Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) today introduced legislation to make 4-year public colleges and universities tuition free. “We live in a highly competitive global economy. If our economy is to be strong, we need the best educated work force in the world. That will not happen if every year hundreds of thousands of bright young people cannot afford to go to college and if millions more leave school deeply in debt,” Sanders said. Under the legislation, $70 billion a year in assistance – two-thirds from the federal government and one-third from states – would replace what public colleges and universities now charge in tuition and fees. The federal share of the cost would be offset by imposing a tax on Wall Street transactions by investment houses, hedge funds and other speculators. The legislation also would overhaul student loan programs so students and their parents could reduce crushing debt loads which now exceed Americans’ credit card debt. Federal profits on loans would be eliminated, work-study programs expanded and incentives offered for colleges and universities to keep costs down. “We once led the world in the percentage of our people with a college degree, now we are in 12th place.” Sanders said. “Countries like Germany, Denmark, Sweden and many more are providing free or inexpensive higher education for their young people. They understand how important it is to be investing in their youth. We should be doing the same,” he added. Tuition at 4-year public colleges and universities rose by 50 percent in the United States during the past decade. As state governments have cut support for higher education, the burden has shifted to students and their parents. With this spring’s college commencement season underway, the class of 2015 is the most indebted class in American history, according to Mark Kantrowitz, publisher of Edvisors, a website on college costs and financial aid. Questions surrounding Hillary Clinton and the Clinton Foundation continue to grow. On Sunday, Democratic National Committee interim chairperson Donna Brazile defended Clinton’s meetings as secretary of state with Clinton Foundation donors, saying, "When Republicans meet with their donors, with their supporters, their activists, they call it a meeting. When Democrats do that, they call it a conflict." Donna Brazile’s comments come in response to an Associated Press investigation revealing that while Hillary Clinton served as secretary of state, more than half of the private citizens she met with during the reporting period had donated to the Clinton Foundation. The AP investigation comes after a three-year battle to gain access to State Department calendars. The analysis shows that at least 85 of 154 people Hillary Clinton had scheduled phone or in-person meetings with were foundation donors. Before I visited the desert near Dubai for the first time I had a rather romanticised idea about what I might find: rolling dunes, crystal clear skies, and maybe a camel or two. More than anything though, I expected a clean and pristine environment. That wasn't the case: there were motorcycle and dune buggy tracks all over the place - it looked like a carpark after a busy day, albeit a very sandy one. But every disappointment is its own opportunity and since that trip I've made a point of photographing the tracks in the sand whenever I see them. This particular set was shot in November 2013 during my Landscape Photography workshop for Gulf Photo Plus.

Three portraits from yesterday's Blackpool Pride Festival in Blackpool, all of which were shot with the Fujifilm X-T1 and 90mm f/2 (my new favourite lens). As always, it was a great event, with lots of great characters.

While pretty much everyone enjoyed the Blackpool Pride Festival there were a handful of slightly less cheerful folk.

This isn't quite abstract enough to be unrecognisable, but I like that it's not as immediately obvious as some of my other shots of Dubai.

Yes, it's a composite: one shot from Dubai, the other from the Ash Sharqiyah region of Oman, taken during one of mine and Issa's trips to my favourite country in the Middle East. Both the originals are visible when you hover your mouse over the 'Show the Original' link at the bottom right of the image.
