SYNOPSIS

Emma (Karin Viard) est musicienne, elle joue de la contrebasse. Elle attend un enfant dont elle sent avec bonheur chaque jour un peu plus la présence en elle.

Au cours d’une visite médicale, la jeune femme apprend qu’elle a un cancer du sein. Le médecin qui lui annonce prévoit un avortement, les soins préconisés étant selon lui incompatibles avec la grossesse.

Simon (Laurent Lucas), son compagnon, l’incite à consulter un autre spécialiste, le docteur Morin, qui affirme que les traitements peuvent être suivis tout en continuant la grossesse.

Emma reprend confiance. Son corps qui l’a trahie redevient un lieu de vie : elle doit maintenant se battre pour deux…

LE FILM

« Haut les cœurs ! parle du cancer, comment il abîme la féminité et transforme l’amour. […] Il fallait pour jouer Emma quelqu’un de vivant et de drôle, une force de la nature dont on se dirait “ tout le monde peut être malade, sauf elle. ” Je voulais rendre Karin la plus belle possible… »

Dans ce film que Solveig Anspach a porté à bout de bras pour raconter avec pudeur et énergie cette histoire vécue intimement, Karin Viard éclate de tout son talent. Cette actrice « au-delà de l’excellence » (Libération) a obtenu pour le rôle d’Emma, femme enceinte qui lutte pour sa vie et celle de son bébé, le César de la meilleure actrice.

Solveig Anspach, dont c’est le premier long métrage de fiction après une œuvre de documentariste, refuse tout au long du film tout sentimentalisme et pathos.

Elle enregistre l’histoire de cette guerre contre la maladie avec toute la sobriété et l’attention requises par un tel sujet, en se tenant au plus près des visages. Celui de Simon (merveilleux Laurent Lucas), d’Olivier, le frère d’Emma (fragile et troublant Julien Cottreau), du docteur Morin (Philippe Duclos, bouleversant de pudeur et de justesse), et surtout d’Emma, à laquelle Karin VIARD prête toute sa présence charnelle, son énergie de combattante pour la vie et sa grâce de femme d’aujourd’hui.
