Tdap Vaccine Effectiveness in Adolescents During the 2012 Washington State Pertussis Epidemic

Although waning immunity with the childhood pertussis vaccination series has been reported, there are limited data on duration of protection of the adolescent pertussis vaccine (Tdap), especially among those who have received only acellular vaccines.

This study reports that protection from Tdap wanes substantially 2 to 4 years after vaccination among adolescents who received all acellular vaccines during childhood. This waning protection is likely contributing to the increase in adolescent pertussis. (Read the full article)

Trends of US Hospitals Distributing Infant Formula Packs to Breastfeeding Mothers, 2007 to 2013

Distribution of infant formula discharge packs to breastfeeding mothers is common practice in maternity care facilities in the United States. Receiving discharge packs is associated with shortened exclusive breastfeeding duration. Many efforts have been made to discourage this practice.

Weight Growth Velocity and Postnatal Growth Failure in Infants 501 to 1500 Grams: 2000-2013

Postnatal growth failure is common for very low birth weight infants. Although many of the major morbidities experienced by these infants during their initial NICU stays have decreased in recent years, it is unclear whether growth has improved.

For infants weighing 501 to 1500 g, average growth velocity increased and postnatal growth failure decreased from 2000 to 2013. Still, in 2013, half were discharged with a weight below the 10th percentile for postmenstrual age. (Read the full article)

Trisomy 21 and Risk of Retinopathy of Prematurity

It is known that trisomy 21 decreases the risk of (nonocular) angiogenic-mediated disorders, such as solid tumors. It is not known whether trisomy 21 decreases the risk of ocular angiogenic-mediated disorders such as retinopathy of prematurity.

This study shows that trisomy 21 decreases the risk of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), thus unmasking a potentially identifiable genetic component to ROP risk. This study paves the way for the future development of a laboratory-based ROP screening tool. (Read the full article)

Trends in Emergency Department Visits for Unsupervised Pediatric Medication Exposures, 2004-2013

Unsupervised medication exposures increased during the previous decade, despite child-resistant packaging and caregiver education. To achieve the Healthy People 2020 objective of reducing emergency department visits for unintentional pediatric medication overdoses, targeted interventions including improved safety packaging may be needed.

Since 2010, emergency department visits for unsupervised medication exposures started to decrease. Most visits involved solid dose medications, typically for adult use. Most liquid medication exposure visits involved 4 over-the-counter pediatric products and may be more readily amenable for interventions. (Read the full article)

Febrile Seizures After 2010-2011 Trivalent Inactivated Influenza Vaccine

Previous studies found that 2010–2011 trivalent inactivated influenza vaccine (TIV) and 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) were associated with statistically significant increased risks of febrile seizures (FS) in the United States.

Estimated FS relative risks after TIV or PCV13 adjusted for DTaP were >1, although not statistically significant and lower than previous estimates. Same-day administration of TIV and PCV13 did not result in more FS compared with separate-day vaccination. (Read the full article)

1. The Labor Department on Friday said that 20.5 million jobs were lost in April, and the unemployment rate climbed to 14.7 percent. The staggering report showed that a decade of job gains were wiped out in just one month. The report also notes that if it included workers classified as furloughed or temporarily laid off, "the overall unemployment rate would have been almost 5 percentage points higher than reported." The Labor Department's March report showed the unemployment rate climbing to 4.4 percent, from 3.5 percent in February. Weekly data previously showed that more than 33 million Americans have filed initial jobless claims over the course of seven weeks, a number that's equivalent to about 21 percent of the labor force. The ADP National Employment Report also said earlier this week that 20.2 million private sector jobs were lost from March to April. President Trump, who was live on Fox & Friends the moment the report was released, described the unemployment numbers as "fully expected" and "no surprise." [ U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics , The Washington Post ] 2. The Office of Special Counsel is recommending that ousted vaccine official Dr. Rick Bright be reinstated while it investigates his case, his lawyers announced Friday. Bright, while leading coronavirus vaccine development, was recently removed from his position as the director of the Department of Health and Human Services' Biomedical Advanced Research and Devel
