Article Title :: Making Sense of Web Colors

In 1994, Netscape defined 216 colors that have priority in browsers based on the 256 colors displayed by an 8-bit system. 40 colors display differently between PCs and MACs and are therefore eliminated. These 216 fixed colors, known as web safe colors are universally recognized by all browsers and operating systems. This means that web pages which use only these colors have a better chance of looking the same on any browser. Less than 5% of computer systems are currently using 8-bit systems and are thus confined to 256 colors. However, you should still use web safe colors as a starting point, especially for logos, flat color illustrations, backgrounds, and large areas of the same color   (read full article)

When you are surfing through the web you generally see some pages that are not displayed properly, the frames become all mixed up and the content become unreadable. Many surfers think that it is a problem of coding and the blame incompetent coders. A few days ago, my business partner was researching some professional organisations for us to join. Being the website expert that he is, he didn't just look at what the various associations had to offer in terms of membership benefits, professionalism and value for money: he also wanted to know how good the websites were at promoting the industry and giving the members a world wide web exposure. He made some interesting discoveries. It seems that not many website owners are aware that it's not the pretty appearance, the flashing images or the chosen colour scheme that does the trick. Thousands are spent on gimmicks and are more or less wasted because only a few stranded surfers ever disco  (read full article)

Not many customers are going to hang around that long. Good page layout can be accomplished simply. People expect the navigation to be under the heading or down the left column.
