Grandparents! Help Your Grandkids Do Math!
by: Kenneth Williams
This may come as a surprise.
But despite all the advances in education, many kids still struggle in the math class.
Math is an important subject, yet many kids just don't "get it".
Teachers can only devote a limited amount of personal attention to each student.

Grandparents teach their grandchildren through example and play a role in encouraging them to be successful and set goals.
Grandparents are naturally forgiving and patient, and children sense th (read full article) |

I Just Love It!
by: Kristin Johnson
You know the scenario. You're sitting at the family Christmas gathering and your ten-year-old opens one of Aunt Martha's itchy homemade sweaters. Or Uncle Bobby, who's been swearing to lose twenty pounds for years, opens an exercise cycle. Of course, if Uncle Bobby follows the politeness rule, he'll say, "Thank you, it's just what I wanted." (Then he'll conveniently "forget" about it in the basement or storage closet.) your ten-year-old may not be as skilled at pretending as Uncle Bobby, but kids know enough to know that any answer other than "Thank you, Aunt Martha, I love it" will raise the roof.
There's nothing wrong with pretending you like a g (read full article) |

Authoritarian Parenting, Permissive Parenting, or Loving Parenting
by: Margaret Paul, Ph.D.
Angie was brought up by rigid, authoritarian parents who kept her on a tight leash. They rarely considered her feelings about anything, showing a complete lack of empathy and compassion for her feelings and desires. If she came home five minutes late from school or from an activity, she was punished. Yelling and hitting were their favorite forms of punishment.
Angie was a good girl. She did well in school and did what she was told, but was often sad and lonely and never felt important. When she married and had her own children, she knew that she didn’t want to treat her children the way she h (read full article) |

The Shoemaker and the Brat
by: Patricia Gatto
At seventeen years old, I was a brat. A mixture of innocence, immaturity and righteousness. And I carried that attitude with me everywhere, including my trip to the shoemaker.
Now, to understand why something as simple as a trip to the shoemaker would stay with me all these years later, I have to explain. I came from the most loving and nurturing parents a child could ever want. Even back then, I knew I was blessed with a wonderful family, but this realization also made me a little arrogant. My fierce devotion to family could be blinding at times.
When my dad asked me to pick up his shoes from the shoemaker, I eagerly obliged. Although he (read full article) |
