There are plenty of reasons for office sex with colleagues and co-workers. Mostly, it’s just physical attraction but it could also be sleeping with the boss to move up the career ladder; it could be two single couples or it could be an extramarital affair. But, whatever the reason, with or without a formal human resources guideline, it's wrong. Companies tend to frown upon office romances and sex.

Here are reasons why office sex is wrong:

Sexual harassment: There are laws dealing with sexual harassment in the workplace dealing specifically with unwelcome sexual advances, sexual favors, and verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature. Something may start off as consensual, but what happens when one of the party's decides to make a false claim?

Office productivity: Do you sometimes daydream and picture one of your co-workers nude? What if you actually have seen them naked? Would you be able to get any work done or would you waste a lot of your time flirting?

Breaking through the glass ceiling: If you have sex with your boss as a means to climb the corporate latter you could be putting him, his job, and his livelihood in jeopardy. If this scenario were to ever manifest itself and people were to find out the boss would get fired and lose his job. Do you respect him enough not to let that happen?

Office gossip: Any time a group of people or culture reaches a certain size gossip happens. People talk. People in small businesses talk. People in large corporations talk. One of the things they do is gossip. They especially talk about juicy topics like office sex. If anybody were to ever find out about your office affair you can be sure that rumors, a lot of rumors, will follow. And, you can be sure that a lot of the information that flows through the grapevine will be false and inaccurate.

Marriage: What if the pretty female secretary that you have sex with is married? Would you feel guilty about intruding on what would have otherwise been a happy marriage? What if her husband was to find out? You might have to start worrying about your own personal safety. Office sex with married colleagues can break up marriages.

Human Resources Guidelines: Before even thinking about an office romance with that pretty girl in the next cubicle or that handsome gentleman in the boss' office, check with your company's official Human Resources Department guidelines. See if there is a rule that formally forbids it and ask yourself if one night of pleasure after the office Christmas Party is worth jeopardizing your job over.
