How To Get To Know A Disabled Person
by: Stephen Michael Kerr
When you first meet someone who is blind, deaf, or in a wheelchair, what is your initial reaction? Curiosity? Sympathy? Awkwardness? If you experience any of these emotions, you are not alone. Chances are you don't regularly associate with someone who is disabled, so these feelings are quite common.
Having been blind since birth, I have encountered a wide range of reactions, from curious stares when i walk down the street with a cane or holding someone's arm, to amazement at being able to feed and dress myself. Most people don't intend to be rude or insensitive, but just aren't sure what to expect. Here are four po (read full article) |

Genes and Work Ethic
by: Tony Papajohn
If you have good genes, you are blessed. If they are exceptional, you might be successful on that alone.
Add work ethic and you will be successful and remarkable.
On Thursday, Sept. 9, 2004, Linda Green retired after 23 years as a dancer in “Jubilee!” the longest-running production of its kind in Las Vegas.
At 51, Green was the oldest continually working showgirl.
A local columnist dubbed her the “Cal Ripkin Jr. of showgirls,” after baseball’s record holder for most consecutive games played.
In certain respects, her achievement is more remarkable.
In her profession, where a 15-year career is unusual, Green has auditioned eve (read full article) |

Creativity and Broken Eggs
by: Tony Papajohn
In 1420, the dignitaries of Florence held a competition.
They offered the enormous prize of 200 gold florins to the architect whose genius could span the unfinished dome of the Florence Cathedral.
This was a great challenge. Even the original builders of the cathedral in 1296 left writings hoping that God would offer a solution because they did not have one.
Filippo Brunelleschi was the answer to their prayers.
He proposed the radical idea of a dome supported by a brick vaulting system that balanced the opposing forces, but without the customary central supports.
The experts called him mad.
Brunelleschi sought to demonstrate his (read full article) |

My best friend, Ryan, told me last night he got his girlfriend, Rebecca, pregnant. He is 22 and she is 20. He told me he was probably going to marry her "because that is what I should do." Let me give you a little background.
Ryan knew this girl back in high school and met up with her again four months ago. She had just gotten out of a year-long relationship a week before. Despite that fact, they promptly started sleeping together. Within a month they had a pregnancy scare because she refused to use any form of birth control. She said it "messed with her system."
And he believed he (read full article) |

The 10 Questions to Ask Yourself If You Haven’t Reached a Dream
by: Carol Dickson-Carr
Following are a series of questions I needed to ask myself and find answers to over the course of my life before finally deciding to go for it. It wouldn’t surprise me one bit if any of these looked familiar to you. You’ll notice that many of the questions and my proposed solutions are interrelated.
1. What am I really afraid of?
Addressing this issue right here is worth of an article all by itself! You may have heard somewhere that FEAR really stands for False Evidence Appearing Real. However, some fears are needed and rational. You wouldn’t stick your hand in a burning fire pl (read full article) |

Two Choices That can Make Next Year The Best Year of Your Life
by: Margaret Paul, Ph.D.
What if there were just two choices you could make to insure that next year would be wonderful? There actually are, and these choices are quite simple in concept, yet not easy to do. They are not things you do on the outside, such as exercising your body (which is always a good thing to do!) but ways of thinking and being on the inside. These have to do with your attitude and your intent.
GRATITUDE
I’m sure you’ve all heard of the “attitude of gratitude.” Studies show that the happiest and most successful people in the world are those who consistently live their lives with an (read full article) |

Want to Learn Something New Today?
by: Steve MacLellan
How many times do you say, "Gee, I wish I had of learned...?" How often do you avoid new tasks simply because they are out of your "comfort zone" and the task would involve having to learn something new?
I realized how slow we, as adults, resist learning. I've often heard it said that as we get older, our thought processes slow down and it isn't as easy for us to learn. Is this true? Or is it simply we don't want to learn?
When my daughter Kelsey was four years old I was watching her one day, I noted some differences between children and adults. The fact is, I was getting prepared to scold her, when it occurred to me that I sh (read full article) |

Direct Answers - Column for the week of October 7, 2002
In the first half of May, I went through two remarkable changes. One was physical and the other involved emotional recall.
The physical one was what I thought was flu and a heavy dose of it. It was accompanied by a surreal shivering never experienced before or since. The recall was of a family I knew in my school days more than 20 years ago.
I imagined them not during the school years, when I knew them, but much earlier. I got images of all three children as handsome creatures having just come into this world. I saw the hospital, their home, and so forth. It was incredible.

Helping Happiness Along
by: Tony Papajohn
Happiness is worth helping along.
The benefits of being a happy person are huge. We live longer, live healthier, and live more lively lives.
Unfortunately, all but the most highly-evolved among us have our less-than-happy moments.
Fortunately, we can do simple things to recapture a happy mood if we find ourselves lacking one.
I found an article that starts, "Everyone wants to be happy, but happiness is more than pasting a smile on your face."
True, but that is a great start.
Pasting a smile on your face, even if forced, gets the happiness engine started. If you are from the North, a forced smile is like a jump start on a frigid morning. (read full article) |

A Field of Multiple Opportunity
by: Tony Papajohn
Opportunity is all around us and has many facets, but it’s not always obvious.
It hides behind the same appearance that everyone else sees, but it reveals itself depending on who you are.
Even though everyone sees the same appearance, different people recognize different aspects of opportunity.
What you see depends on the vision with which you start.
Consider a farmer’s field.
Sam Walton had his own vision regarding fields.
The founder of Wal-Mart needed to open stores and lots of them.
His discounting philosophy meant that he needed to drive costs down, cut profit margins to the bone, and generate huge volume.
He did this b (read full article) |
