Jacqueline M. Birch, 23, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court to one count of aiding and abetting the distribution of a controlled substance.During the plea hearing, Birch admitted she knew that another person was going to illegally distribute a drug last May, and she aided in that distribution.Evidence at a previous hearing showed that Birch drove her boyfriend, Mateusz Syryjczyk, 29, of Rockford, Ill., and another person, not identified in court documents, to a residence in Dubuque on May 27. Birch and the other person went into the residence and bought heroin from a dealer. The three drove to a hotel in Dubuque and all used the heroin. The other person began to overdose in the room, but Birch and Syryjczyk didn’t immediately call 911, according to evidence. Over many hours, Birch occasionally would perform CPR on the person to restore some breathing function, though the person never regained consciousness.Eventually, Birch and Syryjczyk decided to call 911, and Syryjczyk took the remaining drug paraphernalia from the room to prevent law enforcement from finding it, according to court documents. Birch and Syryjczyk also made false statements to police about the cause of the person’s condition.Court documents showed the overdose victim died at the scene. An autopsy later determined the cause of death was use of heroin, fentanyl and valeryl fentanyl.Syryjczyk previously pleaded to misprision of a felony and remains free on bond pending sentencing.Birch faces up to 20 years in federal prison, a $1 million fine and supervised release for life following her prison term. Sentencing will be set after a presentencing report is prepared. The case was investigated by the Dubuque Drug Task Force and is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Dan Chatham. But she can’t. Jessica, 21, works on the COVID-19 floor at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids. To protect her family and still do her job, Jessica is living full time at the hospital, which has made housing available to staff who need to isolate from their families during the pandemic. “Just based on the floor I’m on, I don’t want to put my family at risk. It’s not worth it,” she said. Her mother has an autoimmune disorder, adding another layer to Jessica’s worries. Though she does not interact with patients with the coronavirus directly, she still knows exposure is a risk. “It wasn’t too hard of a decision, but it’s hard on me sometimes,” she said. “I really miss her.” Jessica is a telemetry monitor technician. For her eight- to 12-hour shifts, her job is to watch heart monitors of patients in the hospital’s intensive care unit. If any patient starts to have cardiac distress or irregular heart rhythms, she and her fellow technicians are the first ones to notice and can notify the doctors and nurses in the main ward. “It was her choice to either work at the hospital or come home, which was really difficult for her,” April Kelley said. “She’s only 21, so I was pretty proud of her for choosing to help. I don’t think people realize the sacrifice people are making to be there, working in the hospitals right now.” Jessica is finishing her junior year as a nursing student at Mount Mercy University in Cedar Rapids. When classes moved online and the dorms closed, she had to figure out what to do. While many of her classmates moved back home with their families, doing so would have meant quitting her job. Right now, she said, that job feels more important than ever. In addition to being a full-time student, she works 32 to 36 hours a week at the hospital. She spent about a week at home with her mother and brother in Humboldt after the dorms closed, but even then, she stayed in her mother’s finished basement and didn’t interact directly with her. Her older brother, 26, is staying at home with their mom, and she misses him, too. Jessica said to stay connected, she does FaceTime with her mom, a social worker, almost every day. “She’s definitely one of my best friends, one of my biggest supporters. She is a single mom, and she’s worked two jobs for the last 12 years,” Jessica said. “She always provides for us, and she’s just wonderful in every single way. She’s very caring, she takes care of everybody, no matter where you are.” This Mother’s Day, those roles have reversed. Now, Jessica is protecting her mother instead of the other way around. “She said, ‘Mom, I just can’t come home again, I couldn’t put you in that kind of danger,’” April said. “I’m extremely proud of the young lady she is and how responsible she is, and what she is doing during this time, to make sure other people are safe.” Jessica’s interest in nursing came from her family. Her grandmother, aunt and cousin are all nurses. She also had an experience as a child that stuck with her and inspired her current career goal of becoming a pediatric intensive care nurse after graduation. In the second grade, she had encephalitis. At first, she said, doctors didn’t believe she was actually sick. Her mother had to take her to a different hospital to get help. “They said I was making it up, that my screaming and vomiting was just trying to get attention. They said I was faking it,” she said. “At one point, I really did not know who my mom was, and that’s the scariest part, to have someone tell you that’s not real. That’s just not right, and I don’t want other people, especially children to have to deal with that.” She became interested in the telemetry job after touring the hospital as a student. She said watching the monitors can be surreal, knowing each line she watches represents a patient she may never meet but whose life she is responsible for. “You see their heart, but you don’t see them,” she said. “Sometimes you watch them die, but never see them. Other times, you see someone going into a fatal rhythm, and you call the nurses ... and when they finally get that person stabilized, you know they might not have made it if we weren’t there. It’s very rewarding.” April stressed the need for people to follow public health guidelines on social distancing to stay healthy. “I know they’re starting to open back up and people are eager to get on with their lives,” she said. “But there are a lot of people putting their lives on the line right now ... and I would hate for Jessica to have to go back and self-isolate again if there was a second wave.” April’s sad she can’t spend this Mother’s Day with her daughter, but right now, that’s not what is important. “Remember, there’s going to be another Mother’s Day, she said. “We all just have to take care of our people.” Comments: (319) 398-8339; alison.gowans@thegazette.com Full Article

Todd, best known for being ABC World News Tonight Person of the Week in 2016, stood outside the Cedar Rapids house where he lives with his parents, Dale Todd, a Cedar Rapids City Council member, and Sara Todd, watching the cars drive by wishing him a happy birthday. “My son has a bigger following than I would ever hope to have,” Dale Todd said. “Everybody knows he loves a parade. He loves the trucks and cars and people that are a part of that. “There’s no better example that ‘it takes a village.’ He has had a team for 21 years.”Todd, who will be graduating from Washington High School in Cedar Rapids, has Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome, a severe form of epilepsy. The parade was arranged by his mother, Sara, who invited friends and teachers to drive by between 5 and 6 p.m. to wave, shout happy birthday, hold up a sign, sing a song or do a dance, all from a safe distance — “whatever they’re able to,” she said. Sara said Adam would have finished his last semester of education had the coronavirus not cut the school year short. “That makes it extra special,” Sara said. “He hasn’t really gotten to say goodbye to his friends and teachers.“We have appreciated his teachers so much. They have been a part of his team and really a part of our family.”Adam, a member of the Washington High School junior varsity track team, captured national attention in 2016 when, during a cross-country race at Noelridge Park, he became distracted and veered from the course. Evan Hansen, a runner from Iowa City High, loped after him and guided him back to the track.They ran the last mile together, the last two to cross the finish line. That show of compassion and sportsmanship is what led to ABC News picking both of them as Persons of the Week. In addition to Friday’s parade, Adam celebrated his birthday by taking his service dog, Turbo, on a run and trying to spot trains. He and his mom saw two. “It was a good day,” Sara said. Kim Reynolds allowing campgrounds across the state to open Friday, some people wasted little time in heading outdoors.“They’re already starting to fill up,” said Ryan Schlader of Linn County Conservation. “By about 7 this morning, we had a dozen at Squaw Creek Park. People were coming in bright and early to camp. We’re not surprised.”Schlader said Linn County Conservation tried to have the campgrounds open at the county’s Squaw Creek, Morgan Creek and Pinicon Ridge parks at 5 a.m. Friday. He expected all of them would be busy.“I think people were ready to go,” he said.Lake Macbride State Park in Johnson County didn’t see quite as much of a rush for campsites, park manager Ron Puettmann reported Friday morning, saying he’d had six walk-ins for the park’s 42 campsites.Camping this weekend will be done on a first-come, first-served basis. Sites won’t be available for reservations until next week, though online reservations can be made now, Puettmann said. “I’m quite sure people were waiting anxiously to get on,” he said.While Reynolds’ campground announcement came Wednesday, Schlader and Puettmann said they had no issues having the campgrounds ready for Friday. Schlader said county staff have been in touch with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and other county conservation boards to discuss protocols for reopening to ensure a safe experience for campers and employers.“We anticipated at some point the order would be lifted,” Schlader said. “We were anticipating maybe May 15. The campgrounds were in good shape and ready to go.” For now, camping comes with some limitations:• Campers can camp only in a self-contained unit with a functioning restroom, such as a recreational vehicle. • Shower houses with restrooms will remain closed for the time being. • Campsites are limited to six people unless they are from the same household.• No visitors are allowed at the campsites.Puettmann said staffers and a DNR officer will be on hand to make sure guidelines are followed, but he didn’t anticipate enforcement would be an issue.“For the most part, we’re going to allow people to police themselves,” he said. It’s hard to gauge demand, Schlader said. The validation process is undertaken to determine if the machines are processing tests accurately. To this point, the lab has processed the Test Iowa results using machines the State Hygienic Lab already had, officials told The Gazette.Running side-by-side testing is part of the validation process. The lab then compares whether the machines yield the same results when the sample is run, officials said Friday. The side-by-side testing means the Test Iowa samples are being run at least twice to compare results.The state does not break out how many of the 331,186 Iowans who by Friday have completed the coronavirus assessment at TestIowa.com have actually been tested. Test Iowa was initiated last month to ramp up testing of essential workers and Iowans showing COVID-19 symptoms. The state’s fourth drive-though location where people with appointments can be tested opened Thursday at the Kirkwood Continuing Education Training Center in Cedar Rapids.On Friday, Iowa posted a fourth straight day of double-digit deaths from coronavirus, with the latest 12 deaths reported by the state Department of Public Health bringing the statewide toll to 243 since COVID-19 was first confirmed March 8 in Iowa.State health officials reported another 398 Iowans tested positive for the respiratory ailment, bringing that count to 11,457 of the 70,261 residents who have been tested — a positive rate of more than 16 percent.One in 44 Iowans has been tested for COVID-19, with 58,804 posting negative results, according to state data. A total of 4,685 people have recovered from the disease.During a Thursday media briefing, Gov. Kim Reynolds told reporters a backlog of test results that occurred due to validation of Test Iowa equipment had been “caught up,” but some Iowans who participated in drive-through sites set up around the state indicated they still were awaiting results.Reynolds spokesman Pat Garrett confirmed Thursday that “a very small percentage” of coronavirus test samples collected under the Test Iowa program could not be processed because they were “potentially damaged,” resulting in incomplete results.There were 407 Iowans who were hospitalized (with 34 admitted in the past 24 hours) for coronavirus-related illnesses and symptoms with 164 being treated in intensive care units and 109 requiring ventilators to assist their breathing.Health officials said the 12 deaths reported Friday were: three in Woodbury County, two in Linn County and one each in Black Hawk, Dallas, Dubuque, Jasper, Louisa, Muscatine and Scott counties. No other information about the COVID-19 victims was available from state data.According to officials, 51 percent of the Iowans who have died from coronavirus have been male — the same percentage that tested positive.Iowans over the age of 80 represent 46 percent of the COVID-19 victims, followed by 41 percent between 61 and 80.Of those who have tested positive, state data indicates about 42 percent are age 18 to 40; 37 percent are 41 to 60; 14 percent are 61 to 80 and 5 percent are 81 or older.Counties with the highest number of positive test results are Polk (2,150), Woodbury (1,532), Black Hawk (1,463) and Linn (813).Earlier this week, state officials revamped the data available to the public at coronavirus.iowa.gov, with the new format no longer listing the age range of Iowans who died from coronavirus and providing information using a different timeline than before.The governor did not hold a daily media briefing Friday due to scheduling conflicts created by Vice President Mike Pence’s trip to Iowa. SW, the morning of April 9. Cedar Rapids police had indicated Edwards was wanted in particular for the shooting of Mark Robertson, 36.Edwards faces charges of attempted murder, intimidation with a dangerous weapon, going armed with intent and willful injury.The U.S. Marshals Service helped locate Edwards, distributing a photo of Edwards along the Gulf Coast. He was located in Mobile, Ala. when his father brought him to the Mobile police department so he could turn himself in, according to a Cedar Rapids police news release.The April 9 shooting was reported at 5:03 a.m. after two employees were shot at Associated Materials. Both suffered non-life-threatening injuries, police said.Police said at the time it appeared the shooter knew the two men.Shawn Hardy, senior vice president of integrated products for Associated Materials, confirmed Edwards worked at the Cedar Rapids business, which gave him access to the building, but said he had been employed through a temp agency. But none of those images were from this year — which now is defined by the novel coronavirus that has forced education online and put an end to large gatherings like graduation ceremonies. Appearing in front of a red ISU screen Friday, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Dean Daniel J. Robison addressed graduates like he usually would at commencement — but this time in a recorded message acknowledging the unprecedented circumstances keeping them apart.“This year, because of the COVID crisis, we are unfortunately not all together for this happy occasion,” he said, pushing forward in a motivational tone by quoting famed ISU alumnus George Washington Carver. “When you can do the common things in life in an uncommon way, you will command the attention of the world,” Robison said, citing Carver. About 12,000 graduates across Iowa’s public universities this month are doing exactly that — capping their collegiate careers with never-before-attempted online-only commencement ceremonies, with each campus and their respective colleges attempting a variety of virtual celebration methods.ISU and the University of Iowa are attempting some form of socially-distanced livestreamed convocation with countdown clocks and virtual confetti. All three campuses including the University of Northern Iowa have posted online recorded messages, videos and slides acknowledging individual graduates.Some slides include photos, thank-yous, quotes and student plans for after graduation.UNI, which didn’t try any form of a live virtual ceremony, instead created a graduation website that went live Thursday. That site hosts an array of recorded video messages — including one from UNI President Mark Nook who, standing alone behind a podium on campus clad in traditional academic regalia, recognized his campus’ 1,500-some spring graduates and their unusual challenges.“We know the loss you feel in not being able to be on campus to celebrate this time with your friends, faculty and staff,” Nook said. “To walk around campus in your robe and to take those pictures with friends and family members … The loss is felt by many of us as well.”He reminded those listening that this spring’s UNI graduates — like those at the UI and ISU — can participate in an upcoming in-person commencement ceremony.And although students were allowed to return caps and gowns they ordered for their canceled walks across the stage, some kept them as keepsakes. The campuses offered other tokens of remembrance as well, including “CYlebration” gift packages ISU sent to graduates in April stuffed with a souvenir tassel, diploma cover, and streamer tube — to make up for the confetti that won’t be falling on graduation caps from the Hilton Coliseum rafters.In addition to the recorded messages from 17 UI leaders — including President Bruce Harreld — the campus solicited parent messages, which will be included in the live virtual ceremonies. To date, about 3,100 of the more than 5,400 UI graduates have RSVP’d to participate in the ceremony, which spokeswoman Anne Bassett said is a required affirmation from the students to have their names read.“Students do not have to sign up to watch,” she said. “So there’s no way at this time to predict how many will do so.”Despite the historic nature of the first online-only commencement ceremonies — forever bonding distanced graduates through the shared experience — UI graduate Omar Khodor, 22, said it’s a club he would have liked to avoid.“I’d definitely prefer not to be part of that group,” the environmental science major said, sharing disappointment over the education, experiences and celebrations he lost to the pandemic. “A lot of students like myself, we’re upset, but we’re not really allowed to be upset given the circumstances,” Khodor said. “You have this sense that something is unfair, that something has been taken from you. But you can’t be mad about it at all.”‘Should I Dance Across the Stage?’ Life is too short to dwell on what could have been or what should have been — which sort of captures graduate Dawn Hales’ motivation to get an ISU degree.The 63-year-old Ames grandmother calls herself the “oldest BSN Iowa State grad ever.”“It’s the truth, because we’re only the second cohort to graduate,” Hales said. “I’ll probably be the oldest for a while.”ISU began offering a Bachelor of Science in nursing degree in fall 2018 for registered nurses hoping to advance their careers — like Hales, who spent years in nursing before becoming director of nursing at Accura Healthcare, a skilled nursing and rehabilitation center in Ames.In addition to wanting more education, Hales said, she felt like the “odd man out” in her red-and-gold family — with her husband, three sons and their wives all earning ISU degrees. She earned an associate degree and became a registered nurse with community college training. “I was director of nursing at different facilities, but I did not have a four-year degree,” she said. “I always wanted to get my BSN.”So in January 2019, she started full-time toward her three-semester pursuit of a BSN — even as she continued working. And her education took a relevant and important turn when COVID-19 arrived.“My capstone project was infection control,” she said, noting her focus later sharpened to “infection control and crisis management” — perfect timing to fight the coronavirus, which has hit long-term care facilities particularly hard. “We were hyper vigilant,” Hales said of her facility, which has yet to report a case of COVID-19. “I think we were probably one of the first facilities that pretty much shut down and started assessing our staff when they would come in.”Hales said she was eager to walk in her first university graduation and was planning antics for it with her 10-year-old granddaughter.“We were trying to think, should I dance across the stage?” Hales said. “Or would I grab a walker and act like an old lady going across the stage?“She was trying to teach me to do this ‘dab’ move,” Hales said. “I said, ‘Honey, I cannot figure that out.’”In the end, Hales watched the celebration online instead. She did, however, get a personalized license plate that reads, “RN2BSN.”In From Idaho To Exalt ‘In ‘Our Own Way’Coming from a family-run dairy farm in Jerome, Idaho, EllieMae Millenkamp, 22, is the first in her family to graduate college.Although music is her passion, Millenkamp long expected to study at an agriculture school — but Colorado State was her original choice. Then, while visiting family in Iowa during a cousin’s visit to ISU, she fell in love with the Ames campus and recalibrated her academic path.While at ISU, the musical Millenkamp began writing more songs and performing more online, which led to in-person shows and a local band.And then, during her junior year, a talent scout reached out to invite her to participate in an audition for NBC’s “The Voice.” That went well and Millenkamp, in the summer before her senior year, moved to Los Angeles and made it onto the show. She achieved second-round status before being bumped, but the experience offered her lifelong friendships and connections and invigorated her musical pursuits — which have been slowed by COVID-19. Shows have been canceled in now idled bars.Millenkamp went back to Idaho to be with her family, like thousands of her peers also did with their families, when the ISU campus shut down.After graduation she plans on returning and working the family farm again until her musical career has the chance to regain momentum. But she recently returned to Ames for finals. But all that got canceled — and even some requirements were waived since COVID-19 made them impossible.“There were still a lot of a lot of things to wrap up,” he said. “A lot of things I was looking forward to.”He’s ending the year with just three classes to finish and “absolutely” would have preferred to have a fuller plate. But Khodor’s academic career isn’t over. He’s planning to attend law school in the fall at the University of Pennsylvania, where he’ll pursue environmental law. But this spring has diminished his enthusiasm, with the question lingering of whether in-person courses will return to campus soon. If they don’t, he’s still leaning toward enrolling — in part — because of all the work that goes into applying and getting accepted, which he’s already done. “But online classes are definitely less fulfilling, less motivating. You feel like you learn less,” he said. “So it will kind of be a tossup. There’ll be some trade-offs involved in what I would gain versus what I would be paying for such an expensive endeavor like law school.”As for missing a traditional college commencement, Khodor said he will, even though he plans to participate in the virtual alternative.“Before it got canceled, I didn’t think that I was looking forward to it as much as I actually was,” he said. Not so much for the pomp and circumstance, but for the closure, which none of the seniors got this year. Despite the current coronavirus-related mitigation practices, the staff had created a special moment for the couple, who have been partners for 24 years. Daggett burst into tears as employees played their wedding song — Billy Joel’s “The Longest Time.”“It just touched my soul,” Daggett said.Across the state, moments like this are relegated through windows or over a phone call. As the novel coronavirus pandemic sweeps through the country, long-term care facilities have locked down in an effort to keep residents healthy, which means their families are no longer able to hug their loved ones, or sit with them in their rooms.For many families, the feelings at such times this time are conflicted. Typical Mother’s Day celebrations have been placed on hold, and recent milestones have been missed by those living in long-term care facilities. Simple visits through windows feel distant.“Those are the moments you remember and you miss,” said Daggett, recalling memories of visits to Bickford of Marion from Hoskins’s grandchildren and family gatherings during the holidays. Hoskins, who has dementia, has been a resident at Bickford since August 2019.“The pandemic has taken this away,” Daggett said.But beyond this new dynamic with which family members are left to grapple, they also have the constant worry that their loved one could fall ill.So far, Bickford of Marion has not seen any cases.“Every time you read about another outbreak — whether it’s close to home or anywhere in the country — it brings home how fortunate we are so far,” said Matt Hoskins, Liz Hoskin’s son. “I can’t imagine the anxiety the residents and staff are having once it breaks through the wall.”As of Friday, 29 long-term care facilities across the state, which includes skilled nursing facilities and senior living centers, among others — have reported outbreaks of COVID-19 among hundreds of their staff and residents.As a result, for some Iowans, that fear has become a reality.‘I have to trust’Ruth Brackett’s son Jamie Degner, a 38-year-old resident at Harmony House Health Care Center in Waterloo, tested positive for COVID-19 this past week.Degner, who has severe autism and intellectual disabilities, has been a resident there since he was 15 years old.More than 60 residents and staff have tested positive for COVID-19 at Harmony House, an intermediate care facility. It’s one of two long-term care facilities in Black Hawk County reporting an outbreak, defined as three or more positive tests among residents.Degner received his test results on Tuesday. He’s had lower-than-normal oxygen levels, but otherwise has recorded his usual vital signs and has not experienced symptoms.Brackett said it is “unbelievably difficult to not be able to go be with him through this.”As with many facilities across the state, Harmony House closed its doors to visitors in early March, when the first cases of COVID-19 began being reported across Iowa and the nation. Brackett said her son’s cognitive abilities make it impossible for him to understand that she is unable to visit because she might make him sick, so the staff instead tell Degner his mom is “at work.” While she’s optimistic he’ll improve, Brackett worries whether Degner’s virus would take a turn for the worse. “It’s tough because I have to trust” the staff, Brackett said. “There’s nothing I can do, so I can’t spend a lot of time dwelling on what I might do differently.”The families that spoke to The Gazette believe the leadership at long-term care facilities are doing what they can to keep its residents safe and healthy. At Bickford of Marion, officials have taken the unique step of promising public transparency of possible COVID-19 cases in its facility. On the website of every Bickford location is a feature recording the number of residents who have tested positive for COVID-19.“Whether it’s COVID-19 or not, we want to be transparent with families about their loved ones’ care,” Bickford of Marion Executive Director Jacobi Feckers said. “I don’t know why other nursing homes haven’t taken that step because I haven’t spoken to other facilities, but I’m thankful that’s the route we’ve taken.”It’s not just families who are placing their trust in management. Ron Moore is an independent living resident at Cottage Grove Place, one of the largest senior living centers in Cedar Rapids that has reported an outbreak of COVID-19 this past week. According to the latest data from public health officials, five residents and staff there have tested positive.The outbreak originated in the skilled nursing unit, and officials said they are working to ensure the virus doesn’t spread to the assisted-living and independent-living portions of the facility. They restricted movement between the facilities and conduct frequent temperature checks of staff.So far, the general feeling among residents at Cottage Grove Place’s independent-living housing is that management has “done a good job” of controlling exposure.“The feelings of the residents here are positive,” Moore said. “They appreciate what management has done to protect us.”‘Any opportunity to celebrate’Still, life looks much differently at Cottage Grove Place. Moore said his schedule typically is packed with weekly book clubs and coffees with friends. Before this, it had been emotionally difficult for Hausknecht not to see her mom weekly as she usually does“It sunk in that I don’t know when I’m going to see my mom again, and that felt really terrible,” Hausknecht previously told The Gazette.Hausknecht said she hopes to take this year’s Mother’s Day as an opportunity to do something special, particularly given the difficult past few weeks.“Our family isn’t super-big on these kinds of holidays but we do like to acknowledge them, and this year it feels important to take hold of any opportunity to celebrate,” she said.Other facilities, including Bickford of Marion, also have eased restrictions on sending food and gifts to residents in time for Mother’s Day. Matt Hoskins, Liz’s Hoskins’ son, said the family’s usual Mother’s Day plans are impossible this year, so they hope to send Liz’s Hoskins artwork from her grandchildren along with other gifts. Brackett, who will be apart from her son Degner this year, said she hadn’t planned anything for the holiday. She looks forward to her first in-person visit with him after the pandemic, when she will bring his favorite meal from McDonald’s and a new deck of Phase 10 cards. Despite the feelings of being separated, their wedding anniversary on May 1 likely is something Daggett will cherish, she said. With Daggett acting as Hoskins caregiver since her dementia diagnosis in 2016, their wedding anniversary has been something the couple hasn’t celebrated in a significant way in some time, she said.But that worry still creeps in the back of her mind. at Web Fonts, Dingbats, Icons, and Unicode By feedproxy.google.com Published On :: Wed, 18 Aug 2010 07:33:46 PDT Yesterday, Cameron Koczon shared a link to the dingbat font, Pictos, by the talented, Drew Wilson. Cameron predicted that dingbats will soon be everywhere. Symbol fonts, yes, I thought. Dingbats? No, thanks. Jason Santa Maria replied: @FictiveCameron I hope not, dingbat fonts sort of spit in the face of accessibility and semantics at the moment. We need better options. Jason rightly pointed out the accessibility and semantic problems with dingbats. By mapping icons to letters or numbers in the character map, they are represented on the page by that icon. That’s what Pictos does. For example, by typing an ‘a’ on your keyboard, and setting Pictos as the font-face for that letter, the Pictos anchor icon is displayed. Other folks suggested SVG and JS might be better, and other more novel workarounds to hide content from assistive technology like screen readers. All interesting, but either not workable in my view, or just a bit awkward. Ralf Herrmann has an elegant CSS example that works well in Safari. Falling down with CSS text-replacement A CSS solution in an article from Pictos creator, Drew Wilson, relies on the fact that most of his icons are mapped to a character that forms part of the common name for that symbol. The article uses the delete icon as an example which is mapped to ‘d’. Using :before and :after pseudo-elements, Drew suggests you can kind-of wrangle the markup into something sort-of semantic. However, it starts to fall down fast. For example, a check mark (tick) is mapped to ‘3’. There’s nothing semantic about that. Clever replacement techniques just hide the evidence. It’s a hack. There’s nothing wrong with a hack here and there (as box model veterans well know) but the ends have to justify the means. The end of this story is not good as a VoiceOver test by Scott at Filament Group shows. In fairness to Drew Wilson, though, he goes on to say if in doubt, do it the old way, using his font to create a background image and deploy with a negative text-indent. I agreed with Jason, and mentioned a half-formed idea: @jasonsantamaria that’s exactly what I was thinking. Proper unicode mapping if possible, perhaps? The conversation continued, and thanks to Jason, helped me refine the idea into this post. Jon Hicks flagged a common problem for some Windows users where certain Unicode characters are displayed as ‘missing character’ glyphs depending on what character it is. I think most of the problems with dingbats or missing Unicode characters can be solved with web fonts and Unicode. Rising with Unicode and web fonts I’d love to be able to use custom icons via optimised web fonts. I want to do so accessibly and semantically, and have optimised font files. This is how it could be done: Map the icons in the font to the existing Unicode code points for those symbols wherever possible. Unicode code points already exist for many common symbols. Fonts could be tiny, fast, stand-alone symbol fonts. Existing typefaces could also be extended to contain symbols that match the style of individual widths, variants, slopes, and weights. Imagine a set of Clarendon or Gotham symbols for a moment. Wouldn’t that be a joy to behold? There may be a possibility that private code points could be used if a code-point does not exist for a symbol we need. Type designers, iconographers, and foundries might agree a common set of extended symbols. Alternatively, they could be proposed for inclusion in Unicode. Include the font with font-face. This assumes ubiquitous support (as any use of dingbats does) — we’re very nearly there. WOFF is coming to Safari and with a bit more campaigning we may even see WOFF on iPad soon. In HTML, reference the Unicode code points in UTF-8 using numeric character references. Unicode characters have corresponding numerical references. Named entities may not be rendered by XML parsers. Sean Coates reminded me that in many Cocoa apps in OS X the character map is accessible via a simple CMD+ALT+t shortcut. Ralf Herrmann mentioned that unicode characters ‘…have “speaking” descriptions (like Leftwards Arrow) and fall back nicely to system fonts.’ Limitations Accessibility: Limited Unicode / entity support in assistive devices. My friend and colleague, Jon Gibbins’s old tests in JAWS 7 show some of the inconsistencies. It seems some characters are read out, some ignored completely, and some read as a question mark. Not great, but perhaps Jon will post more about this in the future. Elizabeth Pyatt at Penn State university did some dingbat tests in screen readers. For real Unicode symbols, there are pronunciation files that increase the character repertoire of screen readers, like this file for phonetic characters. Symbols would benefit from one. Web fonts: font-face not supported. If font-face is not supported on certain devices like mobile phones, falling back to system fonts is problematic. Unicode symbols may not be present in any system fonts. If they are, for many designers, they will almost certainly be stylistically suboptimal. It is possible to detect font-face using the Paul Irish technique. Perhaps there could be a way to swap Unicode for images if font-face is not present. Now, next, and a caveat I can’t recommend using dingbats like Pictos, but the icons sure are useful as images. Beautifully crafted icon sets as carefully crafted fonts could be very useful for rapidly creating image icons for different resolution devices like the iPhone 4, and iPad. Perhaps we could try and formulate a standard set of commonly used icons using the Unicode symbols range as a starting point. I’ve struggled to find a better visual list of the existing symbols than this Unicode symbol chart from Johannes Knabe. Icons in fonts as Unicode symbols needs further testing in assistive devices and using font-face. Last, but not least, I feel a bit cheeky making these suggestions. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing. Combine it with a bit of imagination, and it can be lethal. I have a limited knowledge about how fonts are created, and about Unicode. The real work would be done by others with deeper knowledge than I. I’d be fascinated to hear from Unicode, accessibility, or font experts to see if this is possible. I hope so. It feels to me like a much more elegant and sustainable solution for scalable icons than dingbat fonts. When they don’t exist we make up the narrative — we join the dots. We make cognitive leaps and fill in the bits of a story that are implied or missing. The same goes for websites. We make quick judgements based on a glimpse. Then we delve deeper. The narrative unfolds, or we create one as we browse. Mark Bernstein penned Beyond Usability and Design: The Narrative Web for A List Apart in 2001. He wrote, ‘the reader’s journey through our site is a narrative experience’. I agreed wholeheartedly: Websites are narrative spaces where stories can be enacted, or emerge. Henry Jenkins, Director of Comparative Media Studies, and Professor of Literature at MIT, wrote Game Design as Narrative Architecture. He suggested we think of game designers, ‘less as storytellers than as narrative architects’. I agree, and I think web designers are narrative architects, too. (Along with all the multitude of other roles we assume.) Much of what Henry Jenkins wrote applies to modern web design. In particular, he describes two kinds of narratives in game design that are relevant to us: Enacted narratives are those where: […] the story itself may be structured around the character’s movement through space and the features of the environment may retard or accelerate that plot trajectory. Sites like Amazon, New Adventures, or your portfolio are enacted narrative spaces: Shops or service brochures that want the audience to move through the site towards a specific set of actions like buying something or initiating contact. Emergent narratives are those where: […] spaces are designed to be rich with narrative potential, enabling the story-constructing activity of players. Sites like Flickr, Twitter, or Dribbble are emergent narrative spaces: Web applications that encourage their audience use the tools at their disposal to tell their own story. The audience defines how they want to use the narrative space, often with surprising results. We often build both kinds of narrative spaces. Right now, my friends and I at Analog are working on Mapalong, a new maps-based app that’s just launched into private beta. At its heart Mapalong is about telling our stories. It’s one big map with a set of tools to view the world, add places, share them, and see the places others share. The aim is to help people tell their stories. We want to use three ideas to help you do that: Space (recording places, and annotating them), data (importing stuff we create elsewhere), and time (plotting our journeys, and recording all the places, people, and memories along the way). We know that people will find novel uses for the tools in Mapalong. In fact, we want them to because it will help us refine and build better tools. We work in an agile way because that’s the only way to design an emerging narrative space. Without realising it we’ve become architects of a narrative space, and you probably are, too. Many projects like shops or brochure sites have fixed costs and objectives. They want to guide the audience to a specific set of actions. The site needs to be an enacted narrative space. Ideally, designers would observe behaviour and iterate. Failing that, a healthy dose of empathy can serve. Every site seeks to teach, educate, or inform. So, a bit of knowledge about people’s learning styles can be useful. I once did a course in one to one and small group training with the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development. It introduced me to Peter Honey and Alan Mumford’s model which describes four different learning styles that are useful for us to know. I paraphrase: Activists like learning as they go; getting stuck in and working it out. They enjoy the here and now, and are happy to be dominated by immediate experiences. They are open-minded, not sceptical, and this tends to make them enthusiastic about anything new. Reflectors like being guided with time to take it all in and perhaps return later. They like to stand back to ponder experiences and observe them from many different perspectives. They collect data, both first hand and from others, and prefer to think about it thoroughly before coming to a conclusion. Theorists to understand and make logical sense of things before they leap in. They think problems through in a vertical, step-by-step logical way. They assimilate disparate facts into coherent theories. Pragmatists like practical applications of ideas, experiments, and results. They like trying out ideas, theories and techniques to see if they work in practice. They positively search out new ideas and take the first opportunity to experiment with applications. Usually people share two or more of these qualities. The weight of each can vary depending on the context. So how might learning styles manifest themselves in web browsing behaviour? Activists like to explore, learn as they go, and wander the site working it out. They need good in-context navigation to keep exploring. For example, signposts to related information are optimal for activists. They can just keep going, and going, and exploring until sated. Reflectors are patient and thoughtful. They like to ponder, read, reflect, then decide. Guided tours to orientate them in emergent sites can be a great help. Saving shopping baskets for later, and remembering sessions in enacted sites can also help them. Theorists want logic. Documentation. An understanding of what the site is, and what they might get from it. Clear, detailed information helps a theorist, whatever the space they’re in. Pragmatists get stuck in like activists, but evaluate quickly, and test their assumptions. They are quick, and can be helped by uncluttered concise information, and contextual, logical tools. An understanding of interactive narrative types and a bit of knowledge about learning styles can be useful concepts for us to bear in mind. I also think they warrant inclusion as part of an articulate designer’s language of web design. If Henry Jenkins is right about games designers, I think he could also be right about web designers: we are narrative architects, designing spaces where stories are told. I’m going to say that again with emphasis: Ampersand was ace! Like the Ready Brek kid from the 80s TV ads I’m glowing with good vibes. Imagine you’d just met some of the musicians that created the soundtrack to your life. That’s pretty much how I feel. Nerves and all… Photo by Ben Mitchell. For a long, long time I’ve gazed across at the typography community with something akin to awe at the work they do. I’ve lurked quietly on the ATypI mailing list, in the Typophile forum, and behind the glass dividing my eyes from the blogs, portfolios, and galleries. I always had a sneaking suspicion the web and type design communities had much in common: Excellence born from actual client work; techniques and skills refined by practice, not in a lab or classroom; a willingness to share and disseminate, most clearly demonstrated at Typophile and through web designer’s own blogs. The people of both professions have a very diverse set of backgrounds from graphic design all the way through to engineering, to accidentally working in a print shop. We’ve been apprenticed to our work, and Ampersand was a celebration of what we’ve achieved so far and what’s yet to come. Of course, web design is a new profession. Type design has a history that spans hundreds of years. Nevertheless, both professions are self-actualising. Few courses exist of any real merit. There is no qualifications authority. The work from both arenas succeeds or fails based on whether it works or not. Ampersand was the first event of its kind. Folks from both communities came together around the mutal fascination, frustration, challenge and opportunity of web type. Like Brooklyn Beta, the audience was as fantastic as the line up. I met folks like Yves Peters of the FontFeed, Mike Duggan of Microsoft Typography, Jason Smith, Phil Garnham, Fernando Mello, and Emanuela Conidi of Fontsmith, Veronica Burian of TypeTogether, Adam Twardoch of Fontlab and MyFonts, Nick Sherman of of Webtype, Mandy Brown of A Book Apart and Typekit, and many, many others. (Sorry for stopping there, but wow, it would be a huge list.) Rich Rutter Rich Rutter opened the day on behalf of Clearleft and Fontdeck at the Brighton Dome. Rich and I had talked about a web typography conference before. He just went out and did it. Hats off to him, and people like Sophie Barrett at Clearleft who helped make the day run so smoothly. Others have written comprehensive, insightful summaries of the day and the talks. Much better than I could, sitting there on the day, rapt, taking no notes. What follows are a few snippets my memory threw out when prodded. Vincent Connare Who knew the original letterforms for Comic Sans were inspired by a copy of The Watchmen Vincent Connare had in his office? Or that Vincent, who also designed Trebuchet, considers himself an engineer rather than type designer, and is working at the moment on the Ubuntu fonts with colleagues at Dalton Maag. Jason Santa Maria declared himself a type nerd, and gave a supremely detailed talk about selecting, setting, and understanding web type. Wonderful stuff. Jason Santa Maria Jonathan Hoefler talked in rapid, articulate, and precise terms about the work behind upcoming release of pretty-much all of H&FJ’s typefaces as web fonts. (Hooray!) He clearly and wonderfully explained how they took the idea behind their typefaces, and moved them through a design process to produce a final form for a specific purpose. After staying up until 4am the night before, anxiously working on slides, I was carried along by the privilege and joy of being there, hopefully without too much mumbling or squinting with bleary eyes. After lunch, David Berlow continued the story of web fonts, taking us on a journey through his own trials and tribulations at Font Bureau when re-producing typefaces for the web crude media. His dry, droll, richly-flavoured delivery was a humorous counterpoint to some controversial asides. David Berlow Photo by Jeremy Keith. John Daggett of Mozilla, editor of the CSS3 Fonts Module, talked with great empathy for web designers about the amazing typographic advances we’re about to see in browsers. Tim Brown of Typekit followed. Tim calmly and thoroughly advocated the extension of modular scales to all aspects of a web interface, taking values from the body type and building all elements with those values as the common denominator. Finally, Mark Boulton wrapped up the day brilliantly, describing the designer’s role as the mitigator of entropy, reversing the natural trend for things to move from order to chaos, and a theme he’s exploring at the moment: designing from the content out. Mark Boulton The tone of the day was fun, thoughtful, articulate, and exacting. All the talks were a mix of anecdotal and observational humour, type nerdery, and most of all an overwhelming commitment to excellence in web typography. It was a journey in itself. Decades of experience from plate and press, screen, and web was being distilled into 45-minute presentations. I loved it. As always, one of the most enjoyable bits for me was the hallway track. I talked to heaps of people both in the pre- and after-party, and in between the talks on the day itself. I heard stories, ideas, and opinions from print designers, web designers, type designers, font developers, and writers. We talked late into the night. We talked more the next day. Now the talking has paused for a while, my thoughts are manifold. I can honestly say, I’ve never been so filled with positivity about where we are, and where we’re going. Web typography is here, it works, it’s better all the time, and one day web and type designers everywhere will wonder, perplexed, as they try to imagine what the web was like before. Here’s to another Ampersand next year! I’m now going to see if Rich needs any encouragement to do it again. I’m guessing not, but if he does, I aim to provide it, vigorously. I hope I see you there! Asymmetrical waveforms are quite natural and not necessarily a problem. They are particularly common on recordings of speech, vocals and can be caused by low-end filtering. However, they limit the amount of gain that can be safely applied without introducing distortion or clipping due to aggressive limiting. This blog post shows how one can use this feature for Dynamic Ad Insertion and discusses other Audio Manipulation Methods of the Auphonic API. API-only Feature For the general podcasting hobbyist, or even for someone producing a regular podcast, the features that are accessible via our web interface are more than sufficient. However, some of our users, like podcasting companies who integrate our services as part of their products, asked us for dynamic ad insertions. We teamed up with them to develop a way of making this work within the Auphonic API. We are pleased therefore to announce audio inserts - a new feature that has been made part of our API. This feature is not available through the web interface though, it requires the use of our API. Before we talk about audio inserts, let's talk about what you need to know about dynamic ad insertion! Dynamic Ad Insertion There are two ways of dealing with adverts within podcasts. In the first, adverts are recorded or edited into the podcast and are fixed, or baked in. The second method is to use dynamic insertion, whereby the adverts are not part of the podcast recording/file but can be inserted into the podcast afterwards, at any time. This second approach would allow you to run new ad campaigns across your entire catalog of shows. As a podcaster this allows you to potentially generate new revenue from your old content. As a hosting company, dynamic ad insertion allows you to choose up to date and relevant adverts across all the podcasts you host. You can make these adverts relevant by subject or location, for instance. Your users can define the time for the ads and their podcast episode, you are then in control of the adverts you insert. Audio Inserts in Auphonic Whichever approach to adverts you are taking, using audio inserts can help you. Audio inserts are separate audio files which will be inserted into your main single or multitrack production at your defined offset (in seconds). When a separate audio file is inserted as part of your production, it creates a gap in the podcast audio file, shifting the audio back by the length of the insert. Helpfully, chapters and other time-based information like transcriptions are also shifted back when an insert is used. The biggest advantage of this is that Auphonic will apply loudness normalization to the audio insert so, from an audio point of view, it matches the rest of the podcast. Although created with dynamic ad insertion in mind, this feature can be used for any type of audio inserts: adverts, music songs, individual parts of a recording, etc. In the case of baked-in adverts, you could upload your already processed advert audio as an insert, without having to edit it into your podcast recording using a separate audio editing application. Please note that audio inserts should already be edited and processed before using them in production. (This is usually the case with pre-recorded adverts anyway). The only algorithm that Auphonic applies to an audio insert is loudness normalization in order to match the loudness of the entire production. Auphonic does not add any other processing (i.e. no leveling, noise reduction etc). Audio Inserts Coding Example Here is a brief overview of how to use our API for audio inserts. Be warned, this section is coding heavy, so if this isn't your thing, feel free to move along to the next section! You can add audio insert files with a call to https://auphonic.com/api/production/{uuid}/multi_input_files.json, where uuid is the UUID of your production. Crucially, time-based information such as chapters etc. will be shifted accordingly. Fade In/Out time of audio files: See Docs This allows you to set the fade in/out time (in ms) at the start/end of output files. The default fade time is 100ms, but values can be set between 0ms and 5000ms. This feature is also available in our Auphonic Leveler Desktop App. Adding intro and outro: See Docs Automatically add intros and outros to your main audio input file, as it is also available in our web interface. Add multiple intros or outros: See Docs Using our API, you can also add multiple intros or outros to a production. These intros or outros are played in series. Overlapping intros/outros: See Docs This feature allows intros/outros to overlap either the main audio or the following/previous intros/outros. Conclusion If you haven't explored our API already, the new audio inserts feature allows for greater flexibility and also dynamic ad insertion. After feedback by our users and many new experiments, we are proud to release a complete rework of the Adaptive Leveler parameters: In the previous version, we based our Adaptive Leveler parameters on the Loudness Range descriptor (LRA), which is included in the EBU R128 specification. Although it worked, it turned out that it is very difficult to set a loudness range target for diverse audio content, which does include speech, background sounds, music parts, etc. The results were not predictable and it was hard to find good target values. Therefore we developed our own algorithm to measure the dynamic range of audio signals, which works similarly for speech, music and other audio content. The following advanced parameters for our Adaptive Leveler allow you to customize which parts of the audio should be leveled (foreground, all, speech, music, etc.), how much they should be leveled (dynamic range), and how much micro-dynamics compression should be applied. To try out the new algorithms, please join our private beta program and let us know your feedback! Leveler Preset The Leveler Preset defines which parts of the audio should be adjusted by our Adaptive Leveler: Default Leveler: Our classic, default leveling algorithm as demonstrated in the Leveler Audio Examples. Use it if you are unsure. Foreground Only Leveler: This preset reacts slower and levels foreground parts only. Use it if you have background speech or background music, which should not be amplified. Fast Leveler: A preset which reacts much faster. It is built for recordings with fast and extreme loudness differences, for example, to amplify very quiet questions from the audience in a lecture recording, to balance fast-changing soft and loud voices within one audio track, etc. Amplify Everything: Amplify as much as possible. Similar to the Fast Leveler, but also amplifies non-speech background sounds like noise. Leveler Dynamic Range Our default Leveler tries to normalize all speakers to a similar loudness so that a consumer in a car or subway doesn't feel the need to reach for the volume control. However, in other environments (living room, cinema, etc.) or in dynamic recordings, you might want more level differences (Dynamic Range, Loudness Range / LRA) between speakers and within music segments. The parameter Dynamic Range controls how much leveling is applied: Higher values result in more dynamic output audio files (less leveling). If you want to increase the dynamic range by 3dB (or LU), just increase the Dynamic Range parameter by 3dB. We also like to call this Loudness Comfort Zone: above a maximum and below a minimum possible level (the comfort zone), no leveling is applied. So if your input file already has a small dynamic range (is within the comfort zone), our leveler will be just bypassed. Example Use Cases: Higher dynamic range values should be used if you want to keep more loudness differences in dynamic narration or dynamic music recordings (live concert/classical). It is also possible to utilize this parameter to generate automatic mixdowns with different loudness range (LRA) values for different target environments (very compressed ones like mobile devices or Alexa, very dynamic ones like home cinema, etc.). Compressor Controls Micro-Dynamics Compression: The compressor reduces the volume of short and loud spikes like "p", "t" or laughter ( short-term dynamics) and also shapes the sound of your voice (it will sound more or less "processed"). The Leveler, on the other hand, adjusts mid-term level differences, as done by a sound engineer, using the faders of an audio mixer, so that a listener doesn't have to adjust the playback volume all the time. For more details please see Loudness Normalization and Compression of Podcasts and Speech Audio. Possible values are: Auto: The compressor setting depends on the selected Leveler Preset. Medium compression is used in Foreground Only and Default Leveler presets, Hard compression in our Fast Leveler and Amplify Everything presets. Soft: Uses less compression. Medium: Our default setting. Hard: More compression, especially tries to compress short and extreme level overshoots. Use this preset if you want your voice to sound very processed, our if you have extreme and fast-changing level differences. Off: No short-term dynamics compression is used at all, only mid-term leveling. Switch off the compressor if you just want to adjust the loudness range without any additional micro-dynamics compression. Separate Music/Speech Parameters Use the switch Separate MusicSpeech Parameters (top right), to see separate Adaptive Leveler parameters for music and speech segments, to control all leveling details separately for speech and music parts: For dialog intelligibility improvements in films and TV, it is important that the speech/dialog level and loudness range is not too soft compared to the overall programme level and loudness range. This parameter allows you to use more leveling in speech parts while keeping music and FX elements less processed. Note: Speech, music and overall loudness and loudness range of your production are also displayed in our Audio Processing Statistics! Example Use Case: Music live recordings or dynamic music mixes, where you want to amplify all speakers (speech dynamic range should be small) but keep the dynamic range within and between music segments (music dynamic range should be high). Dialog intelligibility improvements for films and TV, without effecting music and FX elements. We find when clients see us interview their users, and get real-time responses, they’re able to learn about the needs of their users in real-time and be more active participants in the process. One way we help clients feel engaged with the process during remote sessions is to establish a real-time communication backchannel that empowers clients to flag responses they’d like to dig into further and to share their ideas for follow-up questions. There are several benefits to establishing a communication backchannel for moderated sessions:Everyone on the team, including both internal and client team members, can be actively involved throughout the data collection process rather than waiting to passively consume findings.Team members can identify follow-up questions in real-time which allows the moderator to incorporate those questions during the current session, rather than just considering them for future sessions.Subject matter experts can identify more detailed and specific follow-up questions that the moderator may not think to ask.Even though the whole team is engaged, a single moderator still maintains control over the conversation which creates a consistent experience for the participant.If you’re interested in creating your own backchannel, here are some tips to make the process work smoothly:Use the chat tool that is already being used on the project. While getting muddy might rekindle fond childhood memories for some, exposing your gear to the elements isn’t great – it’s bad for your equipment and can cause long-term, and potentially expensive, damage to the trail. There are some trail apps out there but we wanted one that would focus on current conditions. Currently, our favorites trail apps, like mtbproject.com, trailrunproject.com, and hikingproject.com -- all owned by REI, rely on user-reported conditions. While this can be effective, the reports are frequently unreliable, as condition reports can become outdated in just a few days. Our goal was to solve this problem by building an app that brought together location, soil type, and weather history data to create on-demand condition predictions for any trail in the US. We built an initial version of TrailBuddy by tapping into several readily-available APIs, then running the combined data through a machine learning algorithm. (Oh, and also by bringing together a bunch of smart and motivated people and combining them with pizza and some of the magic that is our Pointless Weekends. Learn more and introduce yourself. The quest for data. We knew from the start this app would require data from a number of sources. As previously mentioned, we used REI’s APIs (i.e. https://www.hikingproject.com/data) as the source for basic trail information. We used the trails’ latitude and longitude coordinates as well as its elevation to query weather and soil type. We also found data points such as a trail’s total distance to be relevant to our app users and decided to include that on the front-end, too. Since we wanted to go beyond relying solely on user-reported metrics, which is how REI’s current MTB project works, we came up with a list of factors that could affect the trail for that day. First on that list was weather. We not only considered the impacts of the current forecast, but we also looked at the previous day’s forecast. For example, it’s safe to assume that if it’s currently raining or had been raining over the last several days, it would likely lead to muddy and unfavorable conditions for that trail. We utilized the DarkSky API (https://darksky.net/dev) to get the weather forecasts for that day, as well as the records for previous days. This included expected information, like temperature and precipitation chance. It also included some interesting data points that we realized may be factors, like precipitation intensity, cloud cover, and UV index. But weather alone can’t predict how muddy or dry a trail will be. To determine that for sure, we also wanted to use soil data to help predict how well a trail’s unique soil composition recovers after precipitation. Similar amounts of rain on trails of very different soil types could lead to vastly different trail conditions. A more clay-based soil would hold water much longer, and therefore be much more unfavorable, than loamy soil. Finding a reliable source for soil type and soil drainage proved incredibly difficult. After many hours, we finally found a source through the USDA that we could use. As a side note—the USDA keeps track of lots of data points on soil information that’s actually pretty interesting! We can’t say we’re soil experts but, we felt like we got pretty close. We used Whimsical to build our initial wireframes. Putting our design hats on. From the very first pitch for this app, TrailBuddy’s main differentiator to peer trail resources is its ability to surface real-time information, reliably, and simply. For as complicated as the technology needed to collect and interpret information, the front-end app design needed to be clean and unencumbered. We thought about how users would naturally look for information when setting out to find a trail and what factors they’d think about when doing so. We posed questions like: How easy or difficult of a trail are they looking for?How long is this trail?What does the trail look like?How far away is the trail in relation to my location?For what activity am I needing a trail for? Is this a trail I’d want to come back to in the future? By putting ourselves in our users’ shoes we quickly identified key features TrailBuddy needed to have to be relevant and useful. First, we needed filtering, so users could filter between difficulty and distance to narrow down their results to fit the activity level. Next, we needed a way to look up trails by activity type—mountain biking, hiking, and running are all types of activities REI’s MTB API tracks already so those made sense as a starting point. And lastly, we needed a way for the app to find trails based on your location; or at the very least the ability to find a trail within a certain distance of your current location. We used Figma to design, prototype, and gather feedback on TrailBuddy. Using machine learning to predict trail conditions. As stated earlier, none of us are actual soil or data scientists. So, in order to achieve the real-time conditions reporting TrailBuddy promised, we’d decided to leverage machine learning to make predictions for us. Digging into the utility of machine learning was a first for all of us on this team. Luckily, there was an excellent tutorial that laid out the basics of building an ML model in Python. Provided a CSV file with inputs in the left columns, and the desired output on the right, the script we generated was able to test out multiple different model strategies, and output the effectiveness of each in predicting results, shown below. We assembled all of the historical weather and soil data we could find for a given latitude/longitude coordinate, compiled a 1000 * 100 sized CSV, ran it through the Python evaluator, and found that the CART and SVM models consistently outranked the others in terms of predicting trail status. In other words, we found a working model for which to run our data through and get (hopefully) reliable predictions from. The next step was to figure out which data fields were actually critical in predicting the trail status. The more we could refine our data set, the faster and smarter our predictive model could become. We pulled in some Ruby code to take the original (and quite massive) CSV, and output smaller versions to test with. Now again, we’re no data scientists here but, we were able to cull out a good majority of the data and still get a model that performed at 95% accuracy. With our trained model in hand, we could serialize that to into a model.pkl file (pkl stands for “pickle”, as in we’ve “pickled” the model), move that file into our Rails app along with it a python script to deserialize it, pass in a dynamic set of data, and generate real-time predictions. At the end of the day, our model has a propensity to predict fantastic trail conditions (about 99% of the time in fact…). Just one of those optimistic machine learning models we guess. Where we go from here. It was clear that after two days, our team still wanted to do more. As a first refinement, we’d love to work more with our data set and ML model. Something that was quite surprising during the weekend was that we found we could remove all but two days worth of weather data, and all of the soil data we worked so hard to dig up, and still hit 95% accuracy. Which … doesn’t make a ton of sense. Perhaps the data we chose to predict trail conditions just isn’t a great empirical predictor of trail status. While these are questions too big to solve in just a single weekend, we'd love to spend more time digging into this in a future iteration. Full Article News & Culture

In that time, we’ve been lucky to create long-term relationships with clients like Puma, the World Wildlife Fund, and Privia Health, and, throughout our time working together, we’ve come to understand each others’ unique terminology. But that isn’t always the case when we begin work with new clients, and in a constantly-evolving industry, we know that new terminology appears almost daily and organizations have unique definitions for deliverables and processes. Kicking off a project always initiates a flurry of activity. There are contracts to sign, team members to introduce, and new platforms to learn. It’s an exciting time, and we know clients are anxious to get underway. Amidst all the activity, though, there is a need to define and create a shared lexicon to ensure both teams understand the project deliverables and process that will take us from kickoff to launch. Below, we’ve rounded up a few terms for each of our disciplines that often require additional explanation. Note: our definitions of these terms may differ slightly from the industry standard, but highlight our interpretation and use of them on a daily basis. User ExperienceResearchIn UX, there is a proliferation of terms that are often used interchangeably and mean almost-but-subtly-not the same thing. Viget uses the term research to specifically mean user research — learning more about the users of our products, particularly how they think and behave — in order to make stronger recommendations and better designs. This can be accomplished through different methodologies, depending on the needs of the project, and can include moderated usability testing, stakeholder interviews, audience research, surveys, and more. Learn more about the subtleties of UX research vocabulary in our post on “Speaking the Same Language About Research”.WireframesWe use wireframes to show the priority and organization of content on the screen, to give a sense of what elements will get a stronger visual treatment, and to detail how users will get to other parts of the site. Wireframes are a key component of website design — think of them as the skeleton or blueprint of a page — but we know that clients often feel uninspired after reviewing pages built with gray boxes. In fact, we’ve even written about how to improve wireframe presentations. We remind clients that visual designers will step in later to add polish through color, graphics, and typography, but agreeing on the foundation of the page is an important and necessary first step. PrototypesDuring the design process, it’s helpful for us to show clients how certain pieces of functionality or animations will work once the site is developed. We can mimic interactivity or test a technical proof of concept by using a clickable prototype, relying on tools like Figma, Invision, or Principle. Our prototypes can be used to illustrate a concept to internal stakeholders, but shouldn’t be seen as a final approach. Often, these concepts will require additional work to prepare them for developer handoff, which means that prototypes quickly become outdated. Read more about how and when we use prototypes. Navigation Testing (Treejack Testing)Following an information architecture presentation, we will sometimes recommend that clients conduct navigation testing. When testing, we present a participant with the proposed navigation and ask them to perform specific tasks in order to see if they will be able to locate the information specified within the site’s new organization. These tests generally focus on two aspects of the navigation: the structure of the navigation system itself, and the language used within the system. A certification can be a useful way to advance your skill set quickly or make your resume stand out, which can be especially important for those trying to break into a new industry or attract business while self-employed. Whatever your reason may be for pursuing a professional certificate, there is one question only you can answer for yourself: is it worth it? Finding first-hand experiences from professionals with similar career goals and passions was the most helpful research I used to answer that question for myself. So, here’s mine; why I decided to get Scrum certified, how I evaluated my options, and if it was really worth it. A shift in mindset My background originates in brand strategy where it’s typical for work to follow a predictable order, each step informing the next. This made linear techniques like water-fall timelines, completing one phase of work in its entirety before moving onto the next, and documenting granular tasks weeks in advance helpful and easy to implement. When I made the move to more digitally focused work, tasks followed a much looser set of ‘typical’ milestones. While the general outline remained the same (strategy, design, development, launch) there was a lot more overlap with how tasks informed each other, and would keep informing and re-informing as an iterative workflow would encourage. Trying to fit a very fluid process into my very stiff linear approach to project planning didn’t work so well. I didn’t have the right strategies to manage risks in a productive way without feeling like the whole project was off track; with the habit of account for granular details all the time, I struggled to lean on others to help define what we should work on and when, and being okay if that changed once, or twice, or three times. Everything I learned about the process of product development came from learning on the job and making a ton of mistakes—and I knew I wanted to get better. Being ‘agile’-enthusiasts, this group of developers were desperately looking for ways to infuse our approach to product work with agile-minded principles (the broad definition of ‘agile’ comes from ‘The Agile Manifesto’, which has influenced frameworks for organizing people and information, often applied in product development). This not only applied to how I worked with them, but how they worked with each other, and the way we all onboarded clients to these new expectations. This was a huge eye opener to me. Soon enough, I started applying these agile strategies to my day-to-day— running stand-ups, setting up backlogs, and reorganizing the way I thought about work output. It’s from this experience that I decided it may be worth learning these principles more formally. The choice to get certified There is a lot of literature out there about agile methodologies and a lot to be learned from casual research. This benefitted me for a while until I started to work on more complicated projects, or projects with more ambitious feature requests. My decision to ultimately pursue a formal agile certification really came down to three things: An increased use of agile methods across my team. Within my day-to-day I would encounter more team members who were familiar with these tactics and wanted to use them to structure the projects they worked on.The need for a clear definition of what processes to follow. I needed to grasp a real understanding of how to implement agile processes and stay consistent with using them to be an effective champion of these principles.Being able to diversify my experience. Finding ways to differentiate my resume from others with similar experience would be an added benefit to getting a certification. If nothing else, it would demonstrate that I’m curious-minded and proactive about my career. To achieve these things, I gravitated towards a more foundational education in a specific agile-methodology. This made Scrum the most logical choice given it’s the basis for many of the agile strategies out there and its dominance in the field. Evaluating all the options For Scrum education and certification, there are really two major players to consider. Scrum Alliance - Probably the most well known Scrum organization is Scrum Alliance. They are a highly recognizable organization that does a lot to further the broader understanding of Scrum as a practice.Scrum.org - Led by the original co-founder of Scrum, Ken Schwaber, Scrum.org is well-respected and touted for its authority in the industry. Each has their own approach to teaching and awarding certifications as well as differences in price point and course style that are important to be aware of. SCRUM ALLIANCE Pros Strong name recognition and leaders in the Scrum fieldOffers both in-person and online coursesHosts in-person events, webinars, and global conferencesProvides robust amounts of educational resources for its membersHas specialization tracks for folks looking to apply Scrum to their specific disciplineMembers are required to keep their skills up to date by earning educational credits throughout the year to retain their certificationConsistent information across all course administrators ensuring you'll be set up to succeed when taking your certification test. Ultimately, I decided upon a Professional Scrum Master certification from Scrum.org! The price and flexibility of learning course content were most important to me. I found a ton of free materials on Scrum.org that I could study myself and their practice tests gave me a good idea of how well I was progressing before I committed to the cost of actually taking the test. And, the pedigree of certification felt comparable to that of Scrum Alliance, especially considering that the founder of Scrum himself ran the organization. Putting a certificate to good use I don’t work in a formal Agile company, and not everyone I work with knows the ins and outs of Scrum. I didn’t use my certification to leverage a career change or new job title. So after all that time, money, and energy, was it worth it?I think so. I feel like I use my certification every day and employ many of the principles of Scrum in my day-to-day management of projects and people. Self-organizing teams is really important when fostering trust and collaboration among project members. This means leaning on each other’s past experiences and lessons learned to inform our own approach to work. It also means taking a step back as a project manager to recognize the strengths on your team and trust their lead.Approaching things in bite size pieces is also a best practice I use every day. Even when there isn't a mandated sprint rhythm, breaking things down into effort level, goals, and requirements is an excellent way to approach work confidently and avoid getting too overwhelmed.Retrospectives and stand ups are also absolute musts for Scrum practices, and these can be modified to work for companies and project teams of all shapes and sizes. Keeping a practice of collective communication and reflection will keep a team humming and provides a safe space to vent and improve. Today, I’ll share our definitions for processes and deliverables used by our design and strategy teams. Creative Brand Strategy In our experience, we’ve found that the term brand strategy is used to cover a myriad of processes, documents, and deliverables. To us, a brand strategy defines how an organization communicates who they are, what they do and why in a clear and compelling way. Over the years, we’ve developed an approach to brand strategy work that emphasizes rigorous research, hands-on collaboration, and the definition of problems and goals. We work with clients to align on a brand strategy concept and, depending on the client and their goals, our final deliverables can range to include strategy definition, audience-specific messaging, identity details, brand elements, applications, and more. Take a look at the brand strategy work we’ve done for Fiscalnote, Swiftdine, and Armstrong Tire. Content Strategy A content strategy goes far beyond the words on a website or in an app. A strong content strategy dictates the substance, structure, and governance of the information an organization uses to communicate to its audience. It guides creating, organizing, and maintaining content so that companies can communicate who they are, what they do, and why efficiently and effectively. We’ve worked with organizations like the Washington Speakers Bureau, The Nature Conservancy, the NFL Players Association, and the Wildlife Conservation Society to refine and enhance their content strategies. Still confused about the difference between brand and content strategy? Check out our flowchart. Style Guide vs. Brand Guidelines We often find the depth or fidelity of brand guidelines and style guides can vary greatly, and the terms can often be confused. When we create brand guidelines, they tend to be large documents that include in-depth recommendations about how a company should communicate their brand. Sections like “promise”, “vision”, “mission”, “values”, “tone”, etc. accompany details about how the brand’s logo, colors and fonts should be used in a variety of scenarios. Style guides, on the other hand, are typically pared down documents that contain specific guidance for organizations’ logos, colors and fonts, and don’t always include usage examples. Design System One question we get from clients often during a redesign or rebrand is, “How can I make sure people across my organization are adhering to our new designs?” This is where a design system comes into play. Design systems can range from the basic — e.g., a systematic approach to creating shared components for a single website — all the way to the complex —e.g., architecting a cross-product design system that can scale to accommodate hundreds of different products within a company. By assembling elements like color, typography, imagery, messaging, voice and tone, and interaction patterns in a central repository, organizations are able to scale products and marketing confidently and efficiently. When a design system is translated into code, we refer to that as a parts kit, which helps enforce consistency and improve workflow. Comps or Mocks When reviewing RFPs or going through the nitty-gritty of contracts with clients, we often see the terms mocks or comps used interchangeably to refer to the static design of pages or screens. Internally, we think of a mock-up as a static image file that illustrates proof-of-concept, just a step beyond a wireframe. A comp represents a design that is “high fidelity” and closer to what the final website will look like, though importantly, is not an exact replica. This is likely what clients will share with internal stakeholders to get approval on the website direction and what our front-end developers will use to begin building-out the site (in other words, converting the static design files into dynamic HTML, CSS, and JavaScript code). at Should you use Userbase for your next static site? By feedproxy.google.com Published On :: Wed, 06 May 2020 08:00:00 -0400 During the winter 2020 Pointless Weekend, we built TrailBuddy (working app coming soon). Our team consisted of four developers, two project managers, two front-end developers, a digital-analyst, a UXer, and a designer. In about 48 hours, we took an idea from Jeremy Field’s head to a (mostly) working app. We broke up the project in two parts:. First, a back-end that crunches trail, weather, and soil data. That data is exposed via a GraphQL API for a web app to consume. While developers built the API, I built a static front end using Next.js. Famously, static front-ends don’t have a database, or a concept of “users.” A bit of functionality I wanted to add was saving favorite trails. I didn’t want to be hacky about it, I needed some way to add users and a database. I knew it’d be hard for the developers to set this up as part of the API, they had their hands full with all the #soil-soil-soil-soil-soil (a slack channel dedicated solely to figuring out our soil data problem—those were plentiful.) I had been looking for an excuse to use Userbase, and this seemed like as good a time as any. A textbook Userbase use case “When would I use it?” The Usebase site lists these reasons: If you want to build a web app without writing any backend code. If you never want to see your users' data. If you're tired of dealing with databases. If you want to radically simplify your GDPR compliance. And if you want to keep things really simple. This was a perfect fit for my problem. I didn’t want to write any more backend code for this. I didn’t want to see our user’s data, I don’t care to know anyone’s favorite trails.* A nice bonus to not having users in our backend was not having to worry about keeping their data safe. We don’t have their data at all, it’s end-to-end encrypted by Userbase. We can offer a reasonable amount of privacy for free (well for the price of using Userbase: $49 a year.) I am not tired of dealing with databases, but I’d rather not. I don’t think anyone doesn’t want to simplify their GDPR compliance. Finally, given our tight timeline I wanted nothing more than to keep things really simple. A sign up form that I didn't have to write a back-end for Using Userbase Userbase can be tried for free, so I set aside thirty minutes or so to do a quick proof of concept to make sure this would work out for us. I made an account and followed their Quickstart. Userbase is a fundamentally easy tool to use, but their quickstart is everything I’d want out of a quickstart: Written in the most vanilla way possible (just HTML and vanilla JS). This means I can adapt it to my needs, in this case React using Next.js Easy to follow, it does the most barebones tour of the functionality you can expect to get out of the SDK (software development kit.) In other words it is quick and it is a start It has a live demo and code samples you can download and run yourself It didn’t take long after that to integrate Userbase into our app with more help from their great docs. I debated whether to add code samples of what we did here, and I didn’t because any reader would be better off using the great quickstart and docs Userbase provides—they are that clear, and that good. Depending on your use case you’ll need to adapt the examples to your needs, for us the trickiest things were creating a top level authentication context to manage users in the app, and a custom hook to encapsulate all the logic for setting, updating, and deleting favourite trails in the app. Userbase’s SDK worked seamlessly for us. A log in form that I didn't have to write a back-end for Is Userbase for you? Maybe. I am definitely a fan, so much so that this blog post probably reads like an advert. Userbase saved me a ton of time in this project. It reminded me of “The All Powerful Front End Developer” talk by Chris Coyer. I don’t fully subscribe to all the ideas in that talk, but it is nice to have “serverless” tools like Userbase, and all the new JAMstacky things. There are limits to the Userbase serverless experience in terms of scale, and control. Obviously relying on a third party for something always carries some (probably small) risk—it’s worth noting Usebase includes a note on their pricing page that says “You can host it yourself always under your control, or we can run it for you for a full serverless experience”—Still, I wouldn’t hesitate this to use in future projects. One of the great things about Viget and Pointless Weekend is the opportunity to try new things. For me that was Next.js and Userbase for Trailbuddy. It doesn’t always work out (in fact this is my first pointless weekend where a risk hasn’t blown up in my face) but it is always fun. Getting to try out Userbase and beginning to think about how we may use it in the future made the weekend worthwhile for me, and it made my job on this project much more enjoyable. *I will write a future post about privacy conscious analytics in TrailBuddy when I’ve figured that out. We find when clients see us interview their users, and get real-time responses, they’re able to learn about the needs of their users in real-time and be more active participants in the process. One way we help clients feel engaged with the process during remote sessions is to establish a real-time communication backchannel that empowers clients to flag responses they’d like to dig into further and to share their ideas for follow-up questions. There are several benefits to establishing a communication backchannel for moderated sessions:Everyone on the team, including both internal and client team members, can be actively involved throughout the data collection process rather than waiting to passively consume findings.Team members can identify follow-up questions in real-time which allows the moderator to incorporate those questions during the current session, rather than just considering them for future sessions.Subject matter experts can identify more detailed and specific follow-up questions that the moderator may not think to ask.Even though the whole team is engaged, a single moderator still maintains control over the conversation which creates a consistent experience for the participant.If you’re interested in creating your own backchannel, here are some tips to make the process work smoothly:Use the chat tool that is already being used on the project. In most cases, we use a joint Slack workspace for the session backchannel but we’ve also used Microsoft Teams.Create a dedicated channel like #moderated-sessions. Conversation in this channel should be limited to backchannel discussions during sessions. This keeps the communication consolidated and makes it easier for the moderator to stay focused during the session.Keep communication limited. Channel participants should ask basic questions that are easy to consume quickly. Supplemental commentary and analysis should not take place in the dedicated channel.Use emoji responses. For this year's Pointless Weekend, we brought these passions together to build TrailBuddy. This app aims to solve that eternal question: Is my favorite trail dry so I can go hike/run/ride? While getting muddy might rekindle fond childhood memories for some, exposing your gear to the elements isn’t great – it’s bad for your equipment and can cause long-term, and potentially expensive, damage to the trail. There are some trail apps out there but we wanted one that would focus on current conditions. Currently, our favorites trail apps, like mtbproject.com, trailrunproject.com, and hikingproject.com -- all owned by REI, rely on user-reported conditions. While this can be effective, the reports are frequently unreliable, as condition reports can become outdated in just a few days. Our goal was to solve this problem by building an app that brought together location, soil type, and weather history data to create on-demand condition predictions for any trail in the US. We built an initial version of TrailBuddy by tapping into several readily-available APIs, then running the combined data through a machine learning algorithm. (Oh, and also by bringing together a bunch of smart and motivated people and combining them with pizza and some of the magic that is our Pointless Weekends. Learn more and introduce yourself. The quest for data. We knew from the start this app would require data from a number of sources. As previously mentioned, we used REI’s APIs (i.e. https://www.hikingproject.com/data) as the source for basic trail information. We used the trails’ latitude and longitude coordinates as well as its elevation to query weather and soil type. We also found data points such as a trail’s total distance to be relevant to our app users and decided to include that on the front-end, too. Since we wanted to go beyond relying solely on user-reported metrics, which is how REI’s current MTB project works, we came up with a list of factors that could affect the trail for that day. First on that list was weather. We not only considered the impacts of the current forecast, but we also looked at the previous day’s forecast. For example, it’s safe to assume that if it’s currently raining or had been raining over the last several days, it would likely lead to muddy and unfavorable conditions for that trail. We utilized the DarkSky API (https://darksky.net/dev) to get the weather forecasts for that day, as well as the records for previous days. This included expected information, like temperature and precipitation chance. It also included some interesting data points that we realized may be factors, like precipitation intensity, cloud cover, and UV index. But weather alone can’t predict how muddy or dry a trail will be. To determine that for sure, we also wanted to use soil data to help predict how well a trail’s unique soil composition recovers after precipitation. Similar amounts of rain on trails of very different soil types could lead to vastly different trail conditions. A more clay-based soil would hold water much longer, and therefore be much more unfavorable, than loamy soil. Finding a reliable source for soil type and soil drainage proved incredibly difficult. After many hours, we finally found a source through the USDA that we could use. As a side note—the USDA keeps track of lots of data points on soil information that’s actually pretty interesting! We can’t say we’re soil experts but, we felt like we got pretty close. We used Whimsical to build our initial wireframes. Putting our design hats on. From the very first pitch for this app, TrailBuddy’s main differentiator to peer trail resources is its ability to surface real-time information, reliably, and simply. For as complicated as the technology needed to collect and interpret information, the front-end app design needed to be clean and unencumbered. We thought about how users would naturally look for information when setting out to find a trail and what factors they’d think about when doing so. We posed questions like: How easy or difficult of a trail are they looking for?How long is this trail?What does the trail look like?How far away is the trail in relation to my location?For what activity am I needing a trail for? Is this a trail I’d want to come back to in the future? By putting ourselves in our users’ shoes we quickly identified key features TrailBuddy needed to have to be relevant and useful. First, we needed filtering, so users could filter between difficulty and distance to narrow down their results to fit the activity level. Next, we needed a way to look up trails by activity type—mountain biking, hiking, and running are all types of activities REI’s MTB API tracks already so those made sense as a starting point. And lastly, we needed a way for the app to find trails based on your location; or at the very least the ability to find a trail within a certain distance of your current location. We used Figma to design, prototype, and gather feedback on TrailBuddy. Using machine learning to predict trail conditions. As stated earlier, none of us are actual soil or data scientists. So, in order to achieve the real-time conditions reporting TrailBuddy promised, we’d decided to leverage machine learning to make predictions for us. Digging into the utility of machine learning was a first for all of us on this team. Luckily, there was an excellent tutorial that laid out the basics of building an ML model in Python. Provided a CSV file with inputs in the left columns, and the desired output on the right, the script we generated was able to test out multiple different model strategies, and output the effectiveness of each in predicting results, shown below. We assembled all of the historical weather and soil data we could find for a given latitude/longitude coordinate, compiled a 1000 * 100 sized CSV, ran it through the Python evaluator, and found that the CART and SVM models consistently outranked the others in terms of predicting trail status. In other words, we found a working model for which to run our data through and get (hopefully) reliable predictions from. The next step was to figure out which data fields were actually critical in predicting the trail status. The more we could refine our data set, the faster and smarter our predictive model could become. We pulled in some Ruby code to take the original (and quite massive) CSV, and output smaller versions to test with. Now again, we’re no data scientists here but, we were able to cull out a good majority of the data and still get a model that performed at 95% accuracy. With our trained model in hand, we could serialize that to into a model.pkl file (pkl stands for “pickle”, as in we’ve “pickled” the model), move that file into our Rails app along with it a python script to deserialize it, pass in a dynamic set of data, and generate real-time predictions. At the end of the day, our model has a propensity to predict fantastic trail conditions (about 99% of the time in fact…). Just one of those optimistic machine learning models we guess. Where we go from here. It was clear that after two days, our team still wanted to do more. As a first refinement, we’d love to work more with our data set and ML model. Something that was quite surprising during the weekend was that we found we could remove all but two days worth of weather data, and all of the soil data we worked so hard to dig up, and still hit 95% accuracy. Which … doesn’t make a ton of sense. Perhaps the data we chose to predict trail conditions just isn’t a great empirical predictor of trail status. While these are questions too big to solve in just a single weekend, we'd love to spend more time digging into this in a future iteration. Full Article News & Culture
