The High Voltage Laboratory at the University of Manchester is one of the few places in the world that makes lightning. The lab works to predict failures on the electrical grid and protect it from blackouts. To do so, Dr Vidyadhar Peesapati and his team test electrical equipment to its limit - sometimes striking it with up to millions of volts. WIRED went inside the lab to learn more about the team's work, and see some lab-made lightning close-up.

The two companies, Pulse Evolution and Hologram USA, have also been locked in bitter legal wrangles due to a patent dispute, despite the fact the underlying technology is based on Pepper's Ghost, a technique from the 19th century. Since 2015 the UK government has been trying to impose restrictions on access to porn. All of the legal measures needed to do so have passed and now it is only a matter of time until changes start to happen across the web. But the idea (and the execution) is fundamentally flawed. The UK's film certification board, an organisation with a limited digital background, has been put in charge of implementing the policy and one of the main age verification systems is owned by the world's largest porn company. Paola Bonfanti is a Principal Research Associate at The Francis Crick Institute, is leading research on stem cells to understand more about how they work, discover how problems with stem cells lead to disease, and find out how we can use this knowledge to repair the body. Ogilvy UK Vice Chairman Rory Sutherland co-founded a behavioural science practice within the agency, which works with a consulting practice of psychology graduates who look for ‘unseen opportunities’ in consumer behaviour. At WIRED Health, Sutherland explores the psychological reasons why people do things and how perception and placebos can be used for a positive outcome. "It doesn't really matter why people do it so as long as they do," Sutherland points out. "There's a danger in activity which goes 'it's not enough for people to go and do the thing we want them to do, they have to do it for the right reason'. Terah Lyons is the Founding Executive Director of the Partnership on AI, which was established to study and formulate best practices on AI technologies and advance the public’s understanding of AI. Prior to this, she served as Policy Advisor to the U.S. Chief Technology Officer at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) during the Obama administration. In this video, Terah shares how after the California State Senate proposed using a machine learning-based system for pre-trial detention decisions, the Partnership investigated the plan and published a report on the minimum requirements such a system would need to meet to be fit for use. The requirements held not just for the system itself, but also for the people using it: for example, judges would need to demonstrate an understanding of the algorithm’s outputs. To find out how well the latest vegan burger offering fares from a professional point of view – and if they really do give actual meat a run for its money – we asked chef Marcus Samuelsson to put his tastebuds to task: with his mix of southern American, Ethiopian and Swedish food, Samuelsson knows what makes for a delicious burger. Samuelsson provided the menu for the Obama Administration’s first State dinner, had a three-star restaurant review from The New York Times at the age of 24, and owns a number of restaurants including Red Rooster – in both Harlem, New York, and Shoreditch, London – and, most recently, Marcus in Montreal, Canada. To give each of the seven vegan burgers in our test a fair start, we dressed each pattie with a tofu-based mayonnaise, vegan cheese, a slice of tomato, lettuce and red-onion dressing before topping it off with a vegan brioche bun. The testing took place in Samuelsson's Shoreditch-based restaurant Red Rooster at The Curtain Hotel. Only burgers available to buy in UK shops were eligible (sorry, no Impossible Burger yet).
