Local council scraps Australia Day

A local government council in Melbourne's inner northeast has voted to stop recognising January 26 as Australia Day. Yarra City Council has also decided to scrap citizenship ceremonies on the date, despite threats from the Federal Government that politicising such ceremonies is a breach of federal law. The move has angered some locals but Indigenous groups say Yarra City Council had an obligation to act.

A fresh stoush has broken out between the Federal Government and a Melbourne council over its decision to cancel Australia Day celebrations. The Yarra Council in Melbourne's inner north last night became the first in the country to abandon Australia Day in solidarity with Indigenous people. The Prime Minister says he is deeply disappointed by the decision, and is accusing the council of breaching its duties.
