HONOLULU (Aug. 28, 2013) -- The East-West Center has received a total of $941,440 in grants for research on environmental and economic issues affecting the Asia Pacific region. The awards include:

HONOLULU (Feb 11, 2014) – The East-West Center has been awarded a three-year, $750,000 grant from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to study land-cover and land-use change in Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam.

Over the past half-century these countries have witnessed a major shift from subsistence agrarian economies to commercialized agriculture and, in the case of Thailand and Vietnam, industrialized societies. The project will study transitions in forests, boom crops and urban areas using remote sensing data sources and socioeconomic databases for the 2000-2012 period. The project’s aim is to enhance the conceptual underpinnings of land change science by integrating aspects of global markets, land use and political ecology to explicitly link land changes to local, national and international drivers.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) May 23 -The East-West Center has announced the appointment of three 2014 Japan Studies Fellows at the East-West Center in Washington. The fellowship provides residence of three or six months to scholars and analysts who wish to undertake policy-relevant research and writing on key issues of relevance to the U.S.-Japan partnership, including in the diplomatic, politico-security, economic, social and international fields.

Mary McCarthy is currently an Associate Professor at Drake University. She will conduct research on “Identity Through Historical Memory: The ‘Comfort Women’ Issue in U.S.-Japan Relations.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. (June 9, 2014) -- The East-West Center has announced the appointment of four 2014 Asia Studies Fellows at the East-West Center in Washington. The fellowship provides residence of three or six months at the East-West Center in Washington to scholars and analysts who wish to undertake policy-relevant research and writing on key issues of relevance  to the U.S.-Asia relationship, including in the diplomatic, politico-security, economic, social and international fields. 

Mendee Jargalsaikhan is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of British Columbia. He will conduct research on “The U.S.-Mongolia's Comprehensive Partnership: How to Maintain Momentum.”

Young leaders from 13 Pacific nations participating
in program supported by Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry

HONOLULU (Sept. 9, 2013) -- The East-West Center has welcomed 26 participants from 13 island nations to the 2014 Pacific Islands Leadership Program with Taiwan.

Honolulu (Feb. 12, 2015) -- The East-West Center has been awarded a grant of  $267,186 from the Japan Foundation’s Center for Global Partnership for a three-year dialogue and travel-exchange program focusing on community participation in long-term recovery after a major disaster. 

Participants from the cities of Kobe and Kesennuma in Japan, and New Orleans and Galveston in the United States, will share experiences, perspectives, and best practices for increasing citizen input on post-disaster policy and decision-making. 

International group of 15 accomplished journalists will travel together to China,
the Philippines, Singapore and Hawai‘i to study South China Sea conflicts

HONOLULU - (March 19, 2015) -- The East-West Center has announced the selection of 15 accomplished international journalists for its 2015 Jefferson Fellowships travel-study seminar. The journalists from 12 countries and territories will travel together in May to China, the Philippines, Singapore and Hawai‘i to study territorial conflicts, resource issues, environmental concerns and more in the South China Sea. Participants represent a range of top news organizations including the Associated Press, Washington Post, PBS NewsHour, Times of India, Straits Times, Kyodo News and others.

The fellowship provides residence of three or six months at the East-West Center in Washington to scholars and analysts who wish to undertake policy-relevant research and writing on topics of relevance to contemporary US-Asia policy, including diplomatic, politico-security, and economic issues.

The following fellows will be in three month-residencies between June and December of this year:

HONOLULU (August 13, 2015) – Nearly 100 student fellows from 40 countries and territories have arrived in Hawaii to participate in East-West Center programs this fall. The new graduate students and leadership program participants join a community of more than 110 continuing EWC participants in a diverse residential community on the East-West Center campus.

The new student fellows are participating in the EWC’s Community Building Institute, a two-week intensive activity that introduces the international students to Hawaii’s culture and major issues affecting the Asia Pacific region.

Asia Studies Fellowship Program

HONOLULU (Aug. 8, 2016) – The East-West Center has been awarded a three-year grant totaling $300,000 from the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art and the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation in support of the Center’s Senior Journalists Seminar media exchange program, which seeks to enhance media coverage and elevate the public debate regarding U.S. relations with Muslim majority regions.

Selected from a highly competitive process, these scholars will engage the Washington research and policy community over the course of their three-month residencies.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (August  9, 2017) –Congressional staff from Senate and House member offices and key committees wrapped up the 2017 EWC-Sasakawa USA  Congressional Staff Program on Asia (CSPA) last week on Capitol Hill. This bipartisan educational certificate program for Congressional staff members covered a range of contemporary, policy-relevant U.S.-Asia topics during weekly sessions between June and August.

HONOLULU - (Aug 16, 2017) -- The East-West Center has welcomed 27 emerging leaders from 10 Pacific island nations to this year’s Pacific Islands Leadership Program with Taiwan, or PILP. The participants will spend close to two months in Honolulu, engaging in experiential learning exercises on such topics as applied leadership skills, future scenario planning, social entrepreneurship and risk analysis, climate change and environmental stewardship, international relations, and public health. Then they will travel to Taipei for a month of field study in at the Taiwan Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Institute of Diplomacy and International Affairs.

HONOLULU (January 19, 2018) – The East-West Center in Honolulu Hawai‘i has just published a report on the findings of the inaugural Women20 for the G20 Asia Pacific Dialogue, which was held at the Center in June. The 20-page report expands on initial policy recommendations that the participants released soon after the meeting to help the G20 address several of the most pressing areas of ongoing disparity in women’s economic status throughout the Asia Pacific region and the world.

HONOLULU (Oct 25, 2018) -- The East-West Center has been awarded funding from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to support the International Research and Applications Project (IRAP), which is designed to support international, decision-based research on climate-sensitive health risks in partnership with the Pacific Regional Integrated Science and Assessment (RISA) program.

HONOLULU (April 10, 2019) -- Several former participants in East-West Center programs have been featured in recent editions of Forbes’ “30 Under 30” list for young entrepreneurs in Asia who are “leveraging business tools to solve the region's problems.”

HONOLULU (Feb. 7, 2020) – The East-West Center has been awarded a five-year grant totaling $50,000 from the Fish Family Foundation in support of the Center’s Changing Faces Women’s Leadership Seminar and #galswithLEI Forum, which collectively seek to enhance women’s leadership skills and entrepreneurial capacity; experientially explore innovative entrepreneurship; build a sense of self-efficacy; and expand national and regional networks.

As a result of the Fish Family Foundation’s funding, the Changing Faces Seminar will now be able to include female business or social entrepreneurs from Japan each year until 2024. The funding will also substantially increase the Center’s ability to include mainland and international speakers in the associated #galswithLEI Forum.
