Article Title :: Parents — The No Child Left Behind Law Won't Do Much For Your Child

Past experience with federal education programs predicts that the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) act will also fail parents whose children are doing poorly in school. The federal government has spent over $120 billion on Title 1 programs for low-income students since 1965. Yet the literacy rates for these children today are appalling, and the achievement gap between low-income children and their peers has not closed. If the U.S. Department of Education wants to give real choice to parents, they should not be tinkering with a failed government-controlled school system that, by its very nature, strangles free choice and competition.Americans have been blessed with a system that gi  (read full article)

Article Title :: Homeschooling — Can I Do It?

Many parents would like to homeschool their children but are afraid they don’t have the training or ability to be their children’s teacher. This is certainly understandable, because most parents never had any formal training to be a teacher. However, most parents don’t have to worry about this issue. There is literally a supermarket of education resources available for parents to choose from to help them homeschool their children. These include low-cost Internet private schools that take most of the homeschooling burden off parents’ backs. There are also hundreds of low-cost instruction books on how to teach your child reading, math, and many other subjects. These are   (read full article)

Article Title :: Homeschooling — Is It Worth It?

Suppose that you rearrange your life to homeschool your child and the experiment fails? You may feel that you’ve disrupted your life and wasted a year of your child’s time. Your child may even be kept back a grade by the local public school. The answer to this concern is, can you risk not trying? Isn’t your child’s future worth the risk? If you see that your child is getting a bad education in public school, the worst thing to do is nothing. Then there is no chance of improvement. If you leave your children in public school, chances are good that their ability to read, self-esteem, and love of learning may be damaged, and they can waste twelve years of their lives. Look at t  (read full article)

Article Title :: Water Hazards For Young Children

Unfortunately each year many young children drown in swimming pools, other bodies of water, and standing water around the home area. Children must be watched by an adult at all times when in or near water. Children are very inquisitive and love to get themselves into trouble. They love to get there little frail bodies into buckets, bathtubs and such items. Did you know children may drown in an inch or 2 of water!Always keep buckets and pails, especially 3 to 5-gallon buckets and diaper pails away from toddlers. Toilets are not just a favorite for dogs. Keep children away as they can drown in the bowl. Do you have fish? Make sure aquariums are placed high and above the reach of chil  (read full article)

Article Title :: How Do I Get My Child to Read?

Well first off, please to don’t institute the ½ hour of mandatory reading that so many schools and parents are so keen on these days. You want to encourage a life-long love of reading and frankly you would be much more likely to succeed by banning reading in your house then by turning reading into yet another chore that needs to be done. Secondly, you want to make sure that your child doesn’t have some learning disability that makes reading hard and uncomfortable. Even a child who makes good grades can have some undetected condition that makes reading difficult. Check with your child’s teacher and/or have him tested if necessary. If there is a learning disability  (read full article)

Article Title :: Strategies to Help Boost Your Child's Self Esteem

Self esteem in an important quality for all children to have. As parents, you can help to boost your child's self esteem by following the steps below:Model good self-esteem: Express through your actions and words that you respect yourself. Children are wonderful at imitating what they see and hear.  Article Title :: Parenting Your Teenager: How to Say NO!

Q: Whenever we tell my daughter "no," she just bugs and pesters until we give in. I know it's wrong to give in, but she makes things so unpleasant that we give in just to make peace. How can we turn this situation around?A: You have a problem. Your daughter knows that your nos are not to be taken seriously. When you say "no" and then give in to the inevitable hassling and begging that follows, you teach your daughter that "no" does not mean "no."She has learned that no really means"I just haven't bugged and hassled and manipulated and pressured my parents enough to get to yes, so I now need to do more."And every child I have ever known is more than up to that t  (read full article)

Article Title :: Nanny 911 and Disciplining Your Child

Nanny 911 Interview with Montel WilliamsI saw an interview with Nanny 911 with Montel Williams and I have to say I was really impressed. One of the clips that was shown was Nanny 911 going into a home with 3 or 4 boys. The mother, father and boys were out of control. The boys ranged in age, I think the one that was the most trouble was about 9 or 10 years old. There was a lot of cursing and yelling between the whole family, especially the mother. The father had a home that was electrically dangerous. The father was sleeping on the couch and the boys were sleeping in the room with their mother because the other rooms were a mess and not finished. I guess the father was b  (read full article)

Article Title :: Pick Your Fights With Your Teenager Wisely

I know as a single parent or even with 2 parents, it is hard raising a teenage girl or a boy.I noticed throughout my son's teenage life, his emotions were different than mine. There is a difference between girls and boy. The book that came out I think in the 1980's - Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus really made sense. If you haven't read that book, you could get the book or tapes and just get an idea of how we are different. For me, I don't fight very often with my son. He is more mellow than I am. What we do argue about is cleaning. He just hates cleaning but I don't like it either. Who does? So what I try to do is talk with him the day before to let him know what   (read full article)

Article Title :: Child Discipline - Be Consistent With Your Child

The biggest complaint you hear from parents about their children is "they don't listen to me and I have tried everything"Then when you start talking, you find out that parents give in at the end because it is just too exhausting to be consistent. For example--you want your child to go to bed at a certain time. Instead of sticking to that time and being consistent, your child starts begging or screaming or taking a fit to stay up later and you give in. What you need to do is just stick to the time for a short while and your child will adapt after 4 or 5 times.I have an example again today from someone who has a 14 year old teenage girl. She lost her cell phone, and they  (read full article)
