Article Title :: How To Write

LEARNING HOW TO WRITECopyright 2004, Michael LaRoccaAs a student of Spanish, my goal was to think in Spanish. Skipthe word-by-word translation so I'd have the necessary speed tospeak and listen. I know words in Spanish that I'd be hardpressed to translate. Usually profanity, I confess. Chingow! For years my students here in China have studied grammar, andknow it better than you or I. They read. They write. Butspeaking involves moving faster than that. In conversation, wedon't have time to write it first and make sure it's allgrammatically flawless, then read it aloud, perhaps after a bitof rehearsal. So, I try to give them a chance to  (read full article)

Article Title :: How To Break Into Print Publishing

The big question. Do you submit directly to the publishers, or do you find an agent who will do that for you? Based on anecdotal evidence I've heard, it can work either way. The bottom line is, if a publisher reads what he can sell, he'll buy it. It doesn't matter if it comes from an author or an agent. The trick is getting him to read it. That's always your focus. Some people swear by agents because they're the ones who will get you larger percentages and advances. I've decided I don't care quite so much about that. In the case of a new author, I sincerely doubt that'll happen anyway. I'd hate to lose my first sale because some greedy agent asked for too much money. Not that I b  (read full article)

Article Title :: How to Break Into Writing for Newspapers

Besides waking up with a morning coffee, millions of us wake every day to blaring newspaper headlines about police gunning down a suspect, or a fire that leaves a family of four homeless, or a city council that wants to make it illegal to dump computer monitors in the landfill. The stories can be exciting, tragic, informative, even amusing. And being the reporter who gathers the information or covers the scene of emergency incidents must be a thrill. As a freelance writer you may have considered trying your hand at newspaper reporting, but maybe you have little or no journalism classes in your background. Don’t let that stop you.Break into the newspaper business by becomi  (read full article)

Do you have a dream, but keep postponing it because you feel trapped by the responsibilities of life? Want to be a writer, work from home, own your own business? First, we will examine how your dream got deferred. Then, we will outline definitive steps to get you back on track. "How did I get to this point in my life?" Many of us look back and realize if we had it to do again, we would do some things differently. As the owner of a staffing agency for the last seven years, I have developed a theory. In my opinion, many people "fall" into a job. Most accept the first decent paying position out of school. If it's not something they're particularly crazy about,  (read full article)

Article Title :: How to Build A Success Freelance Career (Part 2)

Part 1 of this article discussed the experience you need to successfully build a freelance career. Here, I will outline other necessities.EQUIPMENT: Working from home means you must to have all the necessary equipment. Minimally, a phone, computer and fax machine. Ideally, a [color] copier, modem, fast Internet access, scanner (if your field requires it) and separate work room in your home would complete the picture. CONTACTS/REFERENCES: The most obvious place to start building your customer base is previous employers. Remember the saying, "Don't burn your bridges." It has never been more true than when trying to build a freelance career. As   (read full article)

Article Title :: How to cash in on the huge online demand for writers

Currently many online writers and would-be online writers, feel very much like folks in a ship that is out at sea somewhere but which has run out of drinking water. The fact is that although there is so much water everywhere, getting drinking water becomes a challenge because the water is salty and probably needs some sort of purification and processing to be made drinkable. That is exactly what led the writer to pen those famous words, water, water everywhere but not a drop to drink. The growth of the net has been phenomenal. Every day new websites are launched and new blogs started. All of them without exception require the services of a writer. In many cases the site owner d  (read full article)

Article Title :: How to Catch the Writing Bug

If you earn income as a writer, or use writing as a marketing tool, you know how difficult it can be at times to write. I started writing for my website and newsletter a few years ago. Sometimes it would be two or three weeks between articles. Sometimes writing would be torture. Then one day I caught the writing bug. Now I write two or three articles each day. I don't have to struggle for topic ideas. I have thousands of good ideas to choose from. Instead, now I struggle to limit the scope of areas that I will write about. What happened to cause this change? I caught the writing bug. The writing bug is contagious, and by reading this article, you too will   (read full article)
