HONOLULU (Dec. 1, 2010) – Fifteen elementary and secondary school teachers from China have arrived at the East-West Center in Honolulu, Hawai‘i, for the inauguration of a new educational exchange in which the teachers will spend six months living, learning, and working with their counterparts at host schools in six U.S. states. EWC is offering the China-U.S. Educational Exchange Residency Program in cooperation with the Chinese Ministry of Education.

HONOLULU (October 13, 2010) -- East-West Center education programs have been awarded three grants totaling $869,704. The recent awards are:

• $239,594 from the U.S. Department of State to support the Study of the U.S. Institute for Student Leaders on Global Environmental Issues . The institute aims to develop young leaders with the ability to build and maintain resilient communities in light of global environmental challenges. Through field study in Hawai‘i and Washington D.C., participants gain a better understanding of sustainability and create a clear action plan addressing an environmental concern upon their return home.

HONOLULU (Nov. 4, 2010) – Applications are being accepted through December 31 for the East-West Center’s 2011 Summer Seminar on Population. Held annually since 1970, the Summer Seminar provides a forum for learning and discussion on a wide range of population and health issues. Former participants work in government, nongovernmental (NGO), and academic institutions throughout the Asia-Pacific region and around the world.

HONOLULU (Nov. 12, 2010) – The application deadline for the East-West Center's 2011-12 Asia Pacific Leadership Program (APLP) – considered the premier leadership education program in the Asia Pacific region – is Dec 1, 2010.

Entering its eleventh year, the APLP is a graduate certificate program combining the development of regional expertise with the enhancement of individual leadership capacity. Based at the Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, the program has created a network of dynamic leaders in 52 countries. All participants receive a fee-waiver fellowship valued at approximately $15,000.

HONG KONG (April 23, 2010) – More than 250 journalists and media experts from across the Asia Pacific region and the U.S. will gather in Hong Kong April 25-28 to discuss the latest news and media-industry issues in the region.

HONOLULU (March 25) – Metropolitan leaders and experts from a variety of Asian and U.S. cities are gathering at the East-West Center March 29-31 for a seminar on critical urbanization issues facing Asia’s cities. Attendance at the meeting is closed. Among the attendees are the governor of Jakarta; vice-mayor of Shenzhen; deputy mayor of Taipei; urban affairs advisor, Government of Karnataka (Bangalore); directors of city planning from Denver, Colorado; Miami, Florida; San Francisco, California; and Seattle, Washington; along with other officials and specialists from Pakistan, the Philippines, Vietnam, India, Los Angeles, New York and more.

An East-West Center 50th Anniversary Event

As part of the East-West Center's 50th anniversary events, the Center's Asia Pacific Center for Journalists and local co-sponsor the University of Hong Kong Journalism and Media Studies Centre have announced plans for the EWC’s the  at the East-West Center's second biennial international media conference .

HONOLULU (August 6) – East-West Center Senior Fellow Dr. Fereidun Fesharaki has been appointed to the Board of Directors of the Dubai Mercantile Exchange Limited (DME). The DME is the premier international energy futures and commodities exchange in the Middle East, providing a financially secure, well-regulated transparent trading environment.

HONOLULU (July 22) -- East-West Center President Charles E. Morrison and Director of Education Terance W. Bigalke will be among the delegates of a U.S. higher education leaders’ mission to Indonesia July 26-31. Mission organizers have said that the delegation’s scheduled visit will not be altered by the recent hotel bombings in Jakarta.

HONOLULU (June 10) – The East-West Center has received a two-year grant of $94,747 from the Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership to support the Japan-United States Journalist Exchange .

This 12-day exchange program, co-sponsored by the East-West Center and Nihon Shinbun Kyokai (NSK), sends six to seven Japanese journalists to the United States and an equal number of U.S. journalists to Japan to broaden the journalists’ knowledge of the relationship and challenges faced between the two countries.

HONOLULU (Feb. 27) -- A delegation of election observers coordinated by the East-West Center in Honolulu has begun arriving in the Federated States of Micronesia to act as official monitors for the FSM national congressional and Chuuk state elections on March 3. Some 20 observers from a variety of countries in the Asia Pacific region will be participating in the monitoring project, which will focus on learning about local election processes and promoting their integrity and legitimacy.

Among the observers is expected to be U.S. congressional Rep. Eni F. H. Faleomavaega of American Samoa, along with a number of other prominent scholars and diplomats. Teams of observers and translators will be stationed at a number of key polling and vote tabulating locations in Pohnpei, Chuuk and Yap.

HONOLULU (Dec. 11, 2008) – The East-West Center (EWC) received a grant of $414,952 from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health & Human Development to support on-going research in Japan on family change. The multi-year study, “Innovations in Early Life Course Transitions,” focuses on the interplay of structural societal change, individual behavior and attitudes, and the emergence of an altered family institution in Japanese society.

HONOLULU (Dec. 23) – East-West Center Senior Fellow Fereidun Fesharaki has been appointed by U.S. Secretary of Energy Samuel Bodman to serve on the National Petroleum Council (NPC). The Council is a self-funded advisory body to the Secretary of Energy whose members represent all sectors of the oil and natural gas industries and related interests.

HONOLULU (Nov. 14) – As part of its biennial alumni conference, being held this year in Bali, Indonesia, the East-West Center honored several alumni at a luncheon today for their outstanding personal accomplishments and service toward the Center’s mission of helping to promote better relations and understanding among the peoples of Asia, the Pacific and the United States.

HONOLULU (Nov. 18) -- The East-West Center (EWC) received two grants of $496,000 from the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs to support the U.S.- Timor-Leste   (USTL) and U.S.- South Pacific (USSP) Scholarship Programs. These programs aim to develop a corps of leaders who will contribute to political, economic, and social development in their home countries and strengthen relations with the United States.

HONOLULU (Dec. 5) -- The East-West Center’s AsiaPacificEd Program for Schools has been awarded a $150,000 “Landmarks of American History and Culture” grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) to conduct teachers workshops on “ Pearl Harbor: History, Memory, and Memorial .” These workshops are co-sponsored by the Arizona Memorial Museum Association, the National Park Service, and the Japan American Society and will be held at the East-West Center during the summer of 2009. This is the fifth Landmarks grant that NEH has awarded to the East-West Center for the Pearl Harbor workshops.

HONOLULU (September 17) The East-West Center (EWC) received a grant of $350,000 from the U.S. Department of State to support a new six-week institute on environmental stewardship for undergraduate students from Southeast Asia.

The EWC, working in partnership with more than 20 organizations including the University of Hawaii’s Environmental Studies Program, Stanford University’s Woods Institute for the Environment, and the Nature Conservancy, will host and facilitate this program in May-June 2009 for approximately 20 students from non-traditional and underserved groups in the region.

SINGAPORE (May 30) -- Inflation in the Asia Pacific is set to rise sharply this year in the face of increased oil and commodity prices, contributing to a substantial downward revision in the overall economic growth forecast for the region, according to a report released today by the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council (PECC).

HONOLULU (March 19) – The East-West Center’s Board of Governors has re-elected one of its members, the Hon. Tun Daim Zainuddin, to another three-year term. At a meeting on Feb. 29, the board members unanimously elected Daim to his third term on the board, which will extend until March 2011.

HONOLULU (September 13) --  The East-West Center (EWC) teams up with Sports Marketing Japan to launch its inaugural East-West Sports Summit held from November 7-9 at the EWC’s Imin International Conference Center in Honolulu, Hawaii.  Designed for sports marketing executives, media professionals, and others working in sports-related enterprises in government, NGO, and business sectors, this conference brings together the industry’s top leaders in the field to discuss the changing dynamics of sports markets in the Asia Pacific region.
 

HONOLULU (September 5) – India’s consul general in San Francisco, (Ambassador) B.S. Prakash will address the changing profile of India and the impact on its relationship with the United States at a luncheon gathering at the East-West Center Monday, September 10.

The luncheon will begin at noon with registration commencing at 11:30 a.m. The venue is the Garden Level of the East-West Center’s Imin International Conference Center (1777 East-West Road). The luncheon is open to the public at a cost of $22 per person. RSVP deadline is Thursday, September 6. Limited parking is available on the lawn between Lincoln Hall and the Imin Center for a cost of $3.

The luncheon forum is sponsored by the East-West Center, Pacific and Asian Affairs Council, Friends of the East-West Center, and the University of Hawai‘i Center for South Asian Studies.

HONOLULU (June 14) – Three Hawaii high school students have been selected to take part in the East-West Center's AsiaPacificEd Program "Partnership for Youth: Reporting for Change: Cambodia” program. Hannah Ross and Davin Aoyagi of Honolulu’s Mid-Pacific Institute and Maria Walczuk of Hilo’s Connections Public Charter School will join 18 of their mainland counterparts for the four-week program that gets underway July 1.

Focusing on the Khmer Rouge Tribunal as a case study, the students will analyze the role of journalism in covering an event of international importance as well as the role of the media in the democratic process.

HONOLULU (June 26) – Director of the East-West Center’s Research Program Nancy Lewis has been elected vice president of the prestigious Pacific Science Association (PSA) at its recently concluded conference in Okinawa, Japan. Serving as an officer in the influential science group is not new to Lewis. She most recently represented the PSA as its secretary-general and treasurer.

Founded in 1920, the PSA is the oldest interdisciplinary science organization in the Asia Pacific region. With its secretariat headquartered at Honolulu’s Bishop Museum, the group facilitates international research and collaboration throughout the region. It focuses on key regional issues and problems to engage science in the service of human needs and to improve the quality of life of the region’s people and of the natural world upon which they depend.

The East-West Center is hosting two events of timely interest Friday, May 25 at the Hawaii Imin International Conference Center, 1771 East-West Road.

“Building Understanding Between the United States and the Asian Muslim World” featuring journalists from the United States and Asian nations with substantial Muslim populations. The program will feature reflections and insights by seasoned journalists stemming from their participation in the EWC’s Senior Journalists Seminar, a travel-study-dialogue program that offers the journalists a chance to engage their peers on issues dividing the United States and the Asian Muslim nations, especially since 9 /11.

HONOLULU (June 5) –Energy Economics and Policy in Mainland China and Taiwan, the first book dealing with cross-strait energy issues, was recently published by the Beijing-based China Environmental Science Press.

Co-edited by East-West Center Senior Fellow ZhongXiang Zhang and Yunchang Jeffrey Bor of the Taipei-based Chung-Hua Institution for Economic Research, the over 300-page book comprises 20 chapters, including 13 from Mainland China, written by senior officials, leading experts and chief executives from 21 institutes in the Mainland and Taiwan. It offers in-depth analysis of issues related to coal and clean coal technologies, oil, natural gas, power generation, nuclear energy, energy conservation, renewable energy, energy security, environmental issues, and energy cooperation across the Taiwan Strait.

It may appear to be small and simple, but the pavilion plays an important role in the daily life of the people of South and Southeast Asia. Be it a Royal sala in Thailand, a rural bus stop in India, or simply a welcomed shelter and sanctuary from the relentless hot summer sun or cool monsoon rains, throughout the region the pavilion is held in high esteem.

Sunday, April 22, from 2 to 3 p.m., the East-West Center Gallery will present a comprehensive look at this much-overlooked structure and its role in regional culture. Dr. Kazi K. Ashraf, associate professor at the School of Architecture at University of Hawaii-Manoa, will take gallery-goers through the world of the pavilion from its fundamental function to its ornamental glory.

A TRADITIONAL THAI DANCE performance will highlight the opening of the East-West Center Gallery’s latest exhibition, Sala: Gem of Thai Architecture, Sunday, March 11, 2007 beginning at 1:30 p.m.

Brief opening remarks will be delivered by Thailand’s Los Angeles-based Consul General. Co-curators of the exhibition Virginia Henderson and Dr. Michael Schuster will conduct walk-throughs of the Gallery and explain the colorful exhibits.

The newly-reconstructed Royal Sala, donated to the East-West Center by Thailand’s king, His Majesty Bhumibol Adulyadej, will also be open to the public. The ornately decorated gold-leaf and teak wood pavilion replaces an earlier sala gifted to the EWC by the Thai Royal Family in 1967.

HONOLULU (April 5) — East-West Center Senior Fellow Emerita Meheroo Jussawalla’s recently published book, On Six Dollars to America: A Tale of Adventure, Courage and Reward (Paperback, $13.99, Amazon.com) takes the reader on a fascinating journey. It is a trip that not only chronicles Jussawalla’s passage from her birthplace in India to the United States, but also an excursion through the mind of a captivating individual.

HONOLULU (April 6, 2011) – Hawai‘i Governor Neil Abercrombie has appointed four new members to three-year terms on the East-West Center’s Board of Governors and re-appointed one currently serving member. The new members are: former Hawai‘i Governor George Ariyoshi, attorney Corianne Lau, attorney R. Brian Tsujimura, and attorney Richard Turbin. Abercombie also re-appointed the board’s current chairman, Puongpun Sananikone, an international business development consultant and alumnus of the East-West Center. Outgoing board members are Eddie Flores Jr., Betty Kwong, Roland Lagareta and Gene Ward. The EWC Board of Governors consists of 18 members, including five appointed by the governor of Hawai‘i, five appointed by the U.S.
