A Plan Of Attack
by: Wayne and Tamara
Direct Answers - Column for the week of October 28, 2002

The principal gave a huge lecture to teachers about overloading, looking out for each other, and making sure family life has priority. I felt better. (read full article) |

Happiness and Work: Your Life Depends On It.
by: Craig Nathanson
Early one morning, Robert awoke, made his wife of 41 years some banana bread, took out the garbage and called to cancel a doctors appointment scheduled for the next day. He wrote a note to remind his wife to pick up the dry cleaning. All things considered, it seemed like a normal day.
Robert had “retired” four years earlier after nearly 40 years doing what he loved in the banking industry. After retirement, his life took a challenging turn.
While he remained friendly and encouraging to others on the outside, on the inside he was suffering a deepening depression. After retirement, Robert couldn’t find anything to (read full article) |

Why Positive Thinking Doesn't Work
by: Julie Plenty
There was someone I used to work with who, well aware of their tendency to look at the negative side of things, used to constantly tell themselves to "think more positively".
This was said with such a feeling of desperation that I just knew that not only would they NOT think positively, they would probably go even further into negative thinking. The mere fact that they kept pushing themselves to "think positively" was a sign that this would ultimately be counterproductive.
So many of us have interpreted the desire to be positive thinkers in a very narrow and ultimately ineffective way. The push to be positive often results in igno (read full article) |

Are you a Sleep Walking Zombie?
by: Royane Real
Do you get enough sleep? Chances are you don’t. Many people living in modern industrial societies suffer from a chronic, and worsening sleep deficit.
Until a few decades ago, most people lived lives so very different from ours that we would scarcely recognize them. Until fairly recently in human history the majority of people lived in small villages or on farms, not in big cities. There were no electric lights. There weren’t any faxes or e-mails. There was no Internet, and no television. Once the sun went down, most of the day’s activities came to an end.
People worked very hard physically, and only a very small minority h (read full article) |

How Empathy Can Reduce Your Anger

Jim, a 42-year old engineer was teaching his eight-year-old son how to fly a radio-controlled airplane. As the airplane was taking off, Jim instructed his son to push the control stick on the radio to the right. He did and the airplane turned to the right.
This was repeated several more times until the airplane turned full circle toward the son, ready to land. “Push the stick to the right,” said Jim. This time, however, the plane turned left. “Push the stick left,” Jim said. Now the plane turned right, as if it suddenly had a mind of its own.
“I’m confused,” said the son. “How do I know which way to push the stick w (read full article) |
