Article Title :: Simple Summer Safety Tips for Children
Summer is a fun time, but it’s also a time when a lot of accidents happen. Here are some ways to keep your children safe this summer.Water safety. If you have a pool or plan to be around the water at all, then make sure you’ve got all security devices in place. All gates must be locked, and alarms installed, especially if you have non-swimming children at home. Some general simple rules for children around any body of water are:1. No running or horseplay near the pool. 2. Kids only swim with an adult watching them. 3. Make sure your children are taking swim lessons that teach, not only the basic strokes, but also survival strokes and basic water sa  (read full article)

Article Title :: Gifted/Exceptional Children - ADD, ADHA or Indigo?
The job of raising America’s children has changed significantly through the decades. From 1946 to 1964 the largest number of children ever were born—becoming known as the Baby Boomers.During the 1950’s children were born into this world in response to the prayers of a generation of war-torn individuals searching for peace. The 1960’s gave birth to the ‘flower child’—“Make Love Not War.” Unfortunately, the world wasn’t ready for peace. The 1970’s became lost in disco in response to the ‘flower children’ going corporate. Materialism became the focus de jour—everyone wanted everything now—delayed gratification was no longer a virtue. Thus in  (read full article)

Article Title :: Share With Your Children What You Believe In the Old Fashioned Way
One of the more unusual sides to being human is how we develop philosophies and place value on belief systems above all else. If we are shown values as children, we attach ourselves to them early in life and carry them along, as a foundation for thinking, without question for a very long time.Initially, these beliefs are supposed to be passed along to children from parents, relatives, peers, teachers, clergy and books. Beliefs can be as simple as respect or as extreme as believing that you are part of a superior race or religion. They also can be purely cultural. If you grew up in Japan you learned that eating raw fish was normal, you bowed to greet people, and you always   (read full article)

Article Title :: View from Another Planet: Learning to Talk to Our Children
Our goal in conscious communication is not to change the other person . . . Our goal is to establish connection.Andrew LeCompte, author, Creating Harmonious RelationshipsA parent of three attended a workshop I gave on managing conflict. A few days after the workshop, she emailed me to say that she'd had an "opportunity" to practice when her 15-year-old daughter came home an hour after the agreed upon time. As my friend put it, "I had an opportunity last night at home...and I blew it!"A colleague, in talking about conflicts at home, once said “Our family really knows how to push our buttons – because they installed them.” I laughed because it was f  (read full article)

Article Title :: Accelerating Academic Achievement
Have you become concerned with our education system? Have you recently sat down with local teachers at coffee shops and discussed your local school district policies, efforts and educational system? Do you have children still in school?Well if you do or if you have then perhaps you have heard that the average attrition rate for new teachers is 50% in the first five years. This means that our new teachers spend years to get teaching credentials then go into teaching and quit their dreams within the first five years, if they last that long; but why? Ah ha and that is the $64 question then isn’t it?Well many teachers do not believe that they went through all that education to  (read full article)

Article Title :: Paternity Leave: Why Aren’t Men Taking It?
In 1993, the federal Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) granted American men and women up to 12 weeks of unpaid time off from their jobs for the birth or adoption of a child. This period of time off is generally known as family leave or parental leave. For women, it is commonly called maternity leave; for men, it may be referred to as paternity leave. To be eligible for parental leave under the FMLA, a person has to work for a federal, state, or local public agency or an organization that has 50 or more employees working within a 75-mile radius. He or she must have worked for the organization for at least 12 months and for at least 1,250 hours  (read full article)

Article Title :: Teacher Appreciation Letter
The following is a letter I wrote to our school district in appreciation of one of our daughter's teachers. Take a moment to think of a teacher who has made a difference in your child's life, and write a letter. Tell your school district how you feel. Help change our society's attitudes toward childhood education, one letter at a time.Dear (principal),Several weeks ago I had the opportunity to chaperone Hanford Middle School students at the Mid-Columbia Science Fair, and I couldn't help but notice how well represented Hanford Middle School was at this exciting all-day event. It was hard not to notice that Hanford was one of the only Tri-City middle schools that par  (read full article)

Article Title :: Let Them Have Their Temper Tantrums!!
Children between the ages of one and seven are open to emotional hurts. Temper tantrums are a way a young child expresses his frustration over a situation or a person. When your child feels thwarted, he feels many mixed emotions. Usually temper tantrums are brought about by stress. This stress is anything that disrupts the normal balance of the body. There are two types of stressors: the physical and the psychological. These stressors cause your child to feel a sense of anxiety, confusion, frustration, sadness, and anger. When a child feels out of control and not in balance, your child will react with a temper tantrum, whining, or teasing to get their way. This is a part of livin  (read full article)

Article Title :: Parents - Tune In To Time Out
Most parents in America know what “time out” means. It’s simply an effective tool parents use to encourage their misbehaving child to learn to behave. It is a teaching technique. It isn’t a punishment, but rather a way for your child to control their own behavior. Time-out gives both of you time to calm down. It is a practice that allows you to react effectively without anger and distress. Since your child will test your limits often, time-out is a preventive measure that stops your child from pushing your hot buttons. Parents discover that over time, if they are consistent, with no giving in, time-out really works and it works without scolding or threatening your child.  (read full article)

Article Title :: What Can Autistic Parents do to Make a Difference for their Children?
Over the past week or so I have been talking with parents of autistic children and many are fairly stressed out. And there seems to be a common theme amongst some of the more vocal parents over the support they are getting from their local school district. It is widely known that one-on-one help for autistic children is indeed the very best thing to help them learn and educate them. Of course there is no way that the school districts can pay for this, as the classroom sizes in America are from 20-30 kids now and if a school district has 150 total Autistic Children that additional cost could bankrupt the district.Indeed there is no reason Autistic Parents cannot get up every d  (read full article)
