|
Backpacking Basics!Backpacking is perhaps the greatest get-away possible to man! Backpackers leave behind most ties to civilization and take nothing with them but what can be carried on their back! Backpacking the miles of wilderness around you can be an exhilarating experience. Whether the trail leads up through high mountain forests, or along a shore, or even the desert, backpacking brings us close to nature like nothing else can. As with any outdoor activity, planning is essential to a good backpacking experience. While nature is astoundingly beautiful, it is also hazardous, and being prepared is a must. | Article Title :: Backpacking Clothes - Make Your Own |

Okay, do you really want to make all your own backpacking clothes? More power to you, and good luck. After the first hundred tedious hours of sewing I started buying gear again. However, there are SOME backpacking clothes you can make cheaply and quickly. A few examples follow.Making Your Own Ski MaskFind any old thermal underwear top or bottom, preferably made of polypropylene. Cut off a sleeve or leg, pull it over your head, and mark where your eyes and mouth are with a pen or marker. Cut the holes and cut off the extra. You just made a balaclava.My homemade balaclava weighs less than an ounce. Sew the top shut if you want, or just pin it shut with a safety p (read full article)

Article Title :: Backpacking Food - What To Pack

Weight is always a concern with backpacking food you'll be carrying everything on your back. Some will tell you to find your weight savings in other areas, and argue for the necessity of healthy, meaning heavy, food. My experience, however, tells me that we can enjoy lighter loads and worry less about healthy food on short trips.In the Sierra Nevada I ate more than 60 granola bars in five days with no ill effects. No stove meant a lighter pack, and it was very convenient to not cook. Of course, I usually supplement my backpacking diet with berries and other wild foods, so it probably wasn't all that unhealthy.Different Foods For Different BackpackersEach of us (read full article)

Article Title :: Backpacking In The Sleeping Bear Dunes

I was backpacking in the Sleeping Bear Dunes. It was March, so when I made it through the woods and over the dunes, I'd have miles of beach to myself. It was an over-nighter, a chance to test new ultralight backpacking equipment. I hiked the wooded hills quickly, enjoying the cold air.Halfway through the forest, I stopped to cook noodles. The cheap 3-ounce pot was from a dollar store, and it worked fine. I was happy, because from the catalog descriptions, the expensive titanium pots are all heavier, probably because they're too thick and with too many gadgets.I had to use a small twig-fire when my homemade alcohol stove didn't provide enough heat. I later learned that isoprop (read full article)

Article Title :: Backpacking Journals – Preserve Your Backpacking Experiences

Backpacking is a great way to escape the rat race and be one with nature. Alas, your backpacking experiences can fade with time. The best way to prevent this is to keep a backpacking journal for your adventures. Backpacking JournalsTake a minute to give some consideration to your most recent backpacking experience. What sticks out in your mind? Now think about the first time you ever went backpacking. Undoubtedly, you remember few things about the geography, people you went with, particular backpacking routes and spectacular views. The experiences you’ve forgotten are lost to time. If you had kept a backpacking journal, this won’t be the case. There are famous ins (read full article)

Article Title :: Backspin Advice

Lately, I have received many requests for 2 things. 1. Advice on how to hit backspin (always a common request) 2. Advice on the short game in general.So I have decided to focus my next two newsletters on these subjects. Today the focus will be on backspin, and in the next few weeks I’ll get one out on putting and chipping, and then following that will be course management. Honestly, the first thing that you need to realize about creating backspin is that it’s a very tough shot to accomplish, let alone control.The second thing that you should realize is that there are very few situations where this shot is actually needed. In my opinion, the bes (read full article)

Article Title :: Backyard Croquet

Backyard croquet is a gift that keeps on giving. You can use a croquet set and you can use it again and again and again and again for friend or family entertainment. I recently bought a croquet set and played a game of backyard croquet or poison croquet – another form of backyard croquet – with my family in my backyard. We had a nine-wicket, six player croquet set. Now that we have a set, we can play it as much as we want as a free, fun family outdoor activity. Anyone in the family can also invite their friends over for some cheap outdoor entertainment. They can also take it on dates or other group (read full article)

As Purposeful Primitives we understand the need practice two distinct types of training: progressive resistance for the external musculature and cardiovascular training for the internal plumbing. In addition, training need be coordinated with a distinct eating regimen that amplifies instead of retards results. We know and accept these ultra-basic premises but then what?Physiologically we understand that the optimal time to perform cardiovascular exercise is first thing in the morning while glycogen (emulsified carbs) stores are low in order to force the body to mobilize and oxidize stored body fat. We also understand that early morning cardio is sometimes not possible and cardio duri (read full article)

Article Title :: Balance Your Checkbook and Golf Swing

We all search for it. Balance in our daily lives. Balance while riding a bike. Politicians are always debating a balanced budget in Washington, and most of us could use a little balance in our checkbooks. Balance is a term used in golf quite often as well. It’s a “buzzword” and almost a cliché when it comes to the golf swing. I am sure you have heard numerous times from swing coaches that “you have to stay balanced when swinging your club.” Others phrases that I hear when we talk about golf and balance are the following: “When it comes to a sand shot, dig your feet into the stand so you can stay balanced,” “If the ball is on an uphill lie and above your feet, make sure you s (read full article)
