 Article Title :: Math or Magic?

Math or Magic? by: Kenneth Williams As someone once said: "There's an easy way to do something, and an unlimited number of difficult ways". Take simple division, for example: Suppose you need to divide 43 by 9. The answer is 4 (the first figure of 43) and the remainder is 7 (4 + 3). Similarly 35 divided by 9 is 3 remainder 8. In the Vedic system we use the natural properties of numbers. The number 9 has the property that it is 1 below 10. So every 10 contains one 9 and one remainder. Therefore, in 40, there will be 4 nines and 4 remainder. and so in 43 there must be 4 nines and 7 remainder. This can be developed in many ways. For example to divide 123 by 9 the answer is 13 rema  (read full article)

 Article Title :: How To Potty Train In Two Days

How To Potty Train In Two Days by: Carrie Lauth Ah, potty training! Go to a local bookseller and you will find dozens of books on the subject. Search the Net and there are thousands of websites with information on how to do it stress free. There are even people who are capitalizing on a parent's frustration with potty training by offering to do it for you, for a hefty sum! I honestly can't imagine anything more unseemly than paying someone to teach my child to "go". Ewwww!!! I have successfully potty trained two out of 3 kids so far, baby number 3 is only 14 months so she is off the hook for a few months at least ;) I seem to be the envy of the playgroups when other Moms see that my   (read full article)

 Article Title :: Teaching Children Good Manners

Teaching Children Good Manners by: Rexanne Mancini Last week in my newsletter, I mentioned that my children knew how to behave in nice restaurants because they had been exposed to the atmosphere at an early age. My idea of well behaved might be different from yours, however, I think there are certain basics that are important and universal. When my daughters were babies, we would take them wherever we went. If they began to fuss or cry, one of us would promptly remove them from the room/restaurant/market/wherever. Not because we felt their crying or fussing was a bad thing. No, it's a perfectly normal occurrence for infants and toddlers. We removed them as a courtesy to others who we fe  (read full article)

 Article Title :: Remember The "Generation Gap"?

Remember The "Generation Gap"? by: Douglas G. Burkland The techniques of managing relationships between parents and their children is as old as.. well, parents having children. It's not an easy job, either for the parent or the child. But, the key to any relationship inside or outside the family is the ability to relate; to have an empathy that allows us a slightly special way in which we can communicate with one another in order to understand, and to be understood. We make friends because of the similarities we may have in certain areas and we sometimes can build lifelong relationships on that basis. But, having children means we do not have a choice to make that relationship as we mig  (read full article)

 Article Title :: New Mom...New Baby...New Debt??

New Mom...New Baby...New Debt?? by: Susan Koiner Ah, there is nothing like being an expectant mom. Along with your expanding waistline comes the ever growing list of products for you and your new bundle of joy. Preparing for a new baby can be a costly experience, especially in the areas of clothing and nursery furniture. The good news is that it does not have to be! Let’s talk about buying baby clothes...think RESALE! Every new mom gushes over the adorable clothing available for babies, but they often come with a not so adorable price. Resale clothing costs a fraction of the retail price. Buying resale clothing does not equal buying trash! Moms sell their baby’s clothing to r  (read full article)

 Article Title :: His Toy, Her Toy

His Toy, Her Toy by: Jennifer Gove I remember when my daughter was born. Visions of her and I dressed in pinks and purples sitting in her lacy pink room playing dolls danced threw my head. A year later my son was born ;My husbands vision of sports and trucks revved around like mad men threw his manly mind. Those dreams were simply that dreams. Little did I know there are lessons for parents to learn about children’s toys and who are children will be. My daughter plays with dolls. She plays with clay and gets her hands dirty. She plays in the dirt, climbs trees and races her trucks around .,he plays kick ball , base ball and can run as fast as any boy. My son plays with trucks and buil  (read full article)

 Article Title :: Mutants or Clones?

Mutants or Clones? by: Jeffrey D. Murrah, LPC In a single dose of children's television, I was bombarded with themes of mutants, cyborgs, evolving and the digital world. These words intimidated me at first, until I learned what the shows were talking about. I wondered how this prepares children for living in the 21st century. The answer hit me when I came across the saying, "Don't Clone...Mutate." For those not familiar with the new language, a few definitions are in order. A clone is an exact replica of the original source. Clones are trained to mindlessly conform. Success and failure are based on how well the clone conforms rather than on the clone's accomplishments and abilities. A m  (read full article)

 Article Title :: Breaking the Cycle of Emotional Blackmail

Breaking the Cycle of Emotional Blackmail by: Jeffrey D. Murrah, LPC Family decision-making is an intriguing phenomenon. Many factors become part of the decision-making process. Emotions play an important part in this activity. Parents and children each use emotions to steer decisions favorable way to themselves. Using emotions to influence decisions develops naturally. The use of emotions becomes harmful when they are used as threats to control or intimidate others. Emotionally charged threats and intimidation leaves their victims feeling helpless. Victims of emotional blackmail often give in, believing they have no other options. Emotional blackmail occurs across ages. Parents  (read full article)

 Article Title :: Children are People, Not Machines

Children are People, Not Machines by: Jeffrey D. Murrah, LPC When growing up, my father frequently reminded me to "pay attention to the details." That saying became very real to me in the area of parenting. While raising children, the details make great differences in development. Being that children are people and not machines, the kind of detailing needed is different. Focusing on the externals of name brand clothing, perfect hair and having the most extensive collection of expensive toys are not the kind of attention needed. Such efforts will result in the child feeling rejected and learning to substitute material objects and appearances for love. Children need the attention  (read full article)

 Article Title :: Saving Money on Preschool: Readiness Skills Needed

Saving Money on Preschool: Readiness Skills Needed for Kindergarten by: Michelle Jones As a mom of 4 who's youngest child is about to start Kindergarten this Fall, I'd like to share with you some things I've learned about Preschool over the last ten years, along with a list of readiness skills every child can be learning at home - whether attending Preschool or not. Preschools, especially those taught in a church environment, are a wonderful resource that help prepare children for regular school. Not to mention they also provide social interaction with children of the same age, and for a few hours each week, a much-needed break for Mom. Overall, we highly recommend them! There's   (read full article)
