Roger Schank Sets Straight Education Curricula-Again

Once again Roger Schank cuts to the chase better than lesser experts in his field of how people learn:

When you think about education, think about this. We have made people so stupid through our absurd system of memorizing nonsense and repeating it back on a multiple choice tests that we have set the stage for FOX News to simply say what it wants to say, and having millions of people believe it, because no one ever taught them how to construct or refute an argument...

...the problem is that school is boring and irrelevant and all the kids know it. They know they will never need algebra, or trigonometry. They know they will never need to balance chemical equations and they know they won't need random historical myths promoted by the school system. When all this stuff was mandated in 1892 it was for a different time and a different kind of student.

My daughter is a top student in a class of 650. She is taking advanced algebra in order to not have to take it at some future time in high school or college when there will be other, more important subjects she wants to put her mind to. She drives herself down that road to her goal regardless of the burdens and problems in the way.

I'm not so lucky--I hate automatic authoritarian rules that require school children to have to master any subject which not only may not be necessary for them at any point in their lives, but for anyone's life. But I am lucky that my daughter will get through this morass and prevail--I only hope it happens without her losing her divine right to question.

New Alabama Relocation Network makes debut

A new network of websites which features the largest 494 cities in Alabama will make it's debut statewide in December. Called the ePartners Network, the statewide web will make it easier for consumers to find properties all across the state of Alabama. In particular, the major cities, Montgomery, Huntsville, Birmingham, and Mobile and their surrounding communities are linked and cross linked so consumers can easily search for homes and real estate from one single location.

The state affiliate Broker, Mike Carraway (Broker, Access Realty), has already introduced the network to real estate agents in Birmingham, Huntsville, Jasper, Cullman, Hoover, Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, Montgomery, and several other Alabama cities. Each city has it's own site and weblog and an agent can elect to be the exclusive real estate agent for their city to help consumers find what they want or to market their property statewide.

This is the first time in the history of real estate that geographic boundaries have been erased. In the past, agents and brokers have worked in certain geographic areas and basically limited themselves to that area, even though they were licensed to do business anywhere in the state. Now, for the first time, those boundaries are gone. An agent licensed to do business in the state can assist customers finding homes or locating a local agent from anywhere.

This new network will be a plus for all real estate ancillary services as well. Mortgage companies, insurance companies, and others can now advertsie their services on the network either statewide or in a local community.

The ePartners Network will change the way that the real estate business is done in other ways as well. It will serve as the first statewide, and even nationwide, platform for paperless real estate transactions.

A Podcast for Every Discipline? The Rise of Educational Audio

It is well-known that podcasting is huge these days. But you might not realize how many educational podcasts are out there.

By educational, we mean shows that focus on some super-focused topic, like a specific period of history or an academic discipline. For instance, there are at least 15 or 20 active podcasts about linguistics, and there are several podcasts out there about conversational Latin (and we were pretty sure that was a dead language that was no longer spoken).

The future of podcasting: Can the business of audio content catch up with the creative revolution?

More than half of the U.S. population over age 12 has now listened to a podcast, according to Edison Research. The medium has fundamentally altered the landscape for audio content, liberating and empowering both listeners and creators. And big acquisitions such as Spotify’s purchase of Gimlet Media signal that the business of podcasting is coming of age, too.

But there remains an economic gulf that some entrepreneurs and investors see as an opportunity. Ad spending on podcasting is around $500 million, by some estimates, but that compares to $17 billion or more for radio.

So where is podcasting heading next? How will speech recognition, smart speakers and other innovations change the landscape for podcasts? Should you start your own show? Could you make any money if you did?

3 Google Tools Full of Educational Potential

Online learning has become an ever more popular endeavor for students, professionals, and lifetime learners. Even outside of a conventional online learning environment, learning on the web is an easy and useful way to gain insight into all areas of academia and industry. More and more often, corporate professionals are seeking elearning opportunities to educate their employees on new technologies and subjects. While actual online courses may be the best option in certain circumstances, there are an endless amount of free tools and resources online that can support further learning experiences. These three Google tools are wonderful examples of online educational resources that teachers, administrators, managers, and corporate leaders can use to help educate their teams.

Google News
Current events are an essential aspect of any education at any stage of your life. Knowing what is going on currently locally and globally is very important. Google news provides a way to take a thorough look at the current global, national, and local news topics as you desire. This is a great tool for business and business leaders because you can stay up to date and educated on the current happenings in your area of industry. Encourage your employees to explore Google News and stay informed about the important areas of news that pertain to their job and your company. While this may seem somewhat odd and unproductive, understanding all aspects of the industry or area you are working within is one of the most important things that people can do.

Google Books
With so much of our information retrieved online through websites and forums, it can be easy to overlook the wealth of knowledge that still remains available in actual print books. Of course, books are an obvious place to look for important and reliable material. In our tech-centric world today, we desire all of our work and studying to take place in one location. Google Books is a wonderful tool for exactly this reason. Providing a fairly extensive library of numerous texts on almost any subject, Google Books is a wonderful web resource for students and professionals. The search mechanism for Google Books helps you locate the texts and material that meet your specific needs. This resource library is always growing and so is likely to have or eventually have the text you are looking for. Google Books is a great resource tool for people in management and other leadership roles. You can find books on any topic and share them with your team members while also doing your own personal reading and learning.

Google Videos
Google video is a wonderful learning resource that many people don't actually know about. Allowing a user to search for various educational and informational videos online, Google Videos can be a great tool for corporation leaders and business owners. Videos are a wonderful way to conduct training sessions by modeling behavior and behavior critiques. Video has long been a go-to resource for professional training sessions. Google Video is a great resource because it makes useful video instantly available online. Use this tool to show an Excel training session or show numerous other educational videos. As a manager, you could use Google Video to have your learners watch a video on leadership or coaching and then use the information they learn from the video to create a coaching tactics guide.

Content Syndication

It is All About Content Syndication

Creating Content

New websites are being launched daily. In order to compete, webmasters need to find alternative ways of producing themed websites. Highly focused articles are often sought by wembasters. Why? Because content on the web is still king! In order to attract search engines and site visitors, webmasters rely heavily on providing new, innovative and fresh content. If the web site content is rich, visitors will come. If the website content is updated regularly, visitors will return. When evaluating a website's traffic it is easy to see that the low cost of syndicated content can increase a website's value. Sites that contain multiple pages related to a specific topic increase the likelihood of being 'found' when a variety of search phrases are used for that topic.

Where to Locate Sound Effects

Royalty-free sound effect libraries contain thousands of sound effects that can be licensed for specific uses. A customer who uses royalty-free sound effects, as opposed to hiring a sound engineer to create them from scratch, can save considerable time, effort, and money. Typically, podcasters and other content producers can obtain non-exclusive rights to a single effect, or they can purchase a subscription of sorts. The subscriptions allow publishers to download a limited number of sound effects during a specified period of time.

Here are a few sources for Sound Effects...

Is web hosting with dedicated (static) IP address better than having a shared IP address for your website? Due to the rapid increase of the number of registered domain names and the finite number of IP addresses, web hosting providers are forced to use shared IP's when possible. In fact, hundreds of websites often share the same address. Dedicated IP hosting is no longer the norm and usually costs more.
