Article Title :: Teenage Risky Behavior Got You Worried? Assess His Risk Factors; Learn What You Can Do
The arrival of spring brings many opportunities for high school teens to celebrate at parties, proms, and graduations. Parents want their teens to enjoy these special times, but we know that these celebrations can turn deadly in an instant. If we could wave a magic wand to keep our kids safe, we would. It isn’t that simple, but parents do have the ability to influence their teen’s behavior if they tune into potential risk factors before a problem arises.Below is a simple checklist that can help you begin to assess your teen’s likelihood to engage in risky behavior. Take a minute to read the statements and put a check next to all that are true—and be honest. The more check  (read full article)

Article Title :: When is it Okay to Argue in Front of Your Children? The Answer May Surprise You!
When is it okay to argue in front of your children? You may be surprised by the answer to this question: it’s not what you think. Believe it or not there is a right time – and more importantly, a right WAY – to argue in front of your children. Look, you are the constant model for your children about how to behave in life. How are they ever going to learn the appropriate way to negotiate and argue a point if no one ever teaches them? Here are some basic “do’s” and “don’ts” about arguing.• Be polite. Never, ever argue with the goal of hurting someone, especially in front of your children. Never call names or belittle anyone.• Be quiet. Yelling is   (read full article)

Article Title :: When Our Children Become Our Friends
Michelangelo once said that within every block of marble there is a great sculpture waiting to come out. I say the same about our children. When we receive them in the world, we don’t know what kind of beings they are and what their potential will be.Nevertheless, we act as Michelangelo, for, inside every parent, there is a sculptor of children. We know there is a great sculpture coming out; we only need to shape our marble block. We do this by teaching our children what we believe is right, by passing onto them our values, by feeding them the foods we think are the best, by providing them with the best possible education, by showing them our religious/spiritual beliefs, by direc  (read full article)

Article Title :: How to Stop Struggling with your Child about Homework
My son entered sixth grade this year, and he’s been very appropriately exploring who he is in relation to the many new freedoms and responsibilities that come with middle school. It’s new territory for me, too, and it’s not always easy to know what is his business and what is mine as the boundaries change and expand. After a pretty nasty fight over his choice of breakfast one morning, I realized that what he ate was no longer my business. (Actually, it really never was my business in the first place, but I sometimes forget that). My business is what kind of food I purchase and make available in our kitchen. His business is to select from those options, or to choo  (read full article)

Article Title :: Making the Most of After School Time
Most parents realize that the time their children spend in school is only a relatively small part of their day, and that their education extends well beyond the six or so hours they spend in the classroom. While enrolling their children in after school programs can at times seem like a program coordinator's nightmare, parents usually see after school activities as opportunities to broaden their children's horizons, and provide more specific structured activities that schools are not equipped to provide. Often after school activities also provide much needed physical activity and social interaction for children.Carefully chosen after school activities can give a child new insi  (read full article)

Article Title :: Nanny Agencies And Their Services
Our children are the most important people in our lives. When we have to work, and cannot care for them ourselves, we need to be able to trust the people we hire to take care of our precious ones. This is when you need to find the best nanny agencies. Many people struggle with the thought of a stranger taking care of their children. Parents put an ad in the paper, or ask friends for advice. But what about nanny agencies? Parents interview the prospective nanny, and ask all of the right questions, but there is still the nagging feeling that they may not be totally honest. There is no way of knowing for sure. That is when a nanny agencies can be of assistance. Nanny agencies can o  (read full article)

Article Title :: The Moral of the Story
Character, as well as the lack of character is not inherited. It is passed on from parents, siblings, teachers and friends. The main influence, if you are lucky, are your parents. In my case, it was my mother. I'm not sure how my mother got her character, but she was a wise, literate and caring mother. It may be that the Catholic school upbringing imparted to her a basic goodness, but it must have been her life struggles that lent it depth. Not only did my mother take us to movies like The Prince and the Pauper, Snake Pit, and Imitation of Life, but she sat me down with hot chocolate and cookies afterward and discussed the movie. The Prince and the Pauper was followed with questions  (read full article)

Article Title :: 4 Blocks to Building a Lifelong Relationship with Your Daughter
As with every generation, mothers and daughters share a special bond. Though one is not quite a woman and one, in many ways, is still no longer a girl – they each bear the qualities of each other. Little girls want to grow up fast, and dear sweet moms want to regain their youth. Mothers also know how important it is to be a good role model for their daughters. So, with only the best of intentions, moms and daughters travel their journeys through life. It is every mother’s hope that their daughter grow to be strong, independent, caring, and giving.  Article Title :: My Teen Is A Runaway. What Do I Do Now?
If your child is a teen runaway, there is a problem. Before you jump to the conclusion that they are just a bad kid, determine what really pushed them in this direction. As a parent, there is nothing more fearful then knowing that your child is out there, facing whatever scum walks the earth and that you can not protect them. But, before you can get them to stay home with you, you need to work with them to determine why they left in the first place. To do this, you need to do several things. First, stop accusing and leave the anger at the door. You need to have a frank but fair conversation with them. Determine why they left. Do not yell at them, punish them or demand answers.  Article Title :: Teens and Credit Cards
"Don't worry about it. I've got it this time. Next one is on you." A commonly heard statement when going out to lunch, but not so common when the words are being uttered by your 14 year old unemployed son as he whips out his credit card and places it on the lunch bill. There appears to be a rising trend in teens using their own credit/debit cards. This trend brings two questions to my mind: Is it wise to give your teen a credit card? And, is 'everyone doing it' as your teenager says? In a poll published in April, of 2005, Junior Achievement found that of the 1,065 9th through 12th graders that participated in the poll, 11 % of them had their own credit cards. The   (read full article)
