does something admirable, let him know how you feel. “Wow! Do I count 20 towers on that sand castle?!” instead of “Good building, Johnny!” The difference is that when you admire or appreciate, you join him in his experience and there’s an alignment. When you praise, you derail his train and   (read full article)

 Article Title :: Martial Arts for Children - A Note to Parents About Motivation Problems and Child Development
I want to address a common parental concern that I continue to encounter, both in my role as a martial arts teacher, and as a fellow parent. This is in the difficulty that many parents often encounter in getting their youth student to martial arts class only to be even more confused at their child's enthusiasm when they are actually in class. "I have to fight to get them here," or "He just wants to play with his friends," are common complaints that I hear from frustrated parents.Often, these parents consider letting their son or daughter quit but then come to find that's not what the child wants. "How," they ask me, "can he want to keep training but fight me when it's time to co  (read full article)

Foster parenting is a challenging, yet rewarding job. It's a beautiful thing to give a child a home and a chance at a normal life.  Article Title :: Parenting Style: Is Your Parenting Style Reactive Or Responsive?
Do you know your parenting style? It's important to think about because the way you raise your child can affect his entire life, including his ability to have relationships with others. Basically, there are three schools of thought when it comes to raising children. In this article, I will explore all three and propose a fourth.Your parenting style is usually determined by the way your parents raised you. Although this is a hard truth for some parents to swallow, if you've ever found yourself acting just like your parents, then you know that this is true. Unless you've taken the time to think about how you want to raise your kids and what you plan to do differently, then the method  (read full article)
