Library Donations Moratorium

The University of Lethbridge Library is not able to accept donations of books, journals or magazines for the main library collection at this time.  Several factors have led to this decision: the COVID-19 restrictions that have resulted in restricted access to campus, ongoing budget constraints and staff shortages.

We will continue to consider significant gifts for Special Collections and Archives. Please contact Wendy Merkley, Associate University Librarian (wendy.merkley@uleth.ca) if you wish to discuss a donation of rare or archival materials.

YouTube Sans: The making of a typeface

How YouTube created a tailor-made font that doubles as a brand ambassador. When I first joined YouTube in the fall of 2014 as a design director, the company’s identity was somewhat disjointed, even to those of us on the inside. We had our full wordmark—a modified version of Alternate Gothic—and our shorthand “play icon,” but […]

Static hoisting

Since I published my 2019 in Review, detailing the industry trend towards static hosting and the rise of Jamstack CDNs like Vercel, a question has persistently come up: how is this different from a server and a traditional CDN on top? Why not then just use servers with containers (even serverless ones)? The answer boils […]

Let’s just design our own corporate blog

I don’t remember much about my first web design class. But I distinctly remember using the eyedropper tool in PaintShop Pro for the first time. I remember picking a color directly from a photograph on my page and then copy/pasting that hex value into my css and changing the text color for my *entire* website. […]

5 exercises to level up your design skills

My design journey started four years ago when I quit my job at a children’s sleep clinic to become a designer. I would read books about UX on my commutes to and from work. Every evening, I would spend 6 to 7 hours taking web development courses and learning what it meant to design. Everything […]

How Apple reinvented the cursor for iPad

Even though Apple did not invent the mouse pointer, history has cemented its place in dragging it out of obscurity and into mainstream use. Its everyday utility, pioneered at Xerox Parc and later combined with a bit of iconic* work from Susan Kare at Apple, has made the pointer our avatar in digital space for […]

i

‘lh’ and ‘rlh’ units

There’s some new units I was totally unaware of from the Level 4 spec for CSS values! The lh unit is “equal to the computed value of line-height” and rlh is the same only of the root element (probably the html element) rather than the current element.

UI cheat sheet: radio buttons, checkboxes, and other selectors

Confirmation bias: believing what you see, seeing what you believe

“The eye sees only what the mind is prepared to comprehend.” — Robertson Davies. A person who thinks women are bad drivers is more likely to notice driving mistakes made by women. A detective who is convinced a suspect is guilty is more likely to pay attention to evidence corroborating their intuition. And, while someone […]

Optimize cumulative layout shift

Learn how to avoid sudden layout shifts to improve user-experience. Layout shifts can be distracting to users. This is very common on the web, including when reading the […]

Stencil icons

How we created a stencil-based web component for displaying SVG icons. In the last ten years, developers have been on a quest to find the best way to implement icons in a digital product. We’ve wandered through low fidelity gifs, elaborately Photoshopped png sprites, icon fonts (remember those?), SVG sprites, and finally inline SVGs. Recently […]

A case study of complex table design
