HONOLULU (Feb. 11, 2011) -- More than 130 graduate students from 48 universities in 26 nations are set to gather next week at the Hawai‘i Imin International Conference Center in Honolulu to present their research at the East-West Center’s 10th annual International Graduate Student Conference. The interdisciplinary gathering, planned and organized by EWC students, is the largest of its kind worldwide. All conference panel sessions are free and open to the public.

HONOLULU (Nov. 12, 2010) – The application deadline for the East-West Center's 2011-12 Asia Pacific Leadership Program (APLP) – considered the premier leadership education program in the Asia Pacific region – is Dec 1, 2010.

Entering its eleventh year, the APLP is a graduate certificate program combining the development of regional expertise with the enhancement of individual leadership capacity. Based at the Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, the program has created a network of dynamic leaders in 52 countries. All participants receive a fee-waiver fellowship valued at approximately $15,000.

HONOLULU (October 7, 2010) – The East-West Center’s AsiaPacificEd Program for Schools has been awarded two grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) for teacher professional development programs focusing on legacies of World War II in the Pacific.

The first grant, an $180,900 award, is to conduct a three-week institute on “Southeast Asia: At the Crossroads of World War II.” The second grant, an $180,000 award, is for an NEH Landmarks of American History and Culture workshop titled “Pearl Harbor: History and Memory Across Asia and the Pacific.” Both workshops are conducted in Honolulu, Hawai‘i, where the Center’s main campus is located.

HONOLULU (September 24, 2010) -- The East-West Center has been awarded funding from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to serve as the lead institution in the Pacific Regional Integrated Science and Assessment program, which is designed to help island and coastal communities cope with the effects of climate change.

HONOLULU (June 10, 2010) – An estimated 800 Asia Pacific and U.S. scholars, officials, educators, business leaders and other professionals – most of them alumni of East-west Center programs – will gather in Honolulu July 2-5 for the Center’s 50th Anniversary International Conference at the Hawai‘i Convention Center.

The gathering will provide an opportunity for alumni from more than 35 countries who have participated in Center programs over the last five decades to reunite, renew friendships, and reminisce.

HONG KONG (April 23, 2010) – More than 250 journalists and media experts from across the Asia Pacific region and the U.S. will gather in Hong Kong April 25-28 to discuss the latest news and media-industry issues in the region.

HONOLULU (Feb. 18, 2010) – The East-West Center has received a grant of $225,000 from the United Nations Democracy Fund to help strengthen Pakistan’s recently restored democracy. The project will reinforce electoral and parliamentary processes and enhance civil society’s capacity to promote accountability and transparency.

“Pakistan is a Muslim country of 164 million people, and a nuclear power,” said project leader Shabbir Cheema, Director of the East-West Center’s Asia-Pacific Governance and Democracy Initiative. “But a weak Parliament, lack of trust in electoral processes and weak civil society institutions have constrained the deepening and consolidation of democracy in the country.”

HONOLULU (July 23, 2009) – The implications of the current global economic crisis for the Asia Pacific region will be the topic of a luncheon forum hosted by the East-West Center on Monday, Aug. 3.  The luncheon at the EWC’s Hawaii Imin International Conference Center (Jefferson Hall) is open to the public and will feature a panel discussion by leading experts from the Asia Pacific region, including:

• Barbara Weisel, Assistant U.S. Trade Representative for Southeast Asia and the Pacific. Weisel is the lead negotiator for the Trans-Pacific Strategic Economic Partnership initiative and the U.S. Free Trade Agreement negotiations with Malaysia and Thailand. 

HONOLULU (June 23) - More than 20 graduates of an East-West Center-administered scholarship program for accomplished young scholars from Pacific island nations are back in Hawai‘i this week to attend a special seminar on addressing issues and envisioning futures in the region.

The former students are all graduates of the United States-South Pacific Scholarship Program (USSP), which is funded by Department of State and administered by the East-West Center. Among the attendees are graduates who are now working in public health, communications, finance, planning, education, government, scientific research and more. Participants have travelled from as far away as the UK, Norway and across the Pacific to attend the seminar.

Flooded houses. Inundated farmland. A collapsed seawall. Mud-filled roads. Contaminated taro patches. These were among the graphic images of devastating high-tide coastal inundation events in the Pacific that were presented at the annual Pacific Partners meeting of the Pacific Risk Management ‘Ohana (PRiMO), held in Tumon, Guam, on the 18th and 19th of March, 2009.

HONOLULU (Feb. 6) – The application deadline for the East-West Center's new Norway-Pacific Islands Scholarship Program (NPISP)— created for students from the Solomon Islands or Vanuatu to pursue a master’s degree in anthropology, Pacific islands studies, or political science at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa— is March 15, 2009. Study will begin in August 2009.  Scholarship provisions include tuition, residence hall fees, book allowance, living stipend, health insurance, and round-trip airfare.

HONOLULU (Nov. 18) -- The East-West Center (EWC) received two grants of $496,000 from the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs to support the U.S.- Timor-Leste   (USTL) and U.S.- South Pacific (USSP) Scholarship Programs. These programs aim to develop a corps of leaders who will contribute to political, economic, and social development in their home countries and strengthen relations with the United States.

HONOLULU (Dec. 5) -- The East-West Center’s AsiaPacificEd Program for Schools has been awarded a $150,000 “Landmarks of American History and Culture” grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) to conduct teachers workshops on “ Pearl Harbor: History, Memory, and Memorial .” These workshops are co-sponsored by the Arizona Memorial Museum Association, the National Park Service, and the Japan American Society and will be held at the East-West Center during the summer of 2009. This is the fifth Landmarks grant that NEH has awarded to the East-West Center for the Pearl Harbor workshops.

HONOLULU (Sept. 30) -- Nearly 500 scholars, officials, educators and business leaders will gather in Bali November 13-15 for an international conference on the theme of "Building an Asia Pacific Community: Unity in Diversity."

Conference sessions will cover current regional issues, including international relations, security, democracy and Islam, global warming, volunteerism, gender issues, innovation, health, business, and social and cultural issues.

Among the featured speakers will be the new governor of Bali; Indonesia’s ministers of trade, people’s welfare and women’s empowerment; the U.S. ambassador to Indonesia; the governor of Hawaii; the president of the East-West Center; and business leaders.

HONOLULU (Aug. 7) — The East-West Center Association (EWCA) recently established two new alumni chapters in Southeast Asia.  The new chapters located in Aceh, Indonesia and Dili, Timor-Leste (East Timor) raises the number of chapters in the EWCA global network to 46.

SINGAPORE (May 30) -- Inflation in the Asia Pacific is set to rise sharply this year in the face of increased oil and commodity prices, contributing to a substantial downward revision in the overall economic growth forecast for the region, according to a report released today by the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council (PECC).

HONOLULU (Nov. 7) – The East-West Center (EWC) is now accepting applications for two journalism travel-study fellowships—the Spring 2008 Jefferson Fellowships for Journalists and the 4th Korea-United States Journalists Exchange.

The Spring 2008 Jefferson Fellowships program will take place May 3-25, 2008, and is open to journalists from the United States, Asia, and the Pacific islands. The theme for this program is “Beyond the Boomtowns: Development Challenges in The Other China.” Fellows will travel to Honolulu, Hawaii; and Beijing, Chongqing and Chengdu, China. The China study tour will include overland travel through smaller cities and rural areas. Fellows will visit regions that reflect different stages of China’s economic and political development.

HONOLULU (Oct 22) – The 2007 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded on October 12 to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) chaired by East-West Center Alumnus Dr. Rajendra Pachauri. This award, jointly shared with former U.S. Vice-President Al Gore, was “for their efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change, and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change,” according to the Norwegian Nobel Committee.

HONOLULU (March 7) — The infant years of the twenty-first century have seen a rapid acceleration in economic growth and political power in the Asia Pacific region. High-level speakers offer differing views at U.S. Asia Pacific Council conference

WASHINGTON, D.C. (May 26, 2011) -- The pending Trans-Pacific Partnership, or TPP, could serve as a vital stepping stone to a broader regional trade agreement, said key Asia-Pacific trade ministers who addressed the 8th annual U.S. Asia Pacific Council Conference on May 23. But they warned that the TPP will not realize this potential if trading nations abandon all efforts to conclude the World Trade Organization’s long-stalled Doha Round of negotiations.

In contrast, U.S. trade policymakers who addressed the conference were skeptical about the viability of the Doha process but quite bullish on the TPP.
