Bundesliga soccer to resume on May 16 in empty stadiums

The Bundesliga soccer season will resume on May 16 in empty stadiums, picking up right where it left off two months ago amid the coronavirus pandemic. Thursday’s announcement comes one day after clubs were told the season could restart following a meeting between German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the country’s 16 state governors. Germany has had a high number of COVID-19 infections — nearly 170,000 by Thursday, according to Johns Hopkins University — with about 7,000 deaths, a lower number compared to elsewhere.

'Slap Shot' still iconic in hockey despite sport's changes

A few nights after one of their players was injured by a dirty hit, the Johnstown Jets plotted to exact some revenge on Buffalo's Greg Neeld. An all-out brawl broke out during warmups and the North American Hockey League game was postponed, much to the dismay of ownership and presumably the fans at a sold-out War Memorial Arena. It just so happened that director George Roy Hill was in the arena that night, cameras rolling.

DESlib: A Dynamic ensemble selection library in Python

DESlib is an open-source python library providing the implementation of several dynamic selection techniques. The library is divided into three modules: (i) dcs, containing the implementation of dynamic classifier selection methods (DCS); (ii) des, containing the implementation of dynamic ensemble selection methods (DES); (iii) static, with the implementation of static ensemble techniques. The library is fully documented (documentation available online on Read the Docs), has a high test coverage (codecov.io) and is part of the scikit-learn-contrib supported projects. Documentation, code and examples can be found on its GitHub page: https://github.com/scikit-learn-contrib/DESlib.

Online Sufficient Dimension Reduction Through Sliced Inverse Regression

Sliced inverse regression is an effective paradigm that achieves the goal of dimension reduction through replacing high dimensional covariates with a small number of linear combinations. It does not impose parametric assumptions on the dependence structure. More importantly, such a reduction of dimension is sufficient in that it does not cause loss of information. In this paper, we adapt the stationary sliced inverse regression to cope with the rapidly changing environments. We propose to implement sliced inverse regression in an online fashion. This online learner consists of two steps. In the first step we construct an online estimate for the kernel matrix; in the second step we propose two online algorithms, one is motivated by the perturbation method and the other is originated from the gradient descent optimization, to perform online singular value decomposition. The theoretical properties of this online learner are established. We demonstrate the numerical performance of this online learner through simulations and real world applications. All numerical studies confirm that this online learner performs as well as the batch learner.

Agnostic tests can control the type I and type II errors simultaneously

Source: Brazilian Journal of Probability and Statistics, Volume 34, Number 2, 230--250.

Abstract:
Despite its common practice, statistical hypothesis testing presents challenges in interpretation. For instance, in the standard frequentist framework there is no control of the type II error. As a result, the non-rejection of the null hypothesis $(H_{0})$ cannot reasonably be interpreted as its acceptance. We propose that this dilemma can be overcome by using agnostic hypothesis tests, since they can control the type I and II errors simultaneously. In order to make this idea operational, we show how to obtain agnostic hypothesis in typical models. For instance, we show how to build (unbiased) uniformly most powerful agnostic tests and how to obtain agnostic tests from standard p-values. Also, we present conditions such that the above tests can be made logically coherent. Finally, we present examples of consistent agnostic hypothesis tests.

Transfer Learning for sEMG-based Hand Gesture Classification using Deep Learning in a Master-Slave Architecture. (arXiv:2005.03460v1 [eess.SP])

Recent advancements in diagnostic learning and development of gesture-based human machine interfaces have driven surface electromyography (sEMG) towards significant importance. Analysis of hand gestures requires an accurate assessment of sEMG signals. The proposed work presents a novel sequential master-slave architecture consisting of deep neural networks (DNNs) for classification of signs from the Indian sign language using signals recorded from multiple sEMG channels. The performance of the master-slave network is augmented by leveraging additional synthetic feature data generated by long short term memory networks. Performance of the proposed network is compared to that of a conventional DNN prior to and after the addition of synthetic data. Up to 14% improvement is observed in the conventional DNN and up to 9% improvement in master-slave network on addition of synthetic data with an average accuracy value of 93.5% asserting the suitability of the proposed approach.
