Article Title :: Raising Up A Woman: My Daughter, My Heritage

From her highchair, she gazes at me with admiration. Enchanting brown eyes follow me as I bustle about cleaning the handful of Honey Nut O’s she’s tossed on the floor. She’s a year old, gorgeous and her daddy’s joy, and she’s smiling so sweetly; at her tender age she’s already taking in tidbits of information that will shape her into the woman she will eventually become. I can't help but think of the position I'm in. I have a huge responsibility to her. By my example, my daughter, Alysia, will learn to respect herself and value her mind, body and spirit. Through my actions, I'll teach her to make sensible choices. I'll advise her that people  (read full article)

Article Title :: Teens and Alcohol

It's the standard at every weekend party: a case of beer, a keg, many hard liquor bottles and mixed drinks. Alcohol is everywhere these days, and teens (as well as adults) can't keep their hands off it. Teens are getting drunk just about every weekend during the school year, and even more during the summer. But why do teens insist on drinking? Is it peer pressure? Is it the thrill of doing something illegal? Do they think it will make them cooler in the eyes of others? Most likely, it's one (or more) of these reasons. Teens are easily pressured into things. Almost all of them want to be accepted, and are willing to do just about anything to gain acceptance. Even the smartest stu  (read full article)

Article Title :: ADHD, Apnea and Tonsils?

Are some kids with ADHD having sleep problems due to their tonsils being enlarged? Does this issue cause them to not receive the proper sleep they need and thus cause issues with ADHD?Sounds kind of far fetched perhaps, yet a recent study suggests all this could in fact be related and thus it became a topic of conversation in an online think tank as one member, Swift from Las Vegas stated;“There is also another study that is looking at kids with ADHD and a lot of them also have enlarged tonsils and the sleep disorders related to being unable to breathe without snoring at night--apnea even.A year after these kids have surgery both their sleep and concentration are si  (read full article)

Article Title :: Raising Children Who Love to Read

If you’re wondering why some children grow up to become successful readers and possess a love for reading, the answer is simple. Their parents have made a commitment to their reading development.Children can begin a journey to reading success and enjoyment when parents commit to:- reading to children as young as six months old. Begin reading when they are barely sitting up and their eyes are beginning to focus. Select simple, colorful board books and read them aloud with expression. Point to pictures, identify characters or animals and talk about the story.- a schedule for reading aloud until children are independent readers. Modeling good reading allows children   (read full article)

Article Title :: Parenting: Top Speaker Notes One Reason "Mad Dads" Overreact At Their Kids' Ballgames

Why do men seem to get uncorked and do all kinds of strange things at their children’s ballgames? There is the loud type who feels he has to bark directions at his Little Leaguer as the boy or girl is at the plate. And there is the even more aggressive type who is compelled to argue with soccer and basketball referees. Finally, there is the guy that goes completely overboard, picking fights with fellow parents, umpires, and even league officials, when they’re around. What do these behaviors have in common and why do they come out during athletic competitions and not when their kids are singing in the glee club?I believe it all boils down to emotion. Men   (read full article)

Article Title :: Are You In Control Of Your Children Or Are You Just A Controlling Parent?

When it comes to our children we do need to be the ones in control. We are responsible for their safety and well being of course. But we are also the ones that need to teach them independence, good decision making skills, and build their self esteem at the same time. Learn to pick your battles and your whole family will run smoother and everyone will be much happier. First off does it really matter if your child wears red striped pants with a blue polka dotted shirt? If we are going to church or somewhere special then yes I would prefer that my daughter at least somewhat match, but if we are at home or just running to the store I let her pick her own clothes as long as they are   (read full article)

Article Title :: Getting Your Kids Out the Door - With Their Shoes!

If you’ve got children like mine, getting them out the door—on time and with all their belongings, especially their shoes—can be a daily challenge. My kids are visual-spatial. They’ve got a wonderful sense of space and direction; they’re the kids who can tell you exactly where within that five-level, very dark parking garage you’ve parked your car. But when it comes to any sense of time, forget it! So, it seems we’re always running late. Running late equates to leaving without everything they need, probably nine times out of ten! After an extensive run of homeschooling, my youngest son, Matt, returned to a very carefully chosen private school for the gifted that ju  (read full article)

Article Title :: Journaling for Kids

My journal is a confidante, a creativity tool, and a way of finding clarity like no other. So, as soon as my children were old enough to grip a crayon, I have been encouraging to keep their own personal journals.>> How does journaling benefit a child?Children reap the same benefits in keeping a personal journal as do adults. At all ages, there are just certain times when life feels fuzzy, and we know it’s time to get out our journal and write until things make more sense. Gaining clarity in this way can help us sort things out and determine when we need to talk things out with someone – and what precisely our needs are. In this way, journals serve as a remarkable  (read full article)

Article Title :: Your Parents Lied to You and Well You Believed Them

Your parents told you if you work hard, try your best and do the right thing that you will be successful. Your parents told you to follow the word and to obey the law. Your parents and teachers told you about history. Your parents told you that the government will protect you and they are there to help us all. Guess what, everyone lied to you.Sure you should do the right thing, work hard and such, but that is no guarantee of any positive outcome or success. In fact the more successful you are the more you find folks willing to cheat to get at what you have earned. The fact is the world is not fair and you have to stick to your guns, but be pleasant. Trusting anyone, whether i  (read full article)

Article Title :: What is a Secret

As parents we have so much to worry about in regards to our children. We want to protect them from all of lifes dangers, yet we want to accomplish this without putting unnecessary fear into their lives. When my children were small, we began talking about secrets. What is a good secret and what is a bad secret? This seemed to be a concept my children could understand, while accomplishing my goal of not scaring them. Good secrets are things that you get to tell mommy or daddy. Such as we bought daddy a birthday gift. Today it's a secret but tomorrow we get to tell daddy. Another good secret is when the principal at school tells you there will be a party for your teach  (read full article)
