The East-West Center’s first China-United States Journalists Exchange focused on China’s more assertive role in regional issues and its increasing economic might.

Different ‘voices’ and multiple perspectives shed new light on the impact World War II had on the Pacific, when 75 college professors from nine nations participated in workshops as part of the East-West Center’s Asian Studies Development Program (ASDP).

HONOLULU (May 3) - The East-West Center expresses its deep sympathy to the family of Dr. Hadi Soesastro as we mourn his passing. Dr. Hadi served as a member of the Center’s International Advisory Board and has participated in several EWC activities over the years.  He also served as the executive director of the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Jakarta, Indonesia. As one of the most prominent and respected Southeast Asian intellectuals promoting regional economic cooperation and freer trade, he was a mentor and adviser to many younger Southeast Asian scholars and government officials.   

In honor of the East-West Center’s 50th anniversary, the commemorative video, “A Priceless Legacy,” was featured at the recent dinner launching the year’s celebrations.  In the video, the Center’s history unfolds through a series of interviews with key leaders and current East-West Center participants who share their reflections.  

A strong growth area at the East-West Center in recent years has been the Center’s journalism fellowships and exchanges. Since 2005, the range of EWC programs for journalists has doubled, to 10 programs serving about 100 participants per year, with many more attending the biennial international media conferences.

Between raising funds for victims of the 2004 Asian tsunami, helping support educational programs for street children, and forging a sister-chapter relationship with alumni in Australia, the EWCA Nepal Alumni Chapter in Kathmandu has been busy carrying out the Center’s mission in South Asia.

Two of the most prominent and important works in the East-West Center’s permanent art collection – the large murals in the stairways of Jefferson Hall by the internationally renowned artists Jean Charlot and Affandi – received an expert sprucing up this month, thanks to a visiting team from the Winterthur Museum/University of Delaware graduate program in art conservation.

On Sept. 5, four eminent Beijing-based journalists participating in the EWC’s Northeast Asia Journalists Dialogue presented a lively discussion panel at the Center on “Post-Olympics China.”

As gas prices soar in the U.S., concerns about energy security take center stage in the international dialogue on economic development. Editors of “ Asia’s Energy Future: Regional Dynamics and Global Implications ,” EWC Senior Fellows Fereidun Fesharaki and Kang Wu, examined this issue in light of Asia’s sharply increasing energy demands, during an EWC briefing in late April on Capitol Hill.

Earlier this year, Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of Thailand visited Hawaii to take part in several special East-West Center events, including a dedication ceremony for the Center’s recently reconstructed Royal Sala Thai, or Thai pavilion.
