World-Class Athlete: Do You Have What It Takes?
by: Leah Lauber
The following excerpt comes from the book, Soccer Dreams, (a top-seller in sports journalism at Amazon) which describes Leah Lauber’s true adventure following the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team, as a fan and 12-year old Junior Reporter during the history-making 1999 Women’s World Cup. While the article is now dated and was written primarily for children, the lesson itself is timeless in describing what it takes to be a world-class athlete.
Do you have what it takes to be a world-class athlete? Do you know what it takes? Well, if you don't know, keep reading!

Lucky Hat
by: Marshall Estes
Do you have a lucky hat?
It was a beautiful warm day in the mid 70's. Typical of what we get in Colorado during September. I started out by checking the stream flows on the stream flows page at fly-fishing-colorado.com. The South Platte below Cheesman Dam was just perfect running 250 CFS. The water should be clear and not too much moss yet.
I was fishing the bridge pool where CO 67 and a Jeffco Highway come together. The water was crystal clear. The pool had just enough moss in it to offer fish protection and challenging fishing for the fisherman. After two hours, I had only had a couple of strikes but could not get hooked up.
So I headed to the car f (read full article) |

Hello again, everybody, and welcome to the negotiating table, I’m the straight-shooting Zig Zaggner, telling it like it is…direct to your cranium.
Today, we’re talking hot dogs. Weiner Corp International has finally consented to re-opening negotiations with the Union of Processed Meat Employees after 12 hours of stalled talks, and credit for all this is being given to one Gus Simpson.
Gus, what’s your part in all this?
I, uh, like hot dogs, Zig.
And?
And, well, that’s it (read full article) |

Ready, Steady, Crocked
by: Brian Mantel
The motorway was hell, your dinner was in the dog, but by some superhuman effort involving changing in a telephone booth, you just about made it to the sports centre on time. You’ve had a bad day, you want to hit something, but you couldn’t find the traffic warden, so it will have to be a shuttle. And now…you’re raring to go.
You strip off the tracksuit, select your favourite racquet (hopefully a Prince) and step onto court for a ‘knock’ – just to warm you up. Jim whacks one up and you, forgetting that you're not playing for the Town Hall clock, in fact not even playing, leap backwards and hit a clear, exercising a perfect scissor (read full article) |

The Service in Here is Terrible!
by: Brian Mantel
Mea Culpa
Dear Reader (I assume the singular and hope for the plural) I have completely re-written this article in the light of comments from my coaching muse, Roger Mills. Roger feels that there were too many ‘negatives’ in the original. The principle here is ‘tell them what to do rather than what not to do.’ I apologise for the negative in that sentence; that will be the last one. Henceforth I will not be so negative. Damn. I mean, ‘henceforth I will be more positive’.
I also apologise to Roger for the fact that the postman got him out of bed, demanding money with menaces, because the copy of the article I sent him was (read full article) |

The Wet Fly Swing
by: Cameron Larsen
The wet fly swing sounds like something one does at the square dance hall. Instead the wet fly swing is one of the oldest fly fishing techniques. It is used for all types of fish, where ever there is a current. Winter steelhead, salmon, big trout in big rivers, and even striped bass, are all prey that often require the use of the’ wet-fly swing’.
When to use it
The wet fly swing is designed to get the fly down deep quickly and swing it in front of the desired fish. Trout anglers use it when fish are holding deep, and not rising for any particular hatch. Winter steelheaders use it when steelhead loathe to move in the cold water and sit in betw (read full article) |

What A Load Of Golf Balls
by: Clay Morris
Through out the history of golf the golf ball has evolved more than any other piece of equipment used in the game. From the very first wooden balls followed by the feathery to the latest 4 piece, high energy core, tungsten weighted, titanium, super thin covered, go further go straighter last forever golf ball, advances in science and the materials used in manufacturing has taken that little white thing to a new level of performance.
At the moment in my shop I have 36 different balls to choose from and there are plenty more types I could stock. This being the case it is difficult for a golfer to choose which is the right ball for them especial (read full article) |

Golf Swing Mechanics Can Be Improved Very Quickly
by: Mike Pedersen
If you’re like most golfers, you’re always trying to duplicate that “perfect” golf swing. I know I am. Doesn’t it feel great to hit that effortless shot? Don’t you wish you could do it every time? That would be a similar feeling of what the pro’s have most of the time. It would be such a high!
So what’s keeping you from this goal? Do you think you just need to hit more balls? Or, are you already hitting hundreds every week? If that’s not working, do you need more golf lessons? Or, have you taken lessons but not seen improvement?
If it’s none of the above, then what?
I can tell you almost (read full article) |

I Didn't Know These Are Slowly Destroying My Scrapbooks!
by: Palyn Peterson
Once you spend your precious time and energy creating a scrapbook, make sure it lasts! There are a few simple things you can easily do to ensure that your scrapbooks look just as good as the day you finished them, for years to come.
The first thing to avoid is paper that is not lignin-free. You've probably heard that before, and it is true, but what is lignin anyways? Lignin is a stiff component of a plant that quite literally holds it together. Although lignin is necessary for plants and trees, you want nothing to do with it! After a while, lignin will cause photos, fabrics and other paper that touch it (read full article) |

Sailing Hints & Tips
by: Yannis Moraitis
I spend almost all my summers sailing around the Greek islands. With this small article I would like to share some sailing hints with you that will help you enjoy the most out of your sailing holidays.
- When moored or anchored, use your sun tent and stay under it most of the time. Our friend, the Sun, sometimes can be dangerous, especially during summertime.
- Be cautious on board and if possible, always wear a pair of soft boat shoes. This way you will protect your feet and the deck surface. When sailing, avoid walking on deck without particular reason and in rough weather, remember to use your life belt.
- If you have children on board, (read full article) |
